Joss Whedon's "Doctor Horrible" Set To Launch

kdawson posted more than 6 years ago | from the we-all-need-a-hobby dept.

It's funny. Laugh. 245

Ololiuhqui writes "During the writer's strike, Joss Whedon came up with a musical idea. Now his diabolical plan is about to be unleashed in the form of a streaming-only release, with a DVD shortly to follow. The three-part Doctor Horrible series stars Neil Patrick Harris as the eponymous doctor, Felicia Day as the woman of his dreams, and Nathan Fillion as the doctor's nemesis, Captain Hammer. Reportedly made for 'less than six figures,' the series has already received rave reviews and will no doubt showcase Whedon's musical facility, as well as his proven ability to squeeze the most out of a budget."

Don't forget to also check out the others Joss' current works:

  • Dollhouse [wikipedia.org] , a TV series that will start on January 2009 (but there will be pirated episodes on TPB probably much sooner); enjoy the trailer [youtube.com] and an interview [youtube.com] ;
  • the BtVS season 8 [wikipedia.org] ; I'm not a comic book person, but this is incredibly awesome! Guess who Buffy is sleeping with now? ;-)

I was like 10 when that show came out, and I'm 22 now. I didn't give a shit about tits then dude, it was a good sci-fi show about battling demons and vampires, that mixed-in some good non-vampire story elements.

You really can't find too many shows where the title character isn't attractive. If the story was shit, no amount of T and A would have kept it going for like 7 seasons.

Personally, I think he's one of the greatest actors out there today. It's a shame to see someone so underrated, when they clearly have so much potential. I quite often think to myself while watching a tv/movie "you can clearly tell they're acting" etc. However, with Fillion (in Firefly, especially), I've never thought that - I'm always too busy being enthralled by the excellently portrayed character.

Just my 2 cents.

Damned straight. Here we are in Oz, 51st state of the USA, and we can't see something that has been widely marketed and trumped up. Going with something so closed as Hulu rather than putting it out for all the world, after the marketing, is a phenomenally bad marketing move.

Re:Inside the US only? (1)

Here we are in Oz, 51st state of the USA

I've heard this turn of phrase before. As an ignorant American I wasn't aware that the Aussies felt that way, either ironically or sincerely. From whence does it come?

It does seem awfully stupid that they won't stream it overseas. I doubt that the creative people had anything to do with that.

Re:Inside the US only? (2, Informative)

It's thanks to our previous government, who did absolutely everything they could to roll over and happily take whatever crap the US wanted to dish out, regardless of the wishes of the public. That's why we've been screwed over on imports/exports, have to live under the DMCA, and watched our universal health care stabbed in the back. Bastards are out of office now, thankfully.

Be aware that this is one extreme viewpoint. American Cultural Imperialism is alive and well and as offensive as ever but AU is definitely not 'the 51st state'. Of course, if you're a mindless drone who listens to pre-packaged music and only watches Channel 10, you might not be bright enough to tell the difference.

lantastik (877247) | more than 6 years ago | (#24191759)

WTF are you talking about, did you click the link?

Time Zone Notes:

Doctor Horrible is set to launch Act 1 at 12:01am EST - that means that the time zones in other parts of the world are:
US/Eastern Mon 14th 10:01 PM
US/Central Tue 15th 12:01 AM
US/Pacific Tue 15th 2:01 AM
Europe/London Tue 15th 6:01 AM
Europe/Paris Tue 15th 7:01 AM
Australia/Perth Tue 15th 1:01 PM
Australia/Sydney Tue 15th 3:01 PM
New Zealand Tue 15th 5:01 PM

Is he quoting worldwide timezones as a cruel joke? I believe what you are referencing is the note in the FAQ which most likely pertains to the DVD release.

Re:Only in the US (1)

gehrehmee (16338) | more than 6 years ago | (#24191813)

  1. Those time zones are completely wrong, as it's earlier on the west coast than on the east coast at any given time.
  2. Did you click the link? Doing so right now indicates that Act I is available now. Trying to open it (at least here in Canada) results in Hulu's standard boiler-plate about not streaming anything outside the US.

Like to smoke marijuana legally? Move to Italy and become a Rastafarian!
-------
Rastafarians have always regarded Ethiopia as the promised land, but Italy could rank a close second after its Supreme Court ruled that smoking or possessing cannabis is not a criminal offence but a religious act when the person doing it is a Rastafarian.

Last year, the same court declared that cultivating even a single cannabis plant was a punishable offence. But now Italy's Court of Cassation has said Rastafarians use marijuana "not only as a medical but also as a meditative herb. And, as such [it is] a possible bearer of the psychophysical state to contemplation and prayer".

Release, the London-based drugs information service, said that the ruling was a European first.

The case was brought by a man in his forties from Perugia who was sentenced to 16 months in jail plus a UKP4,000 ( UKP 3,000 ) fine in 2004 for possession of 97g of marijuana. The Supreme Court said the court of first appeal had failed to consider that the man, a Rastafarian, smoked marijuana according to the precepts of his religion, which, the judges said, permits the smoking of 10g per day. Rastafarians smoke the drug, said the court, "with the memory and in the belief that the sacred plant grew on the tomb of King Solomon".

The government is livid. The judgment "shatters the laws which forbid and proscribe penal sanctions for" the use of illegal drugs, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

Right-wing politicians were scathing. Senator Maurizio Gasparri said: "Today we learn a Rasta is free to go around with drugs. If somebody belonged to a religion which permitted them to eat their children, would they give them the go-ahead, too?"

But the verdict was received with joy at Rototom Sunsplash, Europe's biggest festival of reggae music, near Udine, in north-east Italy. "Finally the principle of religious pluralism is beginning to make headway," Filippo Giunta, president of the festival, said. "This judgment ... underlines again the difference between this substance and so-called 'hard' drugs, alcohol included."

I couldn't get the actual download to work yet, but you can buy a season pass [apple.com] (iTunes link) for all three acts - just $4!

US doesn't understand.... (2, Informative)

Its becoming a standing point with me to not even bother to look at anything produced in the US anymore. Not because I don't think I'll like it. Not because I have anything against the US. This was special though, this was Joss and I love his stuff. But... because the US won't share with the rest of the world, I can't see it. I see all the CSI on TV, I hear all the latest songs on the radio.... but on the Internet I look elsewhere for content, too many times I get "only avalaible in the US". Wake up before you lose your audiences forever, you have a medium expanding daily in the 100's of million eyeballs and your audience is shrinking daily because of outdated, and frankly stupid rules regarding distribution. Sorry Joss, but if this ever becomes available outside the States I simply won't be bothered to go look. cheers obi

Seems that it's an unfortunate oversight, and they'll have it fixed soon. At least in this case.

As of right now (12:49 AM Central), it is viewable in Canada, direct from the Dr. Horrible site, via Hulu. Hooray!

And now the page is broken for me. The fan site or whatever it is has a post addressing the international viewing problems, which is encouraging.

I guess it's kinda cute. (1)

I watched the first episode. It was mildly amusing, especially for free, but the long-term goal is to make you buy it on DVD or paid download - it's only free for a week, and there's no way this is worth money.

Come on - not $4??? (1)

It's $4 for a season pass on iTunes. No way, is the amusement value of even the first episode alone not worth $4.
