Are you saying they sent people up against their will?

This is China - are you mad?

Oh well, Bad Karma and all . . .

Profane MuthaFucka (574406) | more than 5 years ago | (#25236283)

You conservatives are so ignorant sometimes. China has sent people up to space for years, small children. The sewing machines used in the Nike factory are more efficient in zero-G, and a small child can make twice as many sneakers in a spacecraft. It makes no sense to give them helmets and spacesuits, because that would negate the advantage small fingers have in sewing sneakers.

I think that China is sending people up voluntarily is just a stunt.

Keep samzenpus on idle (4, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25236027)

Onion News Network is now considered a reliable news source? Keep this crap on idle.

Re:Keep samzenpus on idle (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25236071)

Agreed. The video is funny and all, but keep it off the front page.

Re:Keep samzenpus on idle (1)

HappySmileMan (1088123) | more than 5 years ago | (#25236477)

That's why it's in "Entertainment", not "News"

Re:Keep samzenpus on idle (3, Insightful)

pushing-robot (1037830) | more than 5 years ago | (#25236743)

"Entertainment" is for real news regarding games, music, movies, books, and other entertainment-related subjects. Idle is for crap like this.

Re:Keep samzenpus on idle (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25244917)

Get rid of samzenpus and idle. They're both a waste of space. I came here for the "News for Nerds" None of idle is stuff for nerds and it certainly isn't news.

about as reliable as fox.

Re:Keep samzenpus on idle (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25242963)

I think you're giving too much credit to Fox by saying that. At least we know the Onion is ALWAYS fiction, with Fox we're never sure.....

Re:Keep samzenpus on idle (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25244011)

Forget idle, keep him in the rubber room they shouldn't have let him out of in the first place.

Hating on Jon Katz (*shudder*) long enough got rid of him, didn't it? Isn't there any way we can get this dickhead off the front page?

Uh... WTF? (5, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25236099)

If I wanted to read the Onion, I would go to to the Onion.

Re:Uh... WTF? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25236609)

seriously, what are they doing to my slashdot?

Re:Uh... WTF? (1)

darkmeridian (119044) | more than 5 years ago | (#25237105)

It is entirely possible that the Slashdot editor thought that this was a real newsclip. Isn't that sadder than if they thought that this was funny to post?

Re:Uh... WTF? (3, Insightful)

Cruciform (42896) | more than 5 years ago | (#25237291)

I've never found the Onion to be funny. I've known people who couldn't describe stories on there without practically breaking down in tears from laughing so hard.
But for me, it's never been more than an "Oh, that's cute" sort of reaction.

It's weird how humour can be so subjective.

Re:Uh... WTF? (1)

drsquare (530038) | more than 5 years ago | (#25238813)

The problem with the Onion is that the headline is the punchline, so there's no point actually reading the article.

The problem with Slashdot is that it's slowly turning into digg.

Re:Uh... WTF? (1)

plasmacutter (901737) | more than 5 years ago | (#25241643)

Onion has jumped the shark (-1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25236239)

I'd always enjoyed the Onion in print because they have a tradition of smart humor. But this is just idiotic. I'm not annoyed at the subject matter as much as the way they've chosen to execute this stunt. Those clips being played with translation, for anyone who understands Chinese, were composed with such bad taste that the Onion comes off as baffoons. Parody is fine, but when you put irrelevant (and just plain wrong) words in other people's mouths it becomes tasteless and misleading at best and libel at worst. Not funny at all.

Re:Onion has jumped the shark (3, Insightful)

Joe Snipe (224958) | more than 5 years ago | (#25236719)

They put irrelevant and wrong words in peoples mouths all of the time. Did you really think cheney said "bring it" before an explosive game of street rules basketball? The only difference was they used stock footage of Zhai Zhigang, the actual astronaut who walked in space and translated it to their own end. It was as much of a parody of the current state of newsreporting as it was a parody of Chinese government.
There was nothing far reaching or out of bounds about any of this. You seem to have said that you had no problenms with poking fun at things you don't like but are hurt and offended when someone pokes fun at things you identify with. What does that say about you?

Re:Onion has jumped the shark (2, Informative)

Joe Snipe (224958) | more than 5 years ago | (#25236781)

Oh, but I also agree this shouldn't be on /. Maybe idle./.

Re:Onion has jumped the shark (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25243677)

All I said was I expected the Onion to be funnier than this. The Onion has always been a trusty source of "Quality Time-Wasting" for me - just not this time. I know nothing of cheney or basketball so I don't know where you are going with your arguement. If you enjoyed the clip, good on you, at least they managed to entertain someone, even if it wasn't me. I was rather hoping someone would reveal that there is a hidden double entendre somewhere that I missed. If you find humor in comparing this with "the current state of newsreporting [sic]" and I don't, it apparently says you spend more time and energy scrutinizing "newsreporting" much more serious than I do. Did I miss the point somewhere that the Onion was actually *striving* to reach beyond some bound? You are welcome to read into my comment whatever you wish. It still doesn't make the story any funnier.

Re:Onion has jumped the shark (1)

Joe Snipe (224958) | more than 5 years ago | (#25249821)

I'm not attempting to argue about your sense of humour (or lack thereof), but rather I am arguing that your accusation of bad taste and misleading statements are incorrect. I have no desire to elucidate anyones sense of humour, ever.

Re:Onion has jumped the shark (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25250135)

Accusation??? I am honored and flattered that you feel my opinion is worth objecting to, but I didn't intend to pursue an argument in "correctness" in any way shape or form. Unless you intend to convey that it is incorrect of me to have a perspective that is contrary to yours. :-) I simply feel that in regards to language, there is a lost opportunity here for clever wordplay that honors the intelligence of the audience. If you choose to see the production as purely political satire - That is fine. But everyone has done communist China jokes, and frankly, this effort by the Onion just isn't very original or creative. Again, this is just an OPINION, and there is no intention to be correct or incorrect.

Lighten up, man. I thought this was hilarious. I love their ONN specials. So you're offended by them continuing to make fun of people. Big deal. Where you offended when their news site read "HOLY FUCKING SHIT America Under Attack" on 9/11? Probably. I don't care, this is grade A stuff.

What were the Chinese saying in those interviews? I hope I'm not missing part of the joke!

So let's list the problems here. * No submitter - so we have no one to blame. * Duplicate article - the launch was already well covered earlier in the week. * Offensive - oppressive communist governments = lulz for som, but not for me, apparently. This should be under Idle, since it's not really all that clever.

Not *really* funny (1)

Tomji (142759) | more than 5 years ago | (#25238081)

Funny is usually when there is some degree of truth behind. Cannot see any in this clip.
The China Space program is the pride of the nation and queues are as long as everywhere to sign up.
China has money in abundance (real money not debt!)... so making them look like a south park episode of the mexian NASA makes it look double stupid.

What? (2)

It's really too bad that there's no way to turn off these idle.slashdot posts.

Paracelcus (151056) | more than 5 years ago | (#25239169)

"Beating people to death is more cost effective" just like lowering a little girl into a tank full of leaches as a cost effective way to fatten them up!
It's true, I'm not kidding.

Most favored nation, an all day shower of nukes would be too good.

Go ahead, flame me! Communism is a plague, a disease, a raw sore on the Human race's ass!

Re:Funny as hell.. (1)

Max Littlemore (1001285) | more than 5 years ago | (#25241905)

That's right. Communism is a plague. Oh and which country's federal government is spending billions buying up bad debt? There's a piece of blatant socialism right there, whereas China is a capitalist country. It's only people too stupid to realise that the US is one of the poorest nations who don't seem to get that.

But I agree, you should keep on this rant and try and convince as many other Americans as possible you are right. Then maybe China will get pissed off and call in the debt.

I'd find it kind of funny telling my son that he has to eat all his vegetables because there are children starving in the US of A.

Idiot

What are you trying to do Slashdot? Shoot yourself in the foot? Worsen your reputation? Jump the shark? Get on Digg's turf? Here's some news, you don't jump from a niche to another, however close, cause in this case you'd alienate more than you would attract.
