Gen Com purchase offer rejected [livingdice.com]
Seems as if someone was trying to destabilize things.

That newer posting is two days old too. The story on the original letter was posted a week ago.

That's somewhat interesting. I wonder if this guy, who is posting these blogs is up to something shady.

Read the tagline on this website... News for Nerds and all that.

Go find something you are interested in.

Please don't feel the need to go around commenting on everything that bores you. Why would we care?

A low digit user id that is a troll...? Are the trolls now using cryogenic technology? Heaven forbid!

Gaming Convention for Sale (1)

9Nails (634052) | more than 5 years ago | (#25925649)

There, that might help...

Gen Con is a Gaming Convention held in North America and Europe. They host the events and bring in exhibitors. In some cases it's a chance for the public to meet people in the game industry.

I've never been to one of these. I tend to miss the dates when I'm interested and not have the money when I'm informed of the events.

wowza (-1, Troll)

Earlier today, I was talking to an old greybeard unix type. He was doing AI stuff at MIT in the 70s, knew Richard Stallman. Turns out, "Stallman" isn't his surname, it's a nickname. Seems he got busted by the campus police once fucking a girl in a bathroom.

advantages does this convention offer me, over say, a train, which I could also easily afford?

The real question is (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25913963)

Who the fuck is Gen Con?

Seriously, I'm a nerd and I've never even heard "Gen Con".

Soulskill, you fail.

Re:The real question is (3, Informative)

TheKidWho (705796) | more than 5 years ago | (#25914147)

Gen Con is a gaming convention, just a bit smaller than E3.

Re:The real question is (1)

Colin Walsh (1032) | more than 5 years ago | (#25915399)

Here, let me Google that for you [letmegoogl...foryou.com] .

Re:The real question is (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25916201)

The point is, the summary should have mentioned it. The author already knew what it was about and it would have prevented 500,000 people from searching "Gen Con" on Google.

You seem to have missed the part about Slashdot actually being a really big stick that nerds use to hit things.

I wonder how Gencon feels about your 500,000 nerds typing Gencon into a search engine scenario.

Chas (5144) | more than 5 years ago | (#25916187)

GenCon is a gaming convention held in Indianapolis. If it's a game, it's played at GenCon.

It the highest drawing (money-wise) convention in Indianapolis, pulling more than even the Indy500 crowd. This actually stunned the crap outta them a couple years back. Gamers and all that disposable income.....

Unlikely true if you include the TV income, which is an enormous majority of the profit in almost any televised sport.

Which the downtown tavern proprietors never see. BTW, GenCon is broadcast too. [youtube.com]

Re:The real question is (1)

Chas (5144) | more than 5 years ago | (#25922941)

No. I mean highest drawing money-wise for Indy itself. Sure, the Indy 500 makes more money off TV deals, but the city doesn't see most of that.

Chapter 11, duh! (2, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25914073)

When a company has filed a Chapter 11 they have to examine every offer to be bought out.

If GM files Chapter 11 and some idiot offers them $10 for the entire company, then GM has to treat it as an offer and consider it.

Re:Chapter 11, duh! (1)

Uzik2 (679490) | more than 5 years ago | (#25916111)

Instead of "gm has to consider it" shouldn't that read "The bankruptcy judge has to consider it"? I don't believe the bankrupt entity gets to pick and choose unless the judge allows it.

GenCon is card gamers life (4, Interesting)

MunchySnacks (1285686) | more than 5 years ago | (#25914323)

Coming from a local Indy resident this is huge news GenCon has been a part of my life for quite awhile now and all I can hope is that someone buys it who cares about D&D and CTG's. Most of my friends are very involved with this convention my best friend volunteers and was won second place last year in the final FMA tourney. All I can hope is that if there are buyers they will remember what GenCon is about and keep true to all the gamers that enjoy it so much.

Re:GenCon is card gamers life (3, Informative)

Harin_Teb (1005123) | more than 5 years ago | (#25915463)

I second this, and hope that however *does* buy it doesn't treat it the way WotC did when they owned it and give games made by other companies second class booths / rooms.

Also for the love of jeebus keep it in indy. Its not too far a drive from Mi for me. :-)

Gen Con is a traditional gaming convention (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#25914941)

not a video gaming convention. Grow a beard.

Re:Gen Con is a traditional gaming convention (1)

Chas (5144) | more than 5 years ago | (#25916227)

Yet computer gaming goes on there too.

One of the big sponsors of 2008's GenCon was Cryptic Studios who was hawking their upcoming Champions Online product.

Warhammer Online was also there as well.

Grow a thicker skin?

Re:Gen Con is a traditional gaming convention (1)

solios (53048) | more than 5 years ago | (#25917845)

Yeah, but those are computer games with tabletop roots. You don't see Eidos hawking Tomb Raider, do you?

Re:Gen Con is a traditional gaming convention (1)

Chas (5144) | more than 5 years ago | (#25922957)

Actually yes, I have. All sorts of games that didn't necessarily have their roots in tabletop variants have been hawked at GenCon too.

illegal? (1)

rpillala (583965) | more than 5 years ago | (#25916819)

I saw the "illegal" tag and have been waiting to see a post about why. Does it have something to do with ch. 11 reorganization?

Who is Gen Con? (1)

swordgeek (112599) | more than 5 years ago | (#25917019)

OK, my first thought was that the /. post didn't even hint at who/what GenCon is or does. Then I thought, "be fair--they wouldn't do it for SCO or any other company that is part of the culture. Go RTFA, and you'll find out."

Well, I RTFA, and it doesn't even hint at it. A paragraph on /. is one thing, but writing an entire article about a company being bought without even mentioning what the company does or did? Sad.
