First the "Wii" and now the "WOOO?" What the hell is going on over there? Is there some sort of embargo on Japanese phonems these days? Like they ran out of all the other constantants and have to use up their surplus of "W" sounds before they can order more. Did they fire off all the marketing weasels and hire an offshore preschool class as replacements? I don't get it. (shakes head in disbelief)

Braking system? I... I... I just want a flying car. They said I could have a flying car. Where's my flying car? That sinking prototype on Ebay wasn't even "sky-legal."

I wanna flying car! Sniffle. :(

Are you trying to register WeeWee?

    • How about iWii or uWii? There are other alternatives, but I think that have already been taken ;)
      • For just pennies on the dollar, you too can own the uWii Bowl. Perfect for storing popcorn for those late night terrible films!

I did know about time zones, but a whole year? That's amazing.

  • I actually saw an earlier model to the Sony UX90P the last time I was at a Fry's. So those are clearly not new.

And the eyeglass-TVs have been around for probably at least a decade.
  • Its called an itheater

Perhaps it should have read "A Fortune magazine editor traveled to Japan on a company junket had a bunch of fun and then realized he needed to deliver a trip report to his superiors. The 'gadgets from the future' report was quickly developed on the flight home from the Sky Mall catalog and includes this years technologies of an ultra-portable Sony VAIO UX90P, ZPN/Kenwood MIURO iPod dock, Mikimoto Beans iTheatre personal iPod theater, Sharp Vodafone 905SH mobile phone with 2.6" screen for watching videos, Nintendo Wii controller, Hitachi WOOO Blu-ray digital camcorder and a new range of motivational posters. Luckily, his bosses had been too busy playing golf on the company dollar to notice that everything had already been announced or realized, they also found the motivational posters very enlightening and bought several for their employees breakrooms."
      • America won't have the tech that's current in Japan for a year or more, so in a sense he is reporting on the future.

Crap and here I thought I could buy a Wii in a couple weeks!
          • "Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's President, revealed a prototype of the system's game controller at the 2005 Tokyo Game Show during his keynote speech in September 2005. ... Wii is set to be released on November 19, 2006 in North America" - Wikipedia
        • I see more cool/nifty/innovative CE gadgets coming from S.Korea these days than Japan.
      • Except that the V905SH has NOT been released here in the US, and it can't be imported because it's hardcoded to work only on Softbank's network (they totally removed the "network select" function). Well, it can be imported (I think that it only has a 100V adapter, but close enough for America), but then you just have a large PMP/camera/TV/radio.

Must be geared towards HD Nature (Boy) videos.
  • ... is the Blu-Ray camcorder production has halted until they find that secret stash of blue diodes... Should resume sometime in the next 2-5 years.
  • Will the ZPN/Kenwood MIURO work with Zune?
    • well, you can set it up near you zune, and then play stuff on it wirelessly. But you can only play each song 3 times...
    • For a moment there, I thought you were asking if the zune was powered by a ZPM. If that was true, that would be the only reason I would buy one! ;-)
  • 1. Order 20 Vaio UX280Ps from Compusa.com http://tinyurl.com/ylkn5a [tinyurl.com]

    2. Mark them up and sell them at twice the price as VAIO UX90Ps

    3. ???

    4. Profit!

    I was just feeling silly...

  • On the trip, his guide was Hiro Nakamura, who kept muttering something about cheerleaders....
  • Mikimoto Beans iTheatre

Attach a video iPod, game device, or multimedia cellphone, and two two-inch LCD displays embedded in these geeky but stylish goggles create the effect of a 50-inch TV hovering before your eyes

these things have been around for quite some time and they always parade them around in next-gen magazines, but they never seem to catch on.

seems like a lot of "flying car syndrome" to me

It's good that it is like that. When iTheater arrives we will have not only generation of deaf teenagers but also a generation of blind ones.

  • ...none of the devices can send video to any of the other devices thanks to DRM.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy the MIB again.
  • Panasonic Giant-eyed Android Girlfriend. With attachments. Special bukkake tolerance and tentacle action upgrades extra.

Nintendo Real-Live Novelty Puppies that look like latest faddish breed that expire and turn into harmless powder when kids lose interest.

  • He doesn't even know how to spell wiimote. It's pretty obvious.
  • You know, an appliance specifically designed for accessing and playing YouTube movies. Well, where is it? Does it exist?
    • They could call it the YouTard.

Wirelessly download your favorite clips of teenage morons talking/mugging into their webcam about their incredibly uninteresting lives! All for only $12.95/month! Includes 300 free copies of Kevin Federline's latest hit CD, "Playing With Fire"!
  • I'm afraid the iPod Theater will make me look like I'm on my way to the Star Trek Convention, good thing I won't be buying one any time soon. Usually those kinds of things are disorienting (especially during action movies!), and those that I've tried don't even work very well. I say, put your money into buying a real 50"screen rather than a simulation.
  • I can understand some of the other projects, but the Wiimote? It's not available in Japan, either. Moreover, the Wii launches in the US (Nov 19th) before it launches in Japan (Dec 2nd).

Apparently, the future is now just 14 days away!
  • They're just tired retreads of existing products. Future should mean completely original and innovative. This is just future as next Sunday AD.
  • I predict the next year's hot gadgets will be a fax-enabled rice cooker closely followed by a rice cooking fax machine.
  • If you ask me, the real story is here [cnn.com]. Right next to the aforementioned article.

    Scariest tech of 2006
Horrible Halloween picks for the ghastliest gizmos, scariest software and most terrifying technologies of the year.

The "Wii" [cnn.com] gets a second mention in this article, for the name alone.

    Also in the lineup; Sony's Li-Ion IED's [cnn.com], X-Men III Video Game [cnn.com], Paperless Voting Systems [cnn.com], and last--but certainly not least--Windows Vista [cnn.com].

My personal favorite is the bit about Ultra-mobile PC's [cnn.com].

    • yeah, also a non-story, but at least a bit better than the one linked to here. You forgot that they mentioned "Unbox", about which an older story is given as well [cnn.com].

And I was also wondering about these Ultra-mobile PCs. After the end of MS's promotional campaign, any mentioning about it seems to have stopped. What happened? Are they not built yet? Is there anyone here who bought one? Is there anyone here who knows someone who bought one? Is anyone ever going to think about buying one?

  • The iPod theater headset has been around for over a decade now, this one is just a retool of the "virtual TV" sold during the 90s. I can't believe they're calling this new.

Took me half a second to find a varient being sold online:
    http://www.audio-outfitters.com/ezVision.html [audio-outfitters.com]
  • more phones, video players and ipod accessories. All slight improvments on an existing theme, nothing innovative.
    Ho hum.
Where's my robotic manservant or flying car?
  • Those have been around forever since around 2000 - 2001, and they keep reappearing as the next thing to be "the new gadget" but seems never to do. Maybe ipod v5 will make them sort of relevant. But I doubt it. People don't want to be caught with nerd helments like that. I don't know if I want one, since the rez on them is so low.
if they'd get a bit higher resolution it would be alirght.

These ones alot cooler, look like you are from spliter cell, sort of:
