Sony Guarantees Playstation "Home" Launch Before 2009

Soulskill posted more than 6 years ago | from the range-on-the-home dept.

PlayStation (Games) 59

Sony's Martijn Van der Meulen gave an update on the progress of Sony's Playstation "Home" environment, telling IGN there is "a 100 percent guarantee that Home will be released by the end of this calendar year." Originally intended for use on the PS2, the release was pushed back several times as Sony sought to improve the concept. One thing Sony has been trying to accomplish is making the game "safe" and accessible to kids while maintaining an adults-only area. They maintain that it is not a social network, but rather a "visual representation of the PlayStation community."

Guaranteed! (3, Insightful)

Zerth (26112) | more than 6 years ago | (#24746729)

Yup, they'll release it this year, whether it sucks or not. It'll be almost like PC software, just slap it out there and patch afterwards.

It's not like they need to be first-to-market or something...

Well they're already in open beta, so I'd avoid the snark, X-BOT.

Re:Guaranteed! (3, Funny)

Zerth (26112) | more than 6 years ago | (#24747619)

I didn't say it wasn't going to happen, I just said they'll rush it.

And I don't own an Xbox 3shitty, so complete miss there. If I wanted yet another half-assed Microsoft product, I'd get a copy of Vista.

You'd be a LOT happier with an XBOX 360 than a copy of Vista.

Technically doesn't that depend on whether he's happier with a red ring or a blue screen?

I can't believe I'm going to defend Vista (1)

HannethCom (585323) | more than 6 years ago | (#24753451)

I've never had a blue screen in Vista yet. I've used it for about a month on my main computer (Back to XP) and it is currently the only OS on my laptop.

Now I have had the whole thing lockup when trying to do an analog capture which required a hard reboot, but it didn't blue screen.

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#24754517)

Oddly enough the blue screen was sometimes useful in at least telling you what driver crashed (or giving SOME hint of what happened).

Locking up is a step backward, but probably a step forward from MicroSofts perspective ("No more Blue Screen's of Death"? "Check")

Re:I can't believe I'm going to defend Vista (1)

somersault (912633) | more than 6 years ago | (#24762293)

It was just a joke, I wasn't even sure if Vista still had blue screens to start with. Even if it was completely stable I wouldn't touch it because of how slow it is. My uncle's laptop has a slightly faster processor than mine, same amount of RAM, but in practice it runs noticeably slower. Especially on basic stuff like startup and shutdown where you'd think MS would have done something smart like have the system startup state actually as a kind of hibernation recovery that loads a fully started up state into the system (this state would have to be updated when you install new startup applications or OS patches of course), that type of thing.

"Technically doesn't that depend on whether he's happier with a red ring or a blue screen?"

If either were even remotely as common as Slashdot's made them out to be, then yes.

Re:Guaranteed! (1)

somersault (912633) | more than 6 years ago | (#24762321)

The RROD was extremely common.. perhaps not any more, but you're right, I wouldn't know. I didn't even know if Vista still had the BSOD until I looked it up. I don't use Vista on my own machine though, and hopefully never will have to. Stability doesn't really come into my dislike for Vista. I used to dislike the idea of 'having' to upgrade to XP to use certain apps, but then I tried it and it actually started up just as quick, or quicker, than my 98 machine. With Vista this is definitely not the case. I don't agree with making software inefficient simply because more resources are available, it misses the point entirely. Thankfully the world seems to have agreed, and hopefully Windows 7 will be better, or MS will simply become more and more irrelevant unless they learn how to write efficient software.

Besides, it was just a joke.

Re:Guaranteed! (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#24746971)

Beats the most recent firmware, which prevents some PS3s to read Blu-ray or DVD discs. Including game discs.

Or the firmware it fixed which simply bricked PS3s. I suppose being limited to downloaded titles is, technically, an improvement over not being able to use the system at all.

I can't wait to see what the Live! update - I'm sorry, "Home" update - breaks.

You're aware that both of those issues occurred in very seldom cases, right?

The gaming media is quick to exaggerate any flaw in any of the three systems, if only to keep the console war (and fanboy war) running strong.

I cant remember the last time I inserted a new disk in my 360 and wasnt prompted for an update. Pretty much all games are patched just after release today (PC or otherwise) as a ham fisted DRM system, they actually "break" the software before they ship it.

"Guarantee" or not, I've given up on Home (1)

elrous0 (869638) | more than 6 years ago | (#24750539)

"Home" was actually one of the reasons I bought my PS3. Since I bought it, a dearth of good exclusives and the AWOL status of Home has led me to basically just use it as a blu-ray player. "Home" was to be one of the few things that PSN had that Xbox Live didn't do better already (and since all my friends are on Xbox Live, the only reason to ever use PSN). But I've basically given up on the idea that Home (if ever deployed at all) will ever look anything like what they originally promised. There have been too many delays and too many backdowns from their original hype.

When it comes to playing blu-rays, the PS3 does just fine. When it comes to quality exclusives and actually delivering on promises, the PS3 is a joke compared to the 360. I love my blu-ray player. But as a games console--it has earned the "Delaystation" moniker.

Nah, let him just keep repeating that tired old meme.

We'll keep enjoying the Ratchet & Clank Future and Resistance series, Drake's Fortune, Warhawk (psyched about the new expansion due out this week), Little Big Planet, God of War 3, or downloadable games like Super Startdust HD, Pixel Junk Monsters, etc. The lack of games from when the PS3 launched is a thing of the past. If he doesn't want to look at what's available, thats his problem. Heck, there are enough free demos he could download if he wanted to try out most of them.

Of course, there is also the Video download store now, an in game XMB, Trophies, and the DLNA compliant client so you can stream media in lots of different formats to it from Windows Linux or OSX.

Its not like Sony has closed the gap with the Live! and is getting ready to pass it or something.~

Re:"Guarantee" or not, I've given up on Home (1)

elrous0 (869638) | more than 6 years ago | (#24754947)

Actually, I've played all of those games except Ratchet and Clank and the two on your list which you claim to be enjoying but which aren't even out yet. I enjoyed Warhawk, but only until Halo 3 multiplayer came out. Drake's Fortune is a nice-looking platformer, but is pretty mediocre once you get past the pretty water effects. Resistance is just a run-of-the-mill FPS like any other FPS. Warhawk and Metal Gear Solid 4 are the the only PS3 exclusives worth anything more than a rental.

And you are aware that only a few PS3 games even support trophies at present right? I mean, a PS3 expert like you that gets to play God of War 3 and Little Big Planet so far in advance of their releases MUST know that. And, how exactly is PSN "closing the gap" on video downloads when Xbox Live just announced a deal with Netflix to put it worlds ahead of anything the PSN can do?

I'm not saying that the 360 is perfect by any means. The hardware is complete shit--with RROD problems, no standard hard drive (STUPID move, MS!), and an increasingly obsolete DVD drive. But, as far as software and online play goes, the PS3 has a LONG way to go to catch up.

I've been surprised at just how well it's selling. According to Wikipedia, 14 million units sold worldwide vs 19 million for the 360.

According the vgchartz [vgchartz.com] , 20.35M and 14.89M as the writing of this message. Also, please note that the PS3 is currently outselling week after week the XBox, although TBH at this trend it's gonna take 3-4 years before they reach it. I don't think Sony is having financial problems, for those worried; the PSP is selling good and with a profit on each unit.

Doesn't second life involve semi-programming to make those sex scenes? (Asking honestly, I've never been tempted to try second life). Does that sound like something a sony game will do? Tommy: Here's the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to fell all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing too]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shit. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.
Ted Nelson, Customer: [pause] Okay, I'll buy from you.
Tommy: Well, that's...

Home is a vortex of mystery (1)

AbRASiON (589899) | more than 6 years ago | (#24747861)

If Sony get home right, it could be absoloutely brilliant, in an addictive, chatroom kind of way, it could be the next second life, without a doubt.
That being said, it's a huge concept and a lot of work, especially on a closed platform, I know this post will be a bit of a 'duh!' but I'm betting home is either extremely successful or a huge failure, not much room inbetween.

I love my PS3 but I am betting on failure mind you, getting the formula right first try would be incredibly difficult and considering how well Sony copy other companies (Xbox Live for example) well, they clearly suck at copying a good product when it's right there in front of them to just copy, nope they have to slowly, slowly get there, bit by bit :/

Re:Home is a vortex of mystery (1)

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 6 years ago | (#24748249)

Wouldn't success also require a userbase that cares about the concept of Home?

Re:Home is a vortex of mystery (1)

AbRASiON (589899) | more than 6 years ago | (#24748275)

I wouldn't say I 'care' as a PS3 enthusiast nor am I seriously interested but I will say I'm curious and that's all they need (I THINK it's free isn't it? you only pay for addons or something?)

So if it's free, curious people will check, if it's a killer app, bingo - huge adoption, fast, in theory anyhow.

powerlord (28156) | more than 6 years ago | (#24752543)

All the info I've read says it will be free.

All the info I've seen says that the core functionality is free, but that there will still be "premium content" users will have to pay for.

For instance, you'll be given a basic starter apartment for free, but be able to buy a bigger space (to hold more stuff, some free, some not), for a small fee.

Not a bad middle ground for the system, since it lets users have a fully useable system for free, but lets people who believe that the "flame stickers make it go faster" pay for that privilege (and it helps encourage third parties to make items for sale, or to pay for "display space"/ads in Home which helps pay for an otherwise free infrastructure).

Re:Home is a vortex of mystery (1)

xhrit (915936) | more than 6 years ago | (#24753231)

Live might have more content then the psn, but it is not exactly good. For one thing it is so slow - too much time is spent looking at a stupid spinning circle in live. Second, you have to pay for the ability to use the good parts (like being able to play games online). And the good parts are unreliable, with massive rolling outages.

But that is ok. You got a FREE XBox LIVE Arcade to compensate for the service being so unstable.

And a promise about how microsoft is going to enhance their dreamcast3 with a copy ov sony's home but with nintendo's miis in it. with me-too motion sensitive controls. and an eye toy^H camera.
