Mega Man 9 Released, DLC announced

Soulskill posted more than 5 years ago | from the dr-wily-returns dept.

Classic Games (Games) 87

Today Capcom released Mega Man 9, the franchise's return to the 8-bit styles of the '90s. It's currently available for the Wii, and will be coming to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live soon. Capcom also announced some upcoming downloadable content, which will include extra difficulty modes and a stage that never ends, in which you are endlessly attacked. It will also give you the option of playing as Proto Man. Unfortunately, since the game is available through downloads only, the awesome box art will not be available to the public. Gamesradar has some screenshots and boss pictures.

To get it, you must use Plug Man's weapon to defeat Socket Woman. You then use Socket Woman's screw attack on the mini-boss GLary Flintzor to get the infamous Pedo-belt Hocmsmocker attack. User the Pedo-belt Hocmscmocker attack on the end-boss, Dr. Hawking and it'll unlock a reverse wormhole we call GET A LIFE AND SNORT ANTS LIKE OZZY.

This game is only a way to play old-skool Mega-man on the newer platforms and it isn't the first [gamespot.com] MM game to do it.

Nothing new [gamesradar.com] to see here [ytmnd.com] , move along.

On the other hand, there are so many damn characters that they could start a Mega Man MMORPG -- would it be called a MMMMORPG? :)

you're missing the point - while i'm personally not a retro gamer, there are a myriad of people who are still speedrunning their old cartridges into the ground. this is an excellent chance to do stuff again on a console as opposed to just emulating it. you'll be able to track scores in real time, download content...it sounds really cool, actually. don't just hate cause it's m$ =)

And I will add that the Wii and PS3 version are much more viable than the xbox360 one because of the terrible, terrible dpad of the 360 controller.

This is not the only way. Remember, the Wii can play Gamecube games, so you can just get a Megaman Anniversary Collection for the Gamecube to play.

It's also available for (at least) the PS2 & Xbox. e.g. ahref=http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-Anniversary-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B00019HNNCrel=url2html-14131 [slashdot.org] http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-Anniversary-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B00019HNNC>
But I should have paid attention to reviews.. The game is HELLA hard.

Didn't Anascape get an injunction barring Nintendo from making and selling GameCube controllers, which are required to play GameCube games on a Wii system? I seem to remember Anascape suing Nintendo over a patent on a spring-loaded analog button that has a tactile snap at the far end of its travel.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (3, Informative)

Hatta (162192) | more than 5 years ago | (#25112107)

Um, no. This isn't a rehash of old mega man games, this is a brand new game in the classic 8 bit style. If you're a mega man fan, you've probably played the hell out of the old ones anyway, so a new mega man is actually a big deal.

With any luck this will prove that there's still a market for classic 2d game play. With the Wii's virtual console doing so well, and updates of classic franchises like 1942, it's a pretty good time to be a retro gamer.

Personally, I'd really like to play this game, but buying a Wii or Xbox 360 for what's essentially an 8 bit game seems like a bit of overkill. Anyone know if this is going to make it to the PC?

Is avoiding "overkill" worth an extra $50? The XBox 360 is now selling for $200.00, while the Wii, if you can find one at retail, is $250.00.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (1)

Hatta (162192) | more than 5 years ago | (#25119259)

IMO, anything over $100 for a game console is too much. I still have my hands full with my Saturn and N64, so it would be silly to spring for a new console right now. In 5-10 years, the current gen consoles will be cheap as shit, and Mega Man 9 will be just as fun as it ever was.

Gradius and R-Type both have new installments coming out as downloads! Similar to this megaman 9.

Not to mention Contra 4 (for DS) is the best sidescrolling game in the history of the world.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (1)

philspear (1142299) | more than 5 years ago | (#25112573)

The "tired ol' megaman" would be the "newer" 3d one. I tried to play one of the newer ones, megaman X#KD_: or something like that (what's the japanese fascination with putting random letters after a title to make a new series? Gundam, okay, Gundam SD? Why not just "The next gundam" or "Gundam: viciously beating a dead horse to the point of making it into red pulp." Long tangent there...)

Uh... anyway, I tried to play it, and it made no sense.

There are some 2d franchises which can be successfully brought into the 3rd dimension. Metroid was one. But the vast majority of them turn out to be crap. For some reason, the parent companies refuse to accept the results of many failed experiments. The 3d castlevanias continue to be mediocre at best. The 2d ones are great. Mortal Kombat also was not much fun in 3d. Megaman is the same way. Whatever it was I was playing was an abomination that should have been killed early. Glad to see that capcom is seeing the light.

If you want a good 3D Mega Man, try Mega Man Legends for the PS1. Imagine Doom, crossed with Tomb Raider, crossed with an RPG. the MML games (MML 1 and 2 and the Tron Bonne game) are the only Mega Man games I like.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (1)

philspear (1142299) | more than 5 years ago | (#25113713)

Well, great, except why they gotta mess with it like that? There are still plenty of things they could have done with 2d. If they wanted to make a franchise that was doom crossed with tomb raider crossed with an RPG... first of all that sounds like complete crap, but second why not make up a new franchise?

If it's quality, you're going to get bites even without brand name recognition. If it's crap, you're just going to ruin a good franchise until you "bring it back old school."

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 5 years ago | (#25116411)

Why szhouldn't they have tried some 3d? It's not like there's some kind of huge magical barrier that you have to take one side of, you can make either as much as you want.

Besides, almost all of the recent and semi-recent Megaman games are 2d (though some use polygons to render the 2d).

philspear (1142299) | more than 5 years ago | (#25116533)

They did. It was crap. They shouldn't KEEP trying it after it didn't work.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (1)

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 5 years ago | (#25127657)

They stopped, didn't they? I only recall the Megaman Legends games (Zelda-like, pretty good), X Command Mission (RPG, not that bad) and X7 (supposedly awful) being 3d, everything else was 2d with X8 and Network Transmission using 3d models to depict that 2d. The entire Zero and ZX series are 2d, the original never got a 3d version AFAIK (though plenty of bad 2d ones), only X had a 3d iteration. So it's not like Sega or Konami who keep bashing their head into the same old wall.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25119289)

Metroid in 2d was better in my opinion. I can't get the hang of the 3d. I'm a pretty lousy 3d gamer but can finish mario 1 at high speed. The display seems to be too cluttered most of the time and jumping in 3d is just too hard.

The only 3d games I can control correctly are halflife and zelda. I'm looking forward to a pc version. And if they're not making one, then hopefully it can be played in one of the console emulators.

Re:Tired ol' Mega Man (1)

0p7imu5_P2im3 (973979) | more than 5 years ago | (#25127769)

It sounds like you played Megaman X7. That game was a horrid piece of filth that should never have polluted the franchise.

I don't think you played Megaman X8, however. Not many people bought it because of the insult that was X7. (I think Capcom has been using alternating teams on their Megaman X series, because typically the odd numbered games sucked if you flip X5 and X6.)

Megaman X8 was the epitome of side-scrolling 3d shooters... not that this is a very large genre... but it was very true to the original Megaman franchise (Megaman and Megaman X) except using 3d graphics. It was arguably one of the top 3, if not my favorite, Megaman.

Yes - I bought the game (though $10 for a slightly-crippled megaman, ouch) and I have to say it is quite fun. It is a bummer that DLC will be so pricey (why not an extremely high amount of bolts as an alternative a la Gunbound?), but still worth it so far - and damn hard, for now - Dr. Light was right when he said that its been awhile.

What I am against is the fact I have to pay extra for it.

I'm not saying they should go through all the trouble of releasing a NES Cart. But this could have been done as a PSX or PSX2 CD/DVD Complete with box art and everything. But no. Its a money grab. No box art. No manual. Just a DRMed up the as download with limitless little extras to keep you paying more and more.

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

Snowspinner (627098) | more than 5 years ago | (#25112947)

You get, for $10 a game. A perfectly playable, fun game.

For a few dollars here and there, you can, if you choose, get add-ons to the game. But if you do not do any of this, you get a game.

Personally, I bought the game, and I am going to play the game. I probably won't get any of the DLC, though I might snatch up extra levels if the price is right. I have no concept of why this is a problem for people. Do you regularly complain when you buy a season of television on DVD that the subsequent episodes aren't included for free?

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

Um, this is a video game. It's not rice. I love Mega Man, but they have every right to sell it for $500 if they want to.

They made Mega Man cost, with all the bells, $12. I mean, you can't buy a new game for $12 today... ever. They're usually $50-$60, and sometimes as cheap brand-new as $30 or even $20. So essentially, you're still getting 10 hours of xbox fun, but for only $12. Do you really care that the "markup" from the game's budget is higher for them? Do you get pissed off paying $10 for a Dark Knight ticket and then having to pay the same to see Juno? I mean, Dark Knight gave me $200 million of awesome IMAX film, great special effects, all for $10. And Juno? It was a nice film, but only cost them $10 million to make, and I still have to pay $10? That's so unfair!

That, in a nutshell, is my argument why this is stupid. It's a $12 game. Or $10 for the fully-functional, but non-special edition version.

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

Mark Programmer (228585) | more than 5 years ago | (#25119885)

In all fairness, you can buy a new game for $12 and less today. The downloadable content channels (XBLA, WiiWare, etc.) have allowed the game developers to cut out the brick-and-mortar distribution channel and pass the cost savings on to the consumer. That's what makes downloadable content so great.

But if people think that they're "nickel-and-dimed" by $6 content, maybe it becomes more economically sensible to jack the cost up to $50 again? That's why I can't fathom what people are thinking when they complain about getting "nickel-and-dimed" by games that cost less than games on a store shelf.

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

w32jon (1317789) | more than 5 years ago | (#25122129)

Well, even if you do pay $2 extra for Protoman, it's still only $12. You'd probably spend more for a meal at a restaurant, or more by going to the movies.

I played through it yesterday, and for $10, you get a pretty complete and fun Megaman game.

Would you feel any different if they released the game for $12, but included Protoman with sliding?

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

Snowspinner (627098) | more than 5 years ago | (#25112969)

You've been able to play new levels of Mega Man for free since Mega Man 3?

Seriously. The game is clearly designed to be playable without sliding and charged shots. Yeah, there are spots where I miss charged shots, and I've encountered so far one bolt that clearly needs sliding to get to it, but you know what? The best game in the series had neither charged shots nor sliding.

You get a fully playable game for $10. It's fun. If you liked MM 1-6, you'll like it. I advise against cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It isn't a regular game though. It doesn't require near the resources to create that a modern game would. Charging extra for stuff that was already finished right out of the box is a way of screwing over the consumer. It sounds like a lot of people are buying it anyways which is too bad. Stuff like this shouldn't be acceptable.

It seems like you have no problem with this. Think about it though...do you really want to buy everything this way? Is the future going to be that you have a "choice" of buying Awesome Game Basic for $50 but if you want all the features you need to buy the Premium or Ultimate version? I sure as heck don't.

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

It doesn't matter how much time/energy/resources went into the game. It's all about demand. It shattered WiiWare download records, which means it's heavily in demand, therefore their price is perfectly justified.

Re:Game is Defective by Design (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25114147)

Bionic Commando Rearmed is an excellent value at $10. Mega Man 9 is the same price, and was probably produced for a lot less. I had a hard time paying $10 for that (I would have preferred $8) but with the DLC bringing it up above $15? That's pretty shitty, I won't be buying it.

Re:Game is Defective by Design (1)

magus_melchior (262681) | more than 5 years ago | (#25114187)

Yeah, Capcom is taking the "downloadable add-ons" idea to an extreme that is unacceptably wrong.

The sad thing is, I suspect many Japanese will buy the game anyway. Some will refuse the add-ons out of frugality or pride in their skills. What I hope that they will not do is design the game to require some of those add-ons at certain points in the game. That would be even more wrong.

You mean people make games to make... MONEY? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25114289)

The game was likely designed to be played without protoman or the slide. As with most downloadable content for titles like this, it's not likely crucial to gameplay. This is nothing new, it's an established business model. It was likely added on as an afterthought because all the info we had before indicated that these features wouldn't be present at all. I'll be buying this game. I probably won't be buying the addons.

All you're saying is that you aren't willing to spend $16 on a new Megaman game that features the sliding and Mega Buster game mechanics, and the option to play as Protoman.

That's up to you, but if I recall correctly I spent more than $16 on Megaman 3, back in the day.

Why Rock doesn't have charge shot in MM9... (1)

Tetsujin (103070) | more than 5 years ago | (#25123103)

You have to BUY the privilige of playing as ProtoMan, sliding and Mega Buster with real money. The game only costs $10, but I've heard that playing as ProtoMan will cost you $4, and sliding will cost you $2.

No, just Hell no. I will not pay for something I can do for free since Mega Man 3

You can't slide in the game while playing as Rock because the new game is a throwback to the classic format - no sliding, no charge-shot, just jumping and blasting the living shit out of enemies with lots of regular shots. To me this is a good thing - going back to the basics, the real strength of the series.

You can probably think of Blues as "easy mode" - if you want a big shield to hide behind, and a charge shot feature and the ability to move more quickly, play Blues.

"Awesome" box art? (1)

ToasterThief (455891) | more than 5 years ago | (#25113601)

The "awesome" aspect of that box art could be strongly contested, especially since Megaman keeps winning the "Worst Box Art Ever" contests on every gaming site.

That MM9 box art is obviously some kind of tribute to the infamous US cover for the first Mega Man on NES. Mind you, I don't think any other MM game actually gets that "worst box art ever".

The artist put a gun in his hand like in the two first US covers and drew him an adult man. He also used a design with a grid on a bluish background like early Capcom titles for the American NES (Mega Man but also Trojan, Gunsmoke, Ghosts'N Goblins, etc).

The idea is pretty good but I'm divided on the design choice. It looks retro and all, which is nice, however by choosing the corny MM1 US cover as a model it could be argued they're just laughing at the artwork from old games. It wouldn't have been that hard to make some retro Mega Man art minus the ridicule. Many old games had amazing box art, especially in Japan (see the PC Engine) but nowadays some people seem to think it's a lot more fun to only publish and show off the terrible ones. That's some cynical retrogamers.

That was the point, smart guy. This whole thing is a love letter to retrogamers and the Mega Man faithful. The box art is supposed to remind you of the terrible box art of the earlier NES titles. It's all about nostalgia here.

I never played Mega Man much (1)

mzs (595629) | more than 5 years ago | (#25125191)

As a kid I played a bunch of other NES games but never much of Mega Man. I downloaded MM9 yesterday and I see a screen when I press + with a two regions where things are listed. In the top for example I can choose an item where a robot dog appears but what does that do?

On the bottom list there are MANY items, can someone tell me what those things do? The instructions are very much lacking in details. Maybe someone knows of a good web site to read that explains this stuff for someone that did not grow-up with MM-MM4 or so. Not a walk through, I want to figure-out the game myself.

Also I am loving this game. My previous favorite game to play was SuperC, and this shares a lot of the qualities of that. It is very rewarding playing MM9 since I get progressively better the more I play the stages and it requires a level of perfection to play well.

The top box is where all your weapon will be. When you defeat a boss, you will gain the weapon of that boss. As for the items, just go to the shop, where you can buy them. You'll find descriptions there.

Yes I see that when I beat a boss then I get a new weapon much like the boss used. But I have this dog 'weapon' in the top list even at the very start of the game. When I use him he appears uses some of my weapon power bar and then disappears. I have NO idea how to actually use this robot dog for anything useful.

Thanks for telling me about how to learn what those items at the bottom do. Do I need to select them after finding them to use them or are they automatic?

The four on the left side must be selected to be used; the four on the right side are either automatically used when necessary (The boot protects you from instant-death spikes, Beat (the bird) rescues you from pits) or are always on (the book changes your hair style; the computer-looking thing makes it so that when "M. Buster" is your selected weapon and you pick up weapon energy, it automatically goes to your lowest weapon).

Jump on the dog. You'll be able to reach higher grounds.

Also, the other item RC is for the Rush Coil, where "Rush" is the name of the dog. When he comes down, jump on him, and he'll give you a boost so that you jump higher.
