NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "The Last H.O.P.E. ('Hackers on Planet Earth') Conference is set for July 18-20, 2008, at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. The organizers have announced their supplemental speaker list, adding on to the initial list. Topics will include 'Crafting a Security-Enhanced Wikipedia,' 'VoIP (in)security: Italians Do It Better,' 'AntiSocial Networking: Vulnerabilities in Social Nets,' 'SWF and the Malware Tragedy,' 'Simulating the Universe on Supercomputers,' and my personal favorite, 'RIAA Litigations: How the Tech Community Can Help.'"

New York. Across the street from MSG. Also known as Hotel BedBug for their recent outbreak of bedbugs. Quite possibly the WORST hotel in midtown. Sure the lobby looks nice, but the rooms are hell. That POS should be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up.

just cause something is illegal doesn't mean it's wrong
That is perfectly true, but just because you want something to be legal doesn't make it right. Do you think that authors shouldn't be able to try to enforce the copyright on their books, or artists shouldn't be able to enforce copyright on their digital photos? Suddenly just because you can copy something with trivial effort, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Don't get me wrong, I've done it too, but if I like a band then I will buy their album because they deserve recognition and support. All too many tight arse bastards would just copy their music and leave it at that.

Re:This one's obvious (1)

kaizokuace (1082079) | more than 6 years ago | (#23721535)

the problem isn't authors being able to enforce copyright. It's them being able to enforce it for essentially forever and even in the grave!

Re:This one's obvious (1)

conan1989 (1142827) | more than 6 years ago | (#23721655)

i agree, if you like something... give the popper respects. for example, i heard about this DJ called "nick skitz" so i downloaded his stuff, LOVED it then went out and bought all his CDs (~30.) but then that brigs us to the the HUGE percentage that the labels get.

but it's when copy right is abused to hinder development (patents) or used for censorship (church of scientology) that i (and others) say "fuck this, lets do what needs to be done"

Re:This one's obvious (1)

somersault (912633) | more than 6 years ago | (#23721861)

When it comes to that, sure. It still doesn't get away from the fact that copying music when the copyright belongs to someone else is unethical.. thought the fact that the labels screw the artists over is also unethical, it's a dilemma. Personally I would prefer if all artists pulled a Radiohead and put their stuff up online or setup their own label, then you know that most of the money is going to the artist (and the rest pays the hosting bills/CD pressing). For lesser known/funded bands that kind of involvement could be impractical so they could start out somewhere like iTunes.

Re:On the Speakers list..THE DOCTOR RULES! apk (0, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#23719201)

The DOCTOR, rules!

Loved this show since I was a boy in the 1970's (John Pertwee, & Tom Baker era here)... & rediscovered it when Christopher Eccleston took over in 2005! He was great, but, the "new Doctor", David Tennant IS THE ULTIMATE imo, to date (longest running sci-fi ("the literature of change") seties there is since 1962 in fact!)

In honor of this series, I did a screensaver (of fairly "advanced design" (for a screensaver that is)) of this series' "introduction sequence" (where the tardis is vectoring thru time etc. et al) PLUS, other tardis in flight clips too!

APK Dr. Who Screensaver 2008++ self-extracting WinRar (protected vs. virus infection) installer D/L link:

http://www.drwhodaily.com/community/index.php?showtopic=386&st=0 [drwhodaily.com]

(Direct Download URL Link is below, above is the introductory description of it for other Dr. Who fans like myself (& obviously, yourself too))

http://www.filefactory.com/file/91ff9e/APKDoctorWhoScreenSaver2008.exe [filefactory.com]

(1 click EASY to install via a WinRar self-extracting installation system that is protected vs. tampering via Rar locking & 5% recovery record built in, to install this single file multithreaded screensaver that internally contains the intro. of this fine sci-fi series & plays it back from RAM, not disk, for greater speed & efficiency + the screensaver actually CHECKS ITSELF, vs. virus infestion (more below on that note (via CRC-32 & FileSize checks)))

(File Download Size = 3.3mb/3287kb)

Max memory occupancy = 18mb
AVG. - MAX CPU Usage = 14%-21%
Max ThreadCount = 2-6 (depending on stage of operations it is in)
Max hWnd Count = 149

* For support questions, email me here -> apk4776239@hotmail.com

(Above all else, enjoy!)

APK

P.S.=> Multithreaded, multitasking, & LOW CPU USAGE (for a screensaver that is) that is only "1 moving part" efficiency that internally stores its .avi it animates within itself, & PLAYS IT FROM RAM, not disk, for the utmost in speed + efficiency! apk

Re:On the Speakers list..THE DOCTOR RULES! apk (0)

It's a free screensaver that plays back the introduction sequence that every Doctor Who episode 2005 through present has which shows Dr. Who's tardis time travelling ship in flight through various scenes from the show. It is done very well after having tried it myself, after having read its review by Dr. Who forums members. The poster whom the author of the post about Dr. Who was replying to somebody who mentioned Dr. Who and apparently he posted that screensaver in reply to he is what. Reading is fundamental, try it sometime. I am glad I did, because I like Dr. Who and that is a good screensaver.

Aside from the radio station, there will be other projects, such as the NOC NOC (none of our concern network operations center, a coat check for servers), and the Attendee Metadata project, which seeks to use 2.4GHz OpenBeacon tags to track all the attendees. http://www.thelasthope.org/projects.php#rfid [thelasthope.org] They need some volunteers for this project, actually, so if you have some microcontroller skills, drop them a line at projects at hope.net

This looks like it will be a great conference, I'm looking forward to attending.

RIAA Litigations: How the Tech Community Can Help (5, Insightful)

John Hasler (414242) | more than 6 years ago | (#23717849)

Set up honeypots to entrap the RIAA into sending bogus notices. Thoroughly document this and make the results available to those defending themselves against RIAA suits (and to those pursuing class action suits against the RIAA).

Also try to trick them into breaking into and/or DOSing bittorent trackers (preferably ones not being used to infringe any RIAA copyrights).

Nah, get the trackers to help... (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#23718135)

The trackers just need to start giving them some fake peers. Maybe give them ONLY fake peers if they're the one guy who has 800 torrents, but which isn't sharing...

Right before The Last HOPE was announced, Vornado Realty Trust announced that they were tearing down the Hotel Pennsylvania before 2010 (when the next HOPE presumably would be). Wow, nice that you've turned a .edu host into a blood-curdling rightwing propaganda lair. I love how the Arab "savages" don't measure up in nobility to the state that was founded on SOLELY racial grounds, and has been accused of more human rights crimes (like pioneering torture methods) than anyone else in recent history. Particularly touching are those comics (fitting name, too) of the brave soldier guarding the baby, just like the brave soldiers with sniper rifles that killed children in the arms of their parents (recorded on French TV couple of years back) and the brave soldiers whose abuses of innocent civilians occupy so much of the press daily, that they have become redundant. You give bias a new meaning, you disgusting piece of shit. At least the arab gunmen own up to their "savagery". You cowards prefer the guise of business suits. I hope you suffer more than the people whose suffering you advocate.

Where will the next one be ? (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#23718913)

And what will it be called ? "The Future Hope" ? "The Next Hope" ? "The Hope Strikes Back" ? "The Once and Future Hope" ? "Infinite Hope" ?

But seriously, now that Hotel Pennsylvannia will be turned into millionaire's housing, maybe this thing can be moved to a cheaper and more accessible part of the country. Especially in light of the economy, we should focus on a place that is central and is a big Greyhound hub. Maybe a place where there are a lot of urban ruins, and it would be really cheap to rent some sort of big bare building like a parking garage. Having everyone all camp out might be a bit of a stretch, I don't know if the hacker crowd is ready to woodstock it yet, but if there were a Motel 6 or Days Inn within walking distance for the weak that might suffice.

The list of talks and speakers looks really good, even better than last year, when I really regretted not attending after talking to some people who did. I wish I were going, but even re-examining my money and schedule, it looks like I won't be.

Perhaps some people could get together to organize a complementary conference, to be held in January (cheaper travel and most time separation from the real Hope). I suggest we put it in some place like Albequerque or Los Cruces, which might be bearable at that time of year, and is generally cheap.

So it's not cheap, but more accessible and more of a Greyhound hub than NYC? Does such a place actually exist? NY has 3+ airports, good connections by bus and train and is central for the East Coast (which has half of the US population). Even the center of US population is right around the Mississippi.

There are alot of hacker conferences in the US other than Defcon (Las Vegas) and HOPE (although those are the two biggest). Off the top of my head there is also Summercon (Atlanta), Notacon (Cleveland), Schmoocon (DC), Carolinacon (NC), and ToorCon (San Diego). Further abroad there is the Chaos Computer Camp in Germany. Obviously you can go off and start your own, but I'd take a careful look around first.

"The Last H.O.P.E. ('Hackers on Planet Earth') Conference is set for July 18-20, 2007, at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City.
Attendance by TARDIS only?

Well, there are portable time travel devices... but the landings are pretty rough.

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#23719469)

The only reason this is "The Last HOPE" is because the NYC crew (including one Eric Corley), don't want to take the minimal trouble to move it to another hotel.

Not because the con doesn't draw. It does. Pretty much every hacker or wannabe hacker who can get there does.

Not because they don't make money. They do.

Oh well. At least after this year, we won't have to worry about Emmanuel plying underage hacker wannabes with booze and trying to get them in his room alone and playing "Catholic Priest and Altar Boy".

WHOOPS! Did I mention the great big *Dark Secret* aloud? SORRY! I'M SORRY! I keep having core dumps of my internal monologue daemon.

HOPE vs DEFCON (1)

cexshun (770970) | more than 6 years ago | (#23724045)

If my company is making me choose 1 conference, should I choose HOPE or DEFCON? HOPE seems less expensive and has more "mainstream" keynote speakers, but DEFCON seems to have much MUCH more substance. Any tips for someone who has not attended either and must choose?

To get a feel for what actually goes on at HOPE panels, you could go to some of the past HOPE sites (all liked from HOPE's wikipedia entry [wikipedia.org] ) and check out the freely available MP3s of all the talks which were given.

How is HOPE cheaper than DEFCON? $100 bucks to get in for the weekend, and it's in VEGAS (baby) which is still cheaper than NY!
