Physics Nerds Rap About the LHC

ScuttleMonkey posted more than 5 years ago | from the rock-you-in-the-head dept.

Engadget has pointed out a small band of people even we can consider nerdy that decided to cut loose and demo CERN's fancy new toy, the Large Hadron Collider. The resulting music video is certainly enough to "rock you in the head," and maybe even enough to cause a rip in space-time. Between Alpinekat and Dr Spatzo, I think my iPod just got a new entry.

Yo, Kidz in da hood, "rap" is 3/4s of "crap".

And the other 1/4 is, of course, "C"

The bad news: The LHC might destroy the world.

The good news: The guys who made this rap video, along with Michael Bolton, are going up in smoke with us.

Re:Already on Slashdot? (0)

FYI. LHC destroying the world is a total crock.

"Hey, no, how you doin? Wanna see my large hadron collider?"

"Hey, baby. Wanna go in the back and see...the injection apparatus?"

"Hey, baby. Wanna see my microscopic object that only lasts a nanosecond before it goes away? Oh, wait. That came out wrong."

Re:Already on Slashdot? (1)

Gromius (677157) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564949)

it was heavily featured in the comments of the previous LHC article a week ago, which is why you think its a dupe but technically its not. Or maybe it is, does reposting comments in a previous article as a new article count as a dupe?

That rocks! (5, Interesting)

clang_jangle (975789) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564451)

I love geek rock, and that one really does rock! That lead rapper is awesome, and the lyrics are simply fantastic. The vid itself is quite cool as well.

Re:That rocks! (2, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#24564489)

I thought the cameo by MC Steven Hawking was great...

Re:That rocks! (3, Insightful)

ThePromenader (878501) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564507)

Okay, the scientists dancing are tragically white, but the lyrics and graphics rock - even grade-schoolers would 'get it'. This should be teaching material.

Re:That rocks! (2, Informative)

clang_jangle (975789) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564581)

I think the "tragically white" moves are meant to be parody, actually. But you're right, this is excellent teaching material, and I hope it will get used for that. The lyrics are just so superbly crafted, and Alpinekat really delivers them.

Re:That rocks! (5, Insightful)

Gromius (677157) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564967)

Yes the coolest and most impressive thing about it in my opinion is that it is 99% scientifically accurate and condenses the science into a pretty reasonable and semi complete explanation without losing too much. The only artistic liberty I spotted is that it claims we should spot the Higgs boson straight away which is wishful thinking :)

Re:That rocks! (1)

azgard (461476) | more than 5 years ago | (#24565081)

The only artistic liberty I spotted is that it claims we should spot the Higgs boson straight away which is wishful thinking :)

I guess that CERN people actually believe that one. :-)

Re:That rocks! (2, Interesting)

Gromius (677157) | more than 5 years ago | (#24589715)

Some do, most dont. However it is the offical proganda :)

Basically if its in the exact right place and we get very lucky we could see it early next year. We could also win the lottery (to be fair the chances of seeing the Higgs straight away isnt as bad as that but its not good).

Signed,
A particle physicist who hopes the Higgs doesnt exist as that would be a disappointment.

Re:That rocks! (4, Funny)

should_be_linear (779431) | more than 5 years ago | (#24565463)

The only artistic liberty I spotted is that it claims we should spot the Higgs boson straight away which is wishful thinking

They should yell to that machine: "Will the real Higgs boson please stand up?"

Re:That rocks! (1)

h4rm0ny (722443) | more than 5 years ago | (#24565041)

Okay, the scientists dancing are tragically white

If something looks stupid, that doesn't change based on someone's skin colour. No exceptions.

But that said, I think the video is actually pretty groovy and I can also see the odd teacher showing it in a classroom (if teachers are still allowed to do something not listed on their government curriculum).

Btw, one the best and most influential rappers is white. *cough*Eminem*cough*

Oi.

Re:That rocks! (1)

untaken_name (660789) | more than 5 years ago | (#24566671)

Only because he's better than all of them. And yes, I love Sage, Alias, and Slug but seriously...the only white boy who could MAYBE handle Eminem in a battle would be Eyedea and he would probably lose like he did in the rap olympics. Whether you like it or not, Eminem is really, really talented. As much as it may pain me to say it, there's a reason he's sold more albums than all the rappers you mentioned put together.

Re:That rocks! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#24566975)

Well that's funny. I have heard of none of them but swear I have heard of Eminem.

One made it big, the others did not make it as big. Not saying that makes him better per-se, but he did something more right than they did.

Re:That rocks! (1)

nomadic (141991) | more than 5 years ago | (#24567393)

Sage Franics, Aesop Rock, Alias, Dose One, Scroobius Pip, El-P and dozens of others also happen to be white, and you cite freaking Eminem?

You honestly consider those people to be "influential"?

Re:That rocks! (1)

rootooftheworld (1284968) | more than 5 years ago | (#24584483)

Why have I only heard about Eminem as a white rapper? Oh, right cuz he's the only one who knows how to make a raket about himself. I'm not trolling, but lets face it, he's the big dady of white rap (no pun intended). BTW, were you trolling yourself?

Re:That rocks! (2, Funny)

Why rap is still so popular? (1)

JSlope (1180805) | more than 5 years ago | (#24597791)

Why is rap still so popular? I think it answers the 21 century carving for information, for example the same information as in main article will have doubled it's length in almost any other modern music style.

YouTube is. Somebody put LSD in the water supply in their programming department, is all I can figure.

Re:AAAh my ears! (1)

waztub (1166611) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564807)

That's the work of a badly used compressor. It gets two signal inputs, and lowers one whenever the other reaches a certain volume level, basically. Someone misused it in this recording, apparently.

Re:AAAh my ears! (2, Informative)

hcetSJ (672210) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564909)

This version has better sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3iryBLZCOQ [youtube.com] (and something of an explanation of the poor sound in the original).

Re:AAAh my ears! (1)

Tom9729 (1134127) | more than 5 years ago | (#24566427)

I noticed that too.

This song reminds me of one of the Bill Nye music videos, and I like it but this version is really hard to listen to because the volume keeps changing.

Re:Youtube links (2, Funny)

Hektor_Troy (262592) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564757)

And in future news, a large contingent of nerds world wide cried out in joy as the Large Hadron Collider was turned on today.

Surprising to some people, they managed to create a miniature black hole. However, LHC lead scientists informed us that it only lasted for 16 seconds after being created inside RIAA headquaters, and completely dissapated after having absorbed it.

We were unable to reach the RIAA for comments.

caywen (942955) | more than 5 years ago | (#24564601)

Given that LHC will create a black hole that will cause a time loop, the amount of time wasted by these guys will loop over and over, meaning they have wasted an infinite amount of time with this video. That pisses me off.
