A Robotic Bartender, and How To Build One

timothy posted more than 5 years ago | from the why-not-a-bender dept.

Robotics 66

Jamie Price writes with a nice tutorial on putting technology to use in the service of mankind, with one of his latest projects — BaR2D2. "BaR2D2 is a radio-controlled, mobile bar that features a motorized beer elevator, motorized ice/mixer drawer, six-bottle shot dispenser, and sound activated neon lighting. The robot is driveable so you can take the party on the road! It was created in my garage using standard hand/power tools and readily available parts and materials. Here is a video of it in action. To see the full how-to with tons of pictures, check out the build.

Who's going to be the first to tag this "Bender"?

His Lordship Obama? (-1, Offtopic)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26400777)

I don't know what the big deal is with Barack Obama. I mean everyone is praising the man and he gets man of the year for what? The man has not even started his Presidential term yet and we are all kissing his ass like he accomplished Middle East Peace and solved world wide poverty in 3 days. If anything I think Mr Obama winning should be attributed to the energy and drive of the American people. The voters are the ones who should get praised for electing the first African American President in the history of the nation.

Too often these days we seem to attribute grandeur and greatness to our elected officials even though we should be looking inwards towards ourselves. Without the will of the people, do you honestly believe any of the policies towards social equality or change would have happened throughout the history of the nation? Poiliticans move when the people light a fire under their asses and at no other time. Mr. President Elect Obama is no different and not that he will be taking his new role we need to keep the pressure on for him to carry out the positives he has stated he would accomplish. What we should not be doing is putting portraits of him up all over the place, and talking about the man like he is the second coming. Obama is not the King of the United States, he is our representative and he thus represents something greater than himself. We need to stop focusing on the person and focus more on what he will do and how he will represent the 300 million people in this country.

Democratic supporters have been very notorious in doing this (Although Religious Republicans of the last 8 years are equally guilty) since their political ideals seem to shift more towards a centralist Government in Washington. A lot of these guys who voted for Obama seem to want to go towards a point where the Federal Government has complete control over the average citizen. Since when did we surrender the power of self determination and submit ourselves to a bunch of rich guys in Washington? You cannot blame the Federal Government, we elected these guys in and you will get what you vote for. I think it is high time we forego these cheap bailouts of OUR tax dollars and these quick fix rebate checks. This is only free money to those who don't pay taxes and will further hurt us down the line.

Only his detractors call him things like "messiah" and "lordship" and they have become so shrill that people don't even listen. I didn't even read your spew.

I would like to say How terribly sorry I am to be so insensitive. If you have a Meth addictive Ferret I did not mean to offend you or offend the ferret by the above comparison.

Not Bender, but I remember a minor character from an episode of Futurama named "iZac".

I am amused, but the Bender Brewer has already beat this project to the punch.

No, it's just for you.

Code? (3, Insightful)

Mozk (844858) | more than 5 years ago | (#26400619)

And there is completely nothing about the programming.

Re:Code? (3, Informative)

Ellis D. Tripp (755736) | more than 5 years ago | (#26400755)

Probably because there ISN'T any programming required.

As far as I can see, this thing isn't really a robot, as it has no autonomous capability. It is just a large RC vehicle with a beer and liquor dispenser on top.

The only "programming" involved is setting up a bunch of commercial R/C equipment as directed in the manuals.

Re:Code? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26409177)

I wouldn't say that it isn't a Robot. The idea that a 'robot' has to be intelligent is a pop-culture thing that I never really agreed with. Even though it's remote controlled it does need some instruction sets since you wouldn't have the number of buttons needed for every motor, servo and solenoid on a commercial remote. My guess is that they are on a PLC or a Lego Mindstorm box but I haven't looked at anything but the first page yet.

If you're looking for something to supplement your bar with the possibility of programming, there's always Bar Monkey [barmonkey.net]...

Re:Code? (1)

emag (4640) | more than 5 years ago | (#26405259)

Is it sad that, even though my wife already approved of a bar monkey when we were looking at houses almost 2 years ago, I've yet to get around to building one?

Re:Code? (1)

sam0737 (648914) | more than 5 years ago | (#26401353)

Do you think there is code? I read the TFA, even the elevator and spin table were interlocked mechanically (i mean hardware switch), and the drivetrain is taken from 2nd hand wheelchair. The whole thing is controlled by RC.

Which means...all were done with old good hardware.

This reminds me of the system I want to build one of these days with all drink-dispensers hooked up to a voice-recognition system that parses commands:

"Computer! Make one martini, shaken not stirred! Engage!"

"Computer: tea: Earl Grey: hot."

I think Bender would say something like . . . (1)

PolygamousRanchKid (1290638) | more than 5 years ago | (#26400713)

. . . "imagine how much booze and cigars I could have bought with the money that was spent on building that robot!"

Although, I think that Bender's favorite drink is, "that, for which someone else has paid for!"

Re:This won't work (1)

drsquare (530038) | more than 5 years ago | (#26408629)

This may not have any use in Japan or Europe, but in America, just think about how much money you'd save on tips if this was implemented. The cost of drinking would be dramatically slashed.

Here's the deal (-1, Flamebait)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26400773)

I have some karma to burn, so here it goes. Slashdot maybe full of hot-shit coders that can afford the DTV switch, but the fact is that poor people are having a hard time switching. I think Obama was correct in delaying the switch. As for those Slashdoters who are going to slam me, just remember, you were poor once too. Don't take their damn TV away, that's the only thing some of them have.

Re:Here's the deal (0)

Re:Here's the deal (0)

Good thing the poor people have cable (with HBO) already.

This is the U.S. you are talking about. Do you really think they watch broadcast? The only ones still watching OTA is because they choose to.

Very nice design. (2, Informative)

Animats (122034) | more than 5 years ago | (#26400821)

That is a nice piece of design. People like it.

The MotoMan RoboBar [youtube.com] is much more impressive technology, from a big robotics manufacturer, but it tries to be cool and fails. MotoMan's original slogan was "We already make your car. Now let us make your drink".

Where is the AI? (3, Insightful)

rev_deaconballs (1071074) | more than 5 years ago | (#26400933)

This thing is all show and has no functionality. I am not sure how it is even called a robot. Sure it has mechanical parts but so does a car. Until you have an AI driver a car is just a car. If it needs to be remotely controlled than you need someone to stand 10 feet away instead of right next to it. As the video showed, it took way too long for one person to even get a drink. My guess is that people will use it once to say they used it then go to the real bar every other time.

Re:Where is the AI? (1)

waveclaw (43274) | more than 5 years ago | (#26406073)

It's as much a robot as a RC toy car.

However, take that awesome chassis and put it on a Basil [technovelgy.com] and you have a real robot bartender.

And not one that looks like a slow showpiece [youtube.com] for robotic arms and how not to display a face (on a low-grade industrial laptop screen.)

As the video showed, it took way too long for one person to even get a drink.

So give the drink elevators a bit more speed. The ice bin at the bottom is pretty much wasted space but then you'd need someplace for the AI anyway.

Do. You. Want. Some. More? (1, Funny)

And here come the lawyers... (1)

prisoner-of-enigma (535770) | more than 5 years ago | (#26401513)

I suspect it's going to take all of five seconds for someone at Lucasfilm, Ltd. to send a cease & desist on the use of the name and any possible resemblance to the intellectual property of George Lucas. There are three groups of lawyer-happy folks in the movie business that are well known for having itchy legal fingers. They are Disney (the worst by far), the MPAA (go see what they do to folks who use Oscar statue likenesses), and Lucasfilm. All of Hollywood is ready to sue anybody anytime, but these three stand out of a crowd.

How can the thing... (1)

FlyingGuy (989135) | more than 5 years ago | (#26403163)

properly muddle the mint in my Mojito? That takes human hands and a human eye to know when it is just right. And yes I do prefer my drink made by a lovely bar tender with a nice smile and even nicer breasts comfortably cradled in a low cut top. Animation is great for a lot of things, but this is not one of them. FAIL!

From the builder of BaR2D2 (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26403755)

Thanks for some of the compliments.

To add some detail - Nowhere along this journey did I want to make an autonomous bartender. The whole point was to make the ultimate party machine that I could take with me to parties/cons/tailgates. It was designed as mechanical art and was never meant to be AI. It is awesome at parties (see video) and the ladies LOVE BaR2 - note the hot dancing hula hoop girl at the end of the video.

BUT, for those who wish it had programming, take a look at the last step in the instructable...as we speak, the upgraded liquor system is being built and should be ready in the next month. It will use a mini laptop with bluetooth to beam drink orders from a drink database to BaR2D2. BaR2 will be able to mix those drinks.

I hope some of you can appreciate a nice piece of art that took a lot of time to make and people enjoy seeing. :)

I was thinking/hoping it was a mobile barmonkey... (1)

Tmack (593755) | more than 5 years ago | (#26404291)

No Bar Monkey [barmonkey.net] inside???

...with a little speech recognition software, it would be awesome! Wheel autonomously around a party, someone calls it over and tells it what they want, it mixes it for them right there and hands it to them, then moves on.

Re:I was thinking/hoping it was a mobile barmonkey (1)

ITEric (1392795) | more than 5 years ago | (#26405083)

If just anyone could have it mix a drink for them, some way to pay, and even tip (I'd tip a robot, wouldn't you?), would be good.

Liquor isn't cheap!

I'd add a Kung Fu program . . . (1)

PolygamousRanchKid (1290638) | more than 5 years ago | (#26406721)

it mixes it for them right there and hands it to them, then moves on.

Instead of just moving on, it could give a demo of "Drunken Monkey Form" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drunken_Monkey_Kung-Fu).

Encourage the guests to imitate the robot's moves, and stage competitions.

Now *that* would be cool.

Except that afterward, the location would probably be trashed, with all those fists smashing tables and chairs and stuff.
