Researchers Test Whether Sharks Enjoy Christmas Songs

samzenpus posted more than 5 years ago | from the what-now dept.

Music 142

Scientists plan to test whether sharks enjoy listening to Christmas pop songs, after US research showed fish could recognize melody. Chris Brown, senior marine biologist at the Loch Lomond aquarium, said seasonal music would be played through walkthrough underwater tunnels where they can be heard by dozens of nurse sharks, black-tip reef sharks, and ray species. Experts will then monitor the sharks' reactions to different songs. We'll play everything from Kim Wilde and Mel Smith's Rocking Around the Christmas Tree and Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade to Wham's Last Christmas. We may find they prefer something softer like White Christmas by Bing Crosby," Brown said. Thank you for answering this question science.

At this point, I think it's worth mentioning the following:

If men went around saying: "I don't know what I'd do without mine" when someone mentioned the word "penis," it seems likely to me that some woman somewhere would find something insulting to say in retort.

Therefore, this all sounds like fair play to me.

Re:I'm a girl on Slashdot (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26157199)

If you had one, maybe you wouldn't feel the need to be an asshole to a woman on an internet forum for no reason.

I was referring to the observation that generally, even women who are wealthy want to date men who make more money than they do. Look up the stats yourself if you do not believe me. This is legal prostitution in my opinion. It's not like rich men are ever lonely, even when they're obvious scumbags. Also, men don't generally have the option of being a "homemaker" -- men either have a job or they're a bum, there's a definite shortage of third options for men. So, someone saying that without a vagina you might need to get a job (as opposed to want to get a job) isn't totally without basis in reality.

Another thing. Apparently you're a woman and you read Slashdot. I like that. I wish more women had interests like this. If you've read much of Slashdot at all then you know that people say all sorts of shit here. It's the sort of place where people can take a joke or at least understand that plenty of people are going to say things they don't like. I think that makes Slashdot fucking great, myself. Please understand that the moment you talk about your vagina and how indispensable it is, you might not like the responses you get. I'm really quite surprised that there were so few responses, to tell you the truth. That does not make someone an asshole. You're offended about the response to what you said and don't seem to have given a second thought to whether someone was offended by your own remark (hell, some people are prudes like that). If they were, you'd tell them to get over it, right? What should I say to you now that you don't like my joke? I am trying to treat you like an equal, and part of that means applying the same standard to you that I would apply to me. Part of that also means giving and hoping to receive a certain amount of benefit of doubt. Does that fit your definition of being an "asshole to a woman on an internet forum"? If it does, why? Because I assumed that someone who makes a comment like that can take a joke? I wasn't actually trying to make you angry, you know.

To tell you the truth, I'm betting that you're probably one hell of a lot more sophisticated and humorous than our silly little argument would make either one of us appear to be. I really would like to see your reply to this, even if it's a negative one.

"Santa Jaws" is so (deservedly) obscure that it doesn't appear on YouTube nor are its lyrics available anywhere except here [blogspot.com] and only from memory, and only due to being unavailable anywhere else.

Yet, it appears to have finally had a purpose after all. :^p

More interesting question would be the effect of Christmas songs on humans. More specifically, whether the endless playing of them in every store starting from at least a month before Christmas causes people to buy more crap. You'd think it would cause the stores must have researched that kind of stuff, but then every person I know regards them as an annoyance. Personally, I would go out of my way to shop at a store that doesn't play them if I could only find one.

I would imagine that the sharks, like me, will go out of their way to avoid the Christmas music. There is one station where I live that switches to 24/7 Christmas music starting before Thanksgiving. I can't listen to it for a full 6 weeks.
Of course, I will also avoid Christmas parties with anyone but friends and family, and yes we have the token mid 40's slightly frumpy woman at work who likes to put up all kinds of decorations and try to get us to play "Dirty Santa".
Fortunately, our Christmas party was offsite this year, and I just stayed at the office and worked.

Re:What (1, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26156979)

Very wrong. Everyone who has been saying stuff such as "Waste of money" should just go back to reading their bibles.

How come it isn't important to research if the same kind of things affect the moods of animals that affect our moods? How can a point be made that it isn't exactly the kind of knowledge that progresses our understanding of the world around us?

In addition it has numerous practical uses. They range from calming animals in kennels, zoos, etc. to getting slightly more productive farms by just playing the right CDs at the barn to keeping some species from becoming extinct to helping pet owners.

For example, I have a parrot. One of the most common reasons that pet parrots die is out of stress if something wierd happens. If the owner changes, if they both move to another house, if the family gets another pet... The parrot might become too stressed and stop eating alltogether. This kind of problems are very difficult to deal with.

I also know from experience that what type of music I play affects his moods (he seems to like Tenacious D and Flight of the Concords but I can't anymore listen to heavy metal without headphones...). If I knew that there was certain kind of music proven to help him through stressful times, I could pay quite a much for the CD.

But why is this a waste of money? Oh right, christmas songs! Any other type of songs at any other time of year... No prob. But christmas songs so it MUST be stupid research and waste of all those... Hmm. This research really costs only the price of a few CDs and few weeks of payment for the assistant that spends part of his time examining the sharks. Hell, I could fund this research myself.

But nowadays I see two, three of these idle type stories hit the front page every day! Now this stupid shark thing, masking as a science story. Appropriately tagged 'idle' already.

Please editors: keep idle type stories in the idle section, not in other sections, so we can filter them out if we like. And only real science stories in the science section. It's what those sections are made for, right?

Oh, good God yes. When one out of twenty stories is of the Idle variety, a story which must either be clicked on to view or briefly skipped over on the index, then Slashdot is truly ruined. What person would want this monster now?

Really now, I just can't understand all the vitriol spewed over Idle. I honestly have found just a small amount of it musing, but its overall impact on Slashdot as a whole is minuscule. If you hate it so much, just ignore the damn thing! Or, stop being an AC and then you can filter it out of everything but the RSS feed.

As for the GP's point... silly as this is, I don't have a problem with it being outside of Idle. Before there was an Idle section, stories which were serious candidates for an Ignobel award would have been fair game on Slashdot. Why not now?

There is no reason that wifi over power lines should be federally banned as there is no proof that air guide signals impede the phase of electrical power signals, even 4 phase lines. It is known that wifi works on a QAM-8 orthaginal spacing while 4 phase always exhibits a rhomboid sine distribution. The twisted pair cross-current vs. serial overload buffer magnetisism is most overcome by employing a larger multi-linear, nor capacitance resistor in parallel with a Ombudsman-type ohm logger. It is true the fidelity of the upper octaves of any oboe solo is overcome by refractive copper tunings in the brass section, but this can be damped by wet rag dolls and the use of Criso oil as the valve lubricant. Further, songs in the key of G fail to pass the "spectrum de art" test since they are not composed in blue or aqua crayon. At the rate these researchers are going, dolphins will become the pray of off-tune, but well-meaning, carolers who believe in a "flat earth" with no harmonic resonances in the upper foundations of granite sub-articulates.

Everyone understand, now?

Nope, me neither.

Is this funded by tax payer money? due to separation of church and state, your favoritism towards Christianity in your study is illegal.

I didn't RTFA, but can you really measure enjoyment? I highly doubt they enjoy much but tearing into flesh and the smell of blood.

Some record label joining forces with evil and/or insane scientists for world domination? Sounds like the work of Dr. Evil, really.

Anyone know how I can get a job like that? I would love to come up with the most contrived non-sense & get paid for doing it. I've got one right now.

What they are going to do to these poor sharks is torture, like what they do in Guantanamo Bay! Don't be surprised if the sharks fight back and the next story will be about some eaten scientists. Pray that sharks don't decide to take it out on all the humans and start inventing lasers!

Seriously, I never thought it possible, but the universe has bent in such a way that the extreme insipid evil that are xmax carols inflicted on poor helpless sharks is funny. Really funny. Sad... but really funny!

Maybe we could find the actual sharks who have attacked humans and force them to listen to xmax music, ala "Clockwork Orange" to teach them a lesson. Let them free so that they will tell other sharks about the horrors.

Of course, then we will see sharks beaching themselves like dolphins just to get the stupid tunes out of their tiny little brains.

What they are really testing (1)

bembleton (589035) | more than 5 years ago | (#26160321)

They're testing Christmas Music as effective shark repellent. What shark in his right mind would willingly stick around to listen to We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

On the other hand, they may find that Jingle Bells sounds exactly like an injured seal.

Maybe they should test the sharks to see.... (1)
