Listen Online To Last HOPE Conference

Soulskill posted about 6 years ago | from the all-good-things dept.

Announcements 49

Radio Statler! writes "This weekend marks 2600's last Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) conference at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. For those of you that can't make it this weekend, Radio Statler! will be streaming live from the event the whole weekend. There will be simulcasted talks, interviews with speakers and important guests, and music 24 hours a day for the duration of the con. Listeners can request music or submit questions by phone or IRC." The conference schedule (PDF) is available if you're curious about a particular seminar, though not all of them will be broadcast. CNet will be running some related stories about presentations from the conference. So far, they've written about a hacking how-to presentation. We briefly discussed the seventh and final HOPE conference last month.

Not going to be there.... (2)

Wish I could be... hopefully this will not actually be the final HOPE conference.

Bad article. It doesn't explain what the HOPE conference is.

This is slashdot, if you don't know what HOPE is you should turn in your geek card. Seriously, when an article mentions Perl do they need to explain what Perl is? When an article mentions cross site scripting does it need to explain what xss is? This is a geek website not computerworld.com. Maybe you are in the wrong place?

Others didn't know either. Don't attack me because I don't know something you think I should know.

There will probably be a new HOPE at some point (1)

Am I a bad geek for not knowing what this is all about?

Re:Sorry (1)

SanityInAnarchy (655584) | about 6 years ago | (#24249157)

Apparently stands for "Hackers On Planet Earth."

Re:Sorry (1)

GXTi (635121) | about 6 years ago | (#24249161)

Perhaps, but I'm puzzled too -- the least the submitter could have done is allocated half a sentence to informing the blissfully ignorant such as ourselves.

Re:Sorry (3, Informative)

ricebowl (999467) | about 6 years ago | (#24249987)

Your geek-card may be reissued as 'provisional,' but no, you're not bad ;) HOPE, as noted is the 'Hackers on Planet Earth, held I think in New York by the 2600 [2600.com] crew at, from reading 2600 quarterly, the HOtel PEnnsylvania in New York. The reason it's the last HOPE is because the Hotel they've used for the past 6 years (HOPEs 1-6) is about to be either redeveloped or demolished. I'm not sure which.

This might be the last HOPE, but there's no certainty it'll be the last 2600 get-together/conference. Here's hoping anyway.

Re:Sorry (3, Informative)

ricebowl (999467) | about 6 years ago | (#24250033)

My bad, it's a biennial conference, so...I guess that'd be last 12 years or so. The wiki, if you've not gone there already is over at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.O.P.E. [wikipedia.org] .

Re:Sorry (1)

Walter Carver (973233) | about 6 years ago | (#24295787)

Why didn't they arange a meeting in another Hotel, so that this will not be the last Hope?

Thx 4 the streams.. I guess I'll have to stay up a little longer tonight... we're 6 hours ahead here. Video would be nice aswell, but I'm not complaining. I do wish I was there though...

Re:Direct links to streams (2, Informative)

Video will be available after the conference, probably for money. The radio station's operating off donated bandwidth, and we have nowhere near enough for video streams.

This is a really bad loss for the hacker (in the real sense of the word) community. I've never actually made it out to one before but I've made sure to listen to the majority of the recordings from the past conferences. There's some great content by some really intelligent speakers and I know that I'm really looking forward to some of the talks this year. Check out the list to see if you find anything you're interested in (you probably will): The Last HOPE [thelasthope.org] .

new2_60605 (1328721) | about 6 years ago | (#24251149)

Emanuel Goldstein is just another self righteous jackass who sold his soul to the US Government after 9/11, another jack off that decided the illusion of security is better than REAL security or freedom of any kind. After 9/11 2600 agreed to edit its content and censor its content in accordance with requests from the secret service. ADDITIONALLY 2600 has helped law enforcement to apprehend black hat hackers (look up Indiana State Police V PRM) the defendant was unknown till some one at 2600 (editor and chief) decided to "anonymously" inform the Indiana State Police about possible illegal changes to database records owned by the state. for the record i stopped paying for that crappy magazine.. most of the stuff you can find in there is online for free now. and if you read this EG... you know exactly what I am talking about a$$hole!

Re:fuckem (1)

byolinux (535260) | about 6 years ago | (#24251209)

Got any evidence to back up these claims?

Re:fuckem (1)

dreamchaser (49529) | about 6 years ago | (#24254781)

Of course he doesn't; he's trolling. Try to find evidence out there for any of his claims. You won't find anything.

Re:fuckem (1)

strelitsa (724743) | about 6 years ago | (#24251457)

Is this the same Emmanuel Goldstein that posts on the Hannity boards? If so, she'll be very surprised to learn that she had a sex change operation and is now a he.

Re:fuckem (2, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 years ago | (#24252153)

Wow, when new2_60605 realizes you can't make a living being pissed at random people you've never met, he's going to be PISSED! Anyway, let's destroy his little fantasy world argument:

-Emanuel Goldstein is self-righteous because he has decided that real security is better than the illusion of security. Not the other way 'round. He just can't yell about that all day. It would make for bad radio/magazine/allkindsofthings.

-2600 doesn't edit its content for anything but the occasional spelling or grammar mistake - I know several contributors, and not a single one has ever had an article declined or edited for content.

-"Look up Indiana State Police v. PRM". I did. I found no such case. If you can find it, please provide a link to a reputable source (p.s. it's editor IN chief).

-"Most of the stuff you can find in there is online for free now" Yeah? Well, I happen to have some copies of 2600 right here. Let's see if I can find any of this awesome shit online:

"Exploring RoadRunner's Internal Network" - no results other than the table of contents at 2600.net

"Hacking with LD_PRELOAD" - I've got some results for hacking LD_PRELOAD implementations, but none for doing anything like what is described in the article. Sidenote: If this wasn't in 2600, I'd have no idea you could even do that and would never have thought to look.

"Capturing Botnet Malware Using a Honeypot" - A veritable smorgasbord! Amazing. Alright, I'm going to go read some of this. I'll leave this tab open and get back to you.

OK, back. It's been like 3 hours. I got stuck in one of those wikipedia-esque things where you click a bunch of links to open in new tabs, and then a bunch of links from each tab... just a mess, really. I still don't know shit about capturing botnet malware using a honeypot. You know why? Because on the internet, there are two kinds of people: those that know how to capture malware with a honeypot, and those that are willing to teach people things. I'm going to read the 2600 article now.

Back. It's been 12 minutes (hurf durf slowreader). I think I could probably manage to set up a honeypot - maybe not a perfect one, mind you, but I could do it. The article was clear, concise, and above all, COMPLETE. You don't get that on the internet. L0j1k's article was basically "Get tools A, B, C. Do X. Wait for botnet infection. Do Y. Now you have a bot, let's see what you can expect to see: M, N, O, P, and Q. Let's examine these with tools D, E, F. See? Great. In the future, try G, H, I, and J."

THAT IS HOW YOU WRITE AN ARTICLE.

Online, to learn the same techniques as L0j1k's article describes, you'd have to learn tools A, B, C, D, E, and F individually, probably from poorly-written forum posts and impenetrable user manuals. You'd be on your own trying to make sense of a bot unless you already knew how they were written.

I've come up with an analogy to you saying "most of the stuff you can find in there is online for free now". It's like somebody saying "most of the stuff in [Nintendo Power/whatever gaming magazine] you can find online for free". Well, no SHIT. The thing is, those magazines - like 2600 - are held to a much higher standard than the retarded chimps firing off FAQs online. Actually, this is not a good enough analogy, because some of those FAQs are pretty fucking sweet. But the point remains: most online material which covers similar subjects to 2600 is written by either idiots (or people too smart to bother with things like, you know, spelling).

Re:fuckem (1)

somedarnguy (1311875) | about 6 years ago | (#24253049)

so what you're really saying is that EG kept rejecting your articles for publication?

Re:fuckem (0, Troll)

new2_60605 (1328721) | about 6 years ago | (#24259267)

to answer the replys... First, no im not a publisher or a writer of any kind... any one who pays attention to my grammar would know that. Second no I do not have proof anymore as this incident was over 5 years ago... plus its not often a BLACK HAT will sign an affidavit incriminating himself without some sort of blanket immunity that would be stupid like the guy asking me to post evidence. and third no it is not the same EG that you are talking about (to the guy who asked if it was a woman named EG). Any other replies will probably be ignored as this is now old news.

So Long and Thanks for all the FISH! (1)

Hey, Question... (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 6 years ago | (#24265679)

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone was able to capture the stream for those of us who couldn't catch the whole weekend. I was able to capture a few speakers / sessions in .mp3 format. If anyone was able to capture the full weekend set, or wants to trade captured streams, email me at sh0ckten(at)gmail(dot)com. I'll be glad to upload what I was able to capture to rapidshare for those who missed the few sessions I was able to grab.
Anyway, I so hope that this wasn't the last Hope but we shall see. Thanks so much to those who contact me with the ability to share captured streams.
Thanks again,
sh0ckten
