Cyberconnect2's Matsuyama on Naruto Plans

ScuttleMonkey posted more than 6 years ago | from the making-things-pretty dept.

Gamasutra is running an interview with Cyberconnect2's Matsuyama on the studio's plans for their Naruto franchise. "over the last few years it has also been the prolific developer of the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, a PlayStation-exclusive line of games now spanning as many as seven entries. Currently, CyberConnect2 is working on Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, the series' first entry on PlayStation 3. It makes a significant graphical leap beyond its predecessors, focusing on perfecting the cel-shading techniques that imitate hand-drawn animation."

Making Use of the Console's Power (1)

Inquisitor911 (935895) | more than 6 years ago | (#23655153)

Please tell me the games for the PS3 will actually utilize it's power. I would like to see a Naruto game take full advantage of it's console's capabilities for once.

What makes you so sure they aren't? Most of the added power over the previous generation is eaten up just by rendering in HD anyway.

I completly agree. And as someone else had previously pointed out, it all comes from scuttlemonkey.

I'm going to spend more time on the firehose so I can mod down those kind of "stories"

Apparently you've been missing the Diggification of /. Rampant slashvertisements, blog rolls, and even shit from the Idle section has been showing up on the front page.

Call me an apologist if you want, but Naruto really is pretty decent, at least once you filter out stupid stuff like that and bloody awful filler episodes. By this I mean, when in doubt about a series, read the manga. You'll thank yourself.

Re:What the heck (1)

Goobergunch (876745) | more than 6 years ago | (#23657479)

Especially when there are filler episodes for no apparent reason. I mean, the current filler is occurring when the anime story is nearly a hundred chapters behind the manga. It's rather frustrating - I want my Hidan and Kakuzu already.

No it's not!

Because this is news for nerds and and STUFF THAT MATTERS! And dude, nothing matters more than NINJAS! These guys are cool; and by cool, I mean totally sweet! This site is awesome!

Ninjas can kill anyone they want! Ninjas cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. These guys are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. I heard that there was this ninja who was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon the ninja killed the whole town. My friend Mark said that he saw a ninja totally uppercut some kid just because the kid opened a window.

And that's what I call REAL Ultimate Power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the Ninja's defense, the kid was playing "pirate".

I am at a loss for words. Blatant slashvertisement.

It's an interview. With a game manufacturer. On how they're going to make the games and what engines they're going to use.

How is this a blatant Slashvertisement? And how is it unrelated to the games section on Slashdot?

I mean, if people didn't post stories, nobody would be able to bitch about them. But, there is more content in that article than many others I see posted here.

Cheers

Wow, I'm surprised he found a tattoo artist who would do it. Many of them won't even go near the face or hands unless you're already pretty heavily tattooed. (Well, some of the old skool guys will do anything you ask, and the consequences are your own damned problem.)

A tattoo on your face is a pretty bold statement, and not one even most people with tattoos would consider.

Definitely takes fanboi to a whole new level.

Cheers

Danny Rathjens (8471) | more than 6 years ago | (#23657419)

That's interesting. I thought the whole point of a tattoo was to draw attention. I never understood the whole concept of getting the tattoos places where they can be hidden. I guess this harks back to days when having a tattoo only meant you were a criminal or a sailor?

As for the Naruto games, are they actually any good or just made to bilk the fans of money like most game versions of tv/movies?

Re:News for... (2, Interesting)

xenocide2 (231786) | more than 6 years ago | (#23657563)

Believe it or not people worry about whether they'll be employable with tatoos.

People get tattoos for all sorts of reasons. To some people, they have more personal meaning than anything you'd want to be permanently visible -- generally, most people get ones they can cover up if they need to. To some people, it's all about others seeing it -- depends entirely on the person and why they get tattooed in the first place.

Too many hassles if they're too, er, in your face. As I said, many tattoo artists will turn you away from getting one on your hands, face, or neck -- it's sort of a fairly permanent decision and you will be judged for it on a daily basis. The reason most artists won't do it is because a) it's not something to decide lightly, and b) it tends to play into stereotypes, and c) it reflects badly on them with the old stereo type of artists who would let you do any stupid thing you wanted to do -- unless you're already pretty hard-core tattooed, you might not be have thought it through enough.

I can hide all of mine with work clothes, if I'm in shorts and a sleeveless shirt, you can only see about half of them. The rest aren't really ever on display. I know more people whose tattoos are primarily hidden when they're in "normal" society than those whose ink is always on display. (Young girls with the obligatory tattoo in the small of their back, notwithstanding -- they just get them because everyone else has them. ;-)

As for the Naruto games, are they actually any good or just made to bilk the fans of money like most game versions of tv/movies?

Can't speak to these games, since I'm generally not a gamer. But, let's face it, video game tie-ins are almost always made to separate the fans from their money.

Cheers

And even more people whining about stories they disagree with. If you don't like an article about Naruto games, don't read the article and then bitch about it.

Next time a story comes along about WoW, or Halo, or whatever the fuck Ubuntu has titled their newest release, maybe the rest of us will try to fill those articles up whining about how it's a worthless story.

Get over your bad self, nobody else cares. Some people around here might actually care about it, show some courtesy and keep your comments which are worthless to the thread to yourself.

Aha! So the reason we have so many dupes are because the editors are practicing kage bunshin no jutsu, which makes crappy clones of the original stories!

It makes so much sense now!

But the subtitled version of Slashdot is STILL better. You losers should quit reading this dub by the robotic overlord and head over to the real action on http://www.slashdot.jp/ [slashdot.jp]

Interesting to see Matsuyama on Slashdot (1)

Kuukai (865890) | more than 6 years ago | (#23664339)

Weird slashvertising aside, Hiroshi Matsuyama is actually a really awesome independent game developer. He refuses to sell out and move his company from Fukuoka in southern Japan to development hotspots like Kyoto or Tokyo, and he's been pretty active organizing conferences for smaller development companies. He also keeps his company pretty open to fans. For example, he just directed a movie based on the .hack//G.U. games, and his site is publishing a documentary [cc2.co.jp] about the process. They've been doing stuff like that since long before the whole "corporate blog" craze. He's pretty involved at all levels of his company, he's even sung in a soundtrack. He's also vocally against shortcuts like motion capture, I'm surprised that didn't come up in this interview.

Anyway, it's interesting to see him getting bigger. I actually met him in 2004, when some friends and I dropped by his office to try to get some business cards as souvenirs. Turns out he doesn't believe in those either, but he did invite us in for coffee and gave us free t-shirts.
