RotoGo writes "A new survey done by GamerMetrics shows that 38% of gamers prefer the Playstation 3, making it the most anticipated system. The Wii only got 22% of the audience as their number one choice. Perhaps more interesting are the 'lifestyle' choices reported by the survey. Nirvana was cited as the favorite band for those loyal to the Xbox brand and Eminem was the top pick for the Playstation brand. The Nintendo camp prefers Gorillaz and Smallville for entertainment. The study also discovered that people that like the Xbox brand are the most likely to own an iPod and a TiVo while it is the Playstation gamers who are most likely to go outside to see a movie."

    They have forgotten to ask the one question that is surely uppermost in the minds of Slashdot readers; namely, what brand of console does one buy to maximize his chances of getting laid?

    Other findings about this particular subset of perhaps atypical, but nonetheless important customers include the facts that 70% own a handheld gaming device (their preferred handheld being the PSP)

    So even though the results of the survey predict a 70% market share for the PSP, in reality the DS is dominating the market. Obviously, the survey has too narrow of a sample (subset of a population) to be worth anything.

    • That's not what that sentence means. It means that of that subset, 70% own *some* handheld. Of those that do own a handheld, PSP is preferred - which could mean anywhere from 51% to 100%. (Or less, if there's more than two choices.) And the DS is not really "dominating" the U.S. market. Handheld hardware sales are usually 40-50% GBA, 20-25% DS and 25-30% PSP in the U.S., which game sales more biased towards the PSP. Only in Japan is the DS dominating.

        Is that units or dollars? Remember that one can buy two DS systems or a DS and a portable DVD player for the price of a PSP, and DS games also tend to run $10 cheaper than PSP games.

    Assuming this "study" has anykind of seriousness, this is bad news for sony because they're trying to build the ultimate living room entertainment system (Blue-ray, cell cpu, big hd, wireless...etc) but if the sony fan base doesn't care so much about what they offer, not a ton of people will be ready to buy the console just because they're longtime sony buyers.

    I've been a sony fan for quite some time and I am beginning to wonder where exactly is sony going with its PS3.

      • I'm in the same boat. I love Playstation, hate Xbox (mostly because I love Playstation), and recently gave away my GameCube because I just don't want more than one console in my living room.

        I don't care about the rootkits, because I don't buy music, I download it, so no worries there. Besides, most music that has come out lately sucks anyways.

        This survey sucks too, because I love Nirvana, hate Eminem, but apparently I bought the wrong console. :)

        • What does hating the XBox have to do with loving the PlayStation? Last go around I had an XBox and a GameCube (loyalty to Zelda there), and realized too late that the GC seemed to be much more for the kids.

          This time I have a 360 (my old XBox broke), and I'm planning on a PS3. I don't see a need to limit myself just because of who or what it is. I want something to have for relaxing with. The same way I don't rant against PCs just because I have a console.
          • I'm with you... I've got a PS2, GC, Xbox 1 and now an Xbox 360 sitting in my AV rack along with lots of other classic consoles. For me the consoles don't matter one iota, it's about the games you can play on them. I wouldn't have bought the 360 if it didn't have games I wanted to play, and I wont by the Wii or the PS3 until they show me some games that pique my interest.         • I feel the same way, except I've come to hate certain things about the Sony products. In particular Sony doesn't seem to be able to make a durable laser unit under any circumstances. I've never hung onto a PS2 long enough to have it fail but I had two PSX (original, not the DVR) units stop reading CDs, and my PSOne only works while inverted. Granted, the DVD-ROM in my Xbox is going out, but it's going out gradually, it didn't just suddenly crap itself and it's been limping along for over a year since it st

          Right, and thats why the PS3 is going to ship with a potentially budget-busting/fan-alienating $1100 Blu-Ray player (stand-alone price minimum) built in so that Sony can attempt to take the HD-Video market share and defeat HDDVD.

          • The departments had no influence over each other. Sony Corporate decided this was the game plan, the Home Theater division didn't force the Blu-Ray, and the pictures/music didn't force the DRM.

            Corporate decided that they were going to use the PS3 to gain control of the next wave of HD medium delivery vehicles, the PS2 did it with DVD, so they're going to do it again.

            So my point still stands. Sony Music has no say over what SCEA does. The rootkit, while evil, was not used in SCEA products - so the comparison

        • Yeah, actually, I've been thinking about getting one lately. I've got the snes emulators on the xbox, but its just not quite the same :)

          Of course, I'm not sure how pleased about my collection the lady is going to be after we get married in a few months. I'd better get my own "game room" :)

        Had a GameGear too but I sold it a while back. Nice system but chewed through batteries way too quick.

        And for the irony, the Xbox was free (won it as a door prize at a Microsoft campus event when they were showing a new version of Visual Studio), and is fully modded. I had a D-Link DSM-320 for my living room media player but Xbox with XBMC blows the D-Link away :D.

    • Brand Loyalty, if you move the letters around and change a few and remove the space and uncapitalize one, is a secret code for Idiocy. There's nothing wrong with prefering PS2 over Xbox, or Xbox over Gamecube. Maybe a system just doesn't have enough of the games you like to play. Maybe you bought three and they all died from bad drives and you don't want to buy any more from that company.     Original Xbox owner's favorite next-gen console is the 360?! PS2 owner's favorite next-gen console is the PS3 and they love the PSP?! Gamecube owners *need* the WII and watch preteen television!? What are the chances! Just kidding about the Smallville thing, but I think it would be pretty obvious that people who own the current generation of any of the above console iterations would be revenously expecting it's next-gen counterpart.

    Don't get me wrong, but how is that supposedly connected? I own a few Nintendo pieces. Do I have to listen to Gorillaz now? And since I can't have TiVo and go to the movies (obviously, or I'd have to embrace the PS3 and the X360), do I have to download my movies?

    Think of the statistics surrounding the future distribution of the console market what you want. It might even hold about at that area. But hanging the lifestyle of a person onto his choice of consoles is a bit silly. What does a console tell about a person? That he plays games. Ok. That's something EVERY console tells about him.

    It might hold some water when you hang it onto the price tags of the consoles, with XBox usually being the most expensive, PS behind and Nintendo coming in cheap. You might put demographics down based on that, i.e. that XBox players can and do spend more money on entertainment, and that they might be more likely to spend "more easily", be it that they have more money to spend or that they are more willing to shell it out for entertainment, with Nintendo players going for the budget line, out of necessity or because they're not willing to spend as much money on entertainment.

    So maybe it's true, a Nintendo player probably downloads his movies...

    • Jesus man, they were testing the theory of relativity for flaws, they just asked a buncha people some questions and these were the results.

      I myself buy Nintendo consoles first, have owned at least one of each Gameboy iteration, and even have a couple T's in my closet that have the classic Nintendo logo on them. I don't like Smallville and only moderately enjoy the quirkiness in Gorillaz tunes.

      Err, this is a marketing-based study. It doesn't say that if you watch the XBox that you listen to Eminem. The idea is to get an idea of where and how to spend marketing dollar
    • As a cheapass gamer [cheapassgamer.com], I wouldn't say that Nintendo systems are cheap at all. Sure, the hardware is less expensive, but most of the best titles take forever (or longer) to hit the bargain bins. If you own more than five games, the Nintendo probably cost you more.

        Some people, it is rumoured, thought watching Friends and discussing it at work the next day constituted a life. Small wonder they were so disappointed to see it finally end. They doubtlessly thanked their lucky stars for Suvivor, Lost, etc. Though I don't think any of these people actually play video games.

    While I can see that it is likely that one would have to venture outside for a brief period of time in order to get to the large dark cavern in which movies are shown, in my mind, going to see a movie =/= going outside. It could just be me.
  • How about those that have no desire for a console (*GASP*) We had a PS2... we were so busy with other things, we sold it. New console comes out.. meh.. so what. I've got every day things to keep me busy - wife n kids. And I don't think we'll be buying them a console anytime soon. Why would I want to have my kids spend their lives in front of a blinking box? There's a whole interactive world I'd rather have them in, and I feel they're better for it!
    • Ah, I see the problem. You needed to run the video out from your PS2 to the TV. Otherwise, yes, you'd probably just see a blinking box. But more seriously lots of people (that I know at least) find time to spend quality time with their kids and still have hobbies.
      • We've got lots of hobbies, just none that involve a console or PC. We have two dogs, which require care and attention. We have a garden we plant every year, and the kids love it. We go exploring, we go *out* which is the key. I used to game quite a bit and still play one now and then, but when given a choice, the front door wins every time.
    • Don't feel the need to click on every story, and explain in great detail why that story has nothing to do with you. It gets a bit old, realy quick. Just skip the story - a whole new magical world arises, one where you wont feel the need to post irrelevant crap like you just have, and maybe, just maybe, begin contributing something useful.

    This generation of consoles is the first where I actually haven't bought one (or all) of the consoles. The only reason I ever choose one over the other is software available. I could care less which company has their name on a console, I only care about what games it plays. Am I in the minority?

    what about PC gamers? I mean there are still a few of us who understand first-person shooters are best played on the PC with keyboard and mouse and some crossover games are just too clunky to play without the array of extra buttons and familiar controls. I know a few people who enjoyed KotoR and Morrowind more on the PC then on the X-Box. I do not know if any of my friends even bothered to try Oblivion outside of the PC world. I do own a PS/2, but my next console is probably a Wii (dear god why) unless the PS3 comes out low enough to make it tempting just for the Blu-Ray player.

    Given that the poll shows only an 8% difference between the Xbox360 and the PS3, those 14% of gamers could very easily tilt the most-popular-console-o-meter in either direction. Of course, I'm holding out for the PS3 since I'm one of those 36%. I'm also not even a serious gamer. For me, it's a cheap Blu-ray player and with confirmed rumors [1up.com] of a FFVII remake I'm pretty much sold.   • I find the results of this survey suspect. The audience is obviously self-selected of people who prefer to read mindless garbage and post on fanboy-war forums. They probably like self-inflicted pain, too.

    Current console? GameCube. (Wii)
    Current handheld? DS (Wii)
    Band? Nirvana (X360)
    Favorite TV show? Lost (X360)
    Tivo? Yes (X360)
    Movies in past 30? Yes (PS3)
    iPod? Yes (X360)

    So, will I buy a Wii, X360 or PS3? Per the survey, they believe that I will buy the X360, but I am going to buy the Wii. Why? Because I am buying it for my kids.
