Buffy MMO Announced, Firefly MMO Delayed

Soulskill posted more than 6 years ago | from the you're-my-kinda-stupid dept.

Sci-Fi 209

Zonk brings word that Multiverse, the developer who in 2006 acquired the rights to make a Firefly-based MMO, has announced that a Buffy: The Vampire Slayer MMO is now under development. An interview with Corey Bridges from Multiverse seems to indicate that the Firefly MMO, though delayed, is not dead. He also provides a few details on what the Buffy game will be like. Quoting: "What we're doing with the Buffy game then is releasing it in stages. It will first be a flash-based virtual world, with the full Multiverse server behind it. ... So it will start as a 2D flash-based MMO where you can go on missions and interact with other players. This will extend even once we have the 3D client working, where you can both interact with players using the other point of view. We're going to have these shared spaces where 2D and 3D people can interact. All of this will come out in phases, with staged gameplay coming out. We're sort of blazing a path with this concept, and we're really interested in what this might mean for players of the two versions. ... I'd love to get [a public beta] out to players by the end of the year."

This seems like kind of a flimsy IP to base an MMO on. Aren't there dozens of better choices?

Agreed. I would think that an IP based on a single person in each generation would make for a lousy MMO. Everything in the Buffyverse is about exceptions to rules, and that's believable when you follow a few characters around. But when you get into an MMO environment, the exception quickly becomes the rule as everyone takes the "chosen one" class or the "vampire with a soul" class.

If only there were an IP they could acquire where it's a whole ass-load of people in far flung areas, maybe like the old west, or space or something, where small groups of people move around performing missions. That's the sort of IP that'd make for a great MMO, IMHO.

To be fair, BTVS ended with the creation of thousands of mini Slayers. And, as a bonus, it would finally give dudes a good excuse to play a hot chick in an MMO.

If someone could invent an MMO that was immune to being overtaken by koreans and 13 year old boys (of any age), perhaps I would want to play it. As it is, the AGGR0, LULZ crowd ruins every single one of them -- there's no way to pretend you're part of a story when a kid runs up to you and asks you whether you want him to powerlevel you "reel cheep", or is named YO M0+H3R.

Re:repeat after me (1)

No. The RP servers for WoW selectively enforce character names for "inappropriate" (means "The blizzard monkey who saw it didn't get it") character names. Doesn't stop the PvPtards from flooding Ironforge (or whatever the Dwarf/Gnome capital is called. Been over 2 years) when a pair of dolts gets caught cybering in the tram tunnel.

Re:repeat after me (1)

Yes. Hundreds of thousands of people are playing MMs as you read this. Maybe that time could be used for something else. But books, movies, comics and TV are all passive single player entertainment. MMs are (somewhat) interactive, what the player does (sort of) changes the story.

Not all MMs are time sinks. PlanetSide is an MMFPS (the O is a given) that i play to *play*, not to gain this or that widget or epeener, only to get the next widget. Been playing that every Thursday night for about 5 years and most of the time i love it.

While I think the idea is largely stupid, it will allow people to play when they shouldn't be playing. A browser-based flash game would make it so you can do your gold-farming in a background tab at work or school all day, then go home at night and fire up the 3D client for some immersive vampire-slaying.

I wouldn't play it, but if it turns out being any good, that's what people are going to do.

Actually if you are smart you do the game isometric, render all the 3d assets out to flash and then they are totally reuseable.

I don't think the game would be all shaderific in flash, but i can see where you could kill 2 birds with one stone.

Re:waste of effort (1)

Josef Meixner (1020161) | more than 6 years ago | (#24878543)

From the article:

They're the same assets in 2D and 3D. We take the 3D assets and we 'shoot' em from a locked-down isometric point of view, then we turn those assets into 2D sprites. It looks very similar between the two formats.

So they intend to render the 3D stuff and use that. But honestly that whole "interview" strikes me as odd. They can't talk about this, can't show that, they are not allowed to tell what happened with Firefly. They can't tell us the style of their artwork or the game play.

For me it sounds like complete vaporware. I don't have the impression they actually have anything that works. I doubt there is any artwork done yet or can you imagine a game company passing on the ability to promote their game they want to release this year? I am not so sure you can just take 3D assets and turn them into useful 2D ones for a game. Things which work in 3D don't always work so well in an iso metric view. I simply don't understand the problems to go straight to 3D, if they have the 3D assets and the game mechanics. Especially if they have been developing on Firefly in 3D, shouldn't they have the code to do a 3D version yet?

To me that whole thing sounds like a company in need of a new round of VC financing.

Most MMOs (5, Interesting)

PhasmatisApparatus (1086395) | more than 6 years ago | (#24877413)

Most MMOs focus on two concepts: a unique combat system and different skills to level. A Buffy MMO sounds interesting enough, until you realize that the developers would have to stray too far from the TV series in order to make it a good game.

First, the combat in the Buffyverse has always been minimal. Buffy explains in painful detail to the vampires why they can't win, and she'll kick their heads in if they try anything. Once an episode, one of them tries somethings. Buffy kicks heads in. End of episode, at least as far as fighting goes.

As for skills, well, there's not much of that in the series, either. Buffy has always been killing vampires. It's what she does. Giles is always the librarian who has read every book on the occult, but still never notices anything wrong until someone points it out first. +3 intellect/+1 cluelessness. But I am getting silly here.

The point is, the game will either conform to the Buffyverse, or the game will distort the Buffyverse to make it work. Either way, it cannot end well.

If you don't get the Firefly MMO back in full-time production, then I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.

Swallow bugs much?

btw...Summer wouldn't talk that way. That is something more along what Mal would say.

Are we talking about what the actress might say, or what the character might say?
Near as I can tell, Summer's kind of a sweetheart, I don't think she'd threaten anybody. Just sayin'. As for River, it seems a little... coherent, don't you think? I agree Mal would say this. Probably in Chinese.

I know the "Summer Glau" was an XKCD reference, but come on... She wasn't even IN that scene.

My days of not taking slashdot seriously have certainly come to a middle... :)

Flash Based Adventure Game Engine (-1, Offtopic)

lefticus (5620) | more than 6 years ago | (#24877801)

Seems like the perfect opportunity to mention the flash based adventure game engine I've been working on. The idea is to revolutionize the webcomic and make it interactive. It's open source, uses actionscript/php/drupal to allow you to build your mini adventure game in drupal and share it on your site.

Source is hosted at google code [googlecode.com] .
Pinheads [emptycrate.com] : the first game written for it and 2nd place in the "Creativity" catagory in this year's Chistian Developer's Network Speedgame contest [christiandevs.com] .
Covered City [emptycrate.com] : A weekly updated mini scifi adventure game, currently on episode 2 (episodes 3 and 4 are already produced, but not public).

Oh yeah, and anyone is free to create an account at http://game.emptycrate.com/ [emptycrate.com] and make your own adventure game.

DON'T YOU DARE ACT SUPRISED SLASHDOTTERS!

Any generation that can make a "Desparate Housewives" game and a sequel to "90210" deserves whatever nonsense MMO they birth!

I've also see a BRATZ video game, too many Barbie games to count, and about 200 old crappy FPS games based off the old Doom and Doom 2 engines. I've seen really bad attempts at serious Murder-Mystery games (Myst and Phantasmagoria being a few of the exceptions to the wave of shit they put out in that genre).

"Garbage in, Garbage Out. Counts for data, and counts for life"

Face it, there is the future of the gaming industry. I bet they'll blame the low subscription rate on the conviently leaked source code and demand the government subsidize them due to the evil pirates.

Down down down, right down the shitter only twice as fast as the movie industry's slide into irrelivance...

Books: they don't crash, do need hardware upgrades outside of the occasional new pair of glasses, and so far none of the books I have read have any class imbalances except "Last of the Renshai", the hobbled warrior class was WAY OP'ed!!

give us Firefly ! (3, Interesting)

savuporo (658486) | more than 6 years ago | (#24878117)

Spacesim genre on PC has been basically dead since the late great FreeSpace 2. Okay, there was Freelancer which was semi-decent, but nothing compared to the old great hits like Tie Fighter, best of Wing Commander, Privateer, Tachyon, Independence War or even all the way back to Elite series.

Do not even start about recent flops like Tarr Chronicles, SpaceForce : Rogue Universe or even the entire X series. Eye candy and insance technical requirements bundled with unworkable control schemes not a playable game make. ( A side note: EVE is not a space sim, not the kind that im talking about here )

Now Firefly universe would be a perfect setting for Privateer-like game. You dont even have to be goddamn revolutionary game designer to pull a triple-A hit on this. Just use the best gameplay elements of the past, make a good story ( hey its not like good sci-fi writers are hard to come by), half decent graphics and playable controls and you have a sure winner on that currently barren field.

Yes, i we know Elite 4 and Infinity ( infinity-universe.com ) will be ready Real Soon Now (TM) but i dont think advances in life prolonging medicine are happening fast enough to tide all us space simmers over until then.

Blazing trails? (1)

Um, more like boldly going where angels fear to tread. At best you're going to create a shitty little flash game that acts as a teaser for the full-fledged client, and then discover that there is virtually no reusable code between the two. Nobody's done this before because it's a bad idea on its face-- at best, you're wasting precious coding resources on hype, which is what your PR department is for.

bring on firefly (1)

Screw Buffy (or, rather, that cute red head lesbian), bring on the Firefly game! Much more interested in it than Buffy.

wow, we can't program a 3d client worth shit yet, and/or our 3D artists suck ass.... but hey, we have a nice server... so we'll put up a quick shitty 2D client because we're out of money and don't want to fuck up our good IP on a bad launch.

Ultima Online? (1)

mynameismonkey (658515) | more than 6 years ago | (#24878539)

We're going to have these shared spaces where 2D and 3D people can interact. All of this will come out in phases, with staged gameplay coming out. We're sort of blazing a path with this concept, and we're really interested in what this might mean for players of the two versions.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't Ultima Online available in 2D and 3D clients?

So.. (4, Insightful)

you know when people are high and they come up with really great ideas like breeding and selling hamsters? This sounds kinda like one of those ideas...
