Pirates of the Burning Sea Patch a Step in the Right Direction? 41

The director of development for the disappointing "Pirates of the Burning Sea" recently sat down to share a few of the tidbits in the upcoming patch that is promising a host of improvements. "There were a number of changes in 1.4, but the buccaneer was definitely the big one, because with a new class you have to do new missions, career appearance items, and that sort of thing. That's all taken a lot of effort from a lot of the team. In addition to that, we have set up a lot of trial account restrictions so we can better control the abuse of trial and buddy accounts by gold spammers. We have implemented a number of things, on the back end, to help with customer support. That's an ongoing theme, because as we see more support requests, we provide more tools to make the GMs lives easier."

MMO releases patch that adds some features. In other news, things still fall downwards.

If a game issues an update, but no one installs it does it still make a sound?

      • Even their own forums are full of posts like "save POTBS!" and "slow-death of the burning sea" and so on.

I should know, I was a primary founder of the largest alliance on any of their servers. Almost everyone has left, or is currently leaving this game.

The developers are good at doing patches and such, and generally are the least corrupt and unfair GMs I've ever seen, so I find it unlikely that they paid for this slashvertisement.
  • If Slashdot were a POTBS fansite. Wake me up when subscription rates toilet and they sell out to SOE, who puts the game on life support. I mean, Christ. City of Heroes/Villains is adding two new branching classes, a huge number of new combinations for existing class types, and adding anti-spam functions, but where's its top-billed thread?

No. The only way that POTBS is newsworthy, is if they got off their asses and added ninjas and robots to the mix.

  • . . . but did anyone not know this game was gonna suck?
It all makes me think of the lead-up to the "Coupon: The Movie" skit on Mr. Show. [unoriginal.com] (Scroll down to the "Greenlight Gang" section). I can totally see that exact same meeting happening in some Sony conference room.
    • Sony did not produce POTBS. It was produced independently from Flying Lab Software who then approached Sony for help with the platform.
      • Ahh, I see. I spotted that "station.sony.com" at the end of one of the websites and immediately thought to myself, "well, there's the problem."

Am I the only one who was super-excited upon seeing a screenshot or video of this game, only to be crushed moments later by the discovery that it was another damned MMO?

Sid Meier's Pirates! was cool, but the single-player pirate experience could be done much better. Stupid MMO, getting my hopes up for all of 5 seconds.

I was interested in seeing this game as well. In fact, so much I purchased it and played it...for about 2 months.

Same MMO crap as before. Quest, grind, kill stuff...Ship to ship combat was kinda fun. The only people I saw online were the gold spammers.....

Oh, cruel fate, why do you mock me? You tempt me with screenshot gems, then flog me with the scourge of human interaction! Oh woe is me!

  • Sorry, I initially read this as a patch to "Step in the Right Direction" by the "Pirates of the Burning Sea." As in, Pirates changed the Right Direction.

Then I realized I was wrong and read further to see what it was all about.

Then I read some comments and decided I was closer the first time.
  • What trial accounts? The only trial I ever found was on the Australian servers only. I'm shopping for a new MMO and am installing all the trials I can find.

Does anyone know what they're talking about? Because, I wouldn't mind giving this one a few hours...
  • "Pirates of the Burning Sea Patch?" What is a "sea patch," why is it burning, and how do pirates fit into this?

Considering the target audience, I'll assume this has something to do with an MMO expansion, probably WoW. But neither the title nor the article summary mentions that. What if I just started talking about the latest "Wings of the Goddess patch?" What, never heard of WotG?

Pirates of the Burning Sea reminds me a lot of Eve. It has a massive amount of potential. You can almost see how awesome the game could have been. You can almost grasp the edges of an interesting economy and combat system. You can almost see wide spread coordination and politics... but in the end, the honest truth is that the economy is crap, the combat tedious, and the politics barren. It has a great deal of potential, but it doesn't live up to any of it.

It seems that this patch add the missing substance that it lacks.
  • ...sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads, attacking pirates' boats.
It could really enhance this game, isn't it ?
