Not only is this handily the worst Slashdot "story" I've ever seen, but it's spelled "Ouroboros".

Tryle (1159503) | more than 5 years ago | (#26469997)

I thought it was spelled Ohyouboreus. Compelling "story".

Re:Wow (1)

TheSovereign (1317091) | more than 5 years ago | (#26471087)

precisely what I was thinking, since when did Slashdot become a poor mans digg or reddit?

Not until you joined, oddly enough.

Re:Wow (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26470199)

Wikipedia claims it's ok to spell it this way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros [wikipedia.org] "tail-devouring snake", also spelled Ourorboros, Oroborus, Uroboros or Uroborus

Re:Wow (1)

Ecuador (740021) | more than 5 years ago | (#26472691)

Wikipedia has an entry even for "Nucular". Right now it says that "some recognize it because of its increased usage", give it a little and it will say it is a fine spelling. The fact is that the greek "omicron upsilon" is translated as either "ou" or "u", so while Uroboros is fine, "Oroborus" is an obvious misspelling that probably originated from the fact that the "us" is a common latin suffix, while this particular word seems to have been originated directly from Greek and not gone through the not uncommon Greek->Latin->English route. In any case we should not be promoting misspellings and getting them to be accepted in the end.
Now that said, most /. geeks do not care about linguistic analysis. So it is enough to say that "Ouroboros" is the official spelling of the Red Dwarf episode and that's it. Any other spelling is obviously rubbish.

Re:Wow (1)

Also spelled "idleispants"

Re:Wow (1)

pete-classic (75983) | more than 5 years ago | (#26478917)

I don't really get the idleispants thing. I mean, I think I understand the sentiment, but it is a very . . . non-US way of expressing it.

It just seems that nearly all the posts I see on Slashdot are in some approximation of US English. Are there a bunch of Britons hanging around Slashdot just tagging stories? If so, are they the assholes who insist on tagging every story, "story"?

Well, at least he managed to actually post it under the Idle section this time. Maybe soon somebody might fix the retardedly small comment text box in the Idle section. Oh wait, no; that would require competence.

Maybe, just maybe, this isn't actually a Slashdot story, but is the sick joke of a really, really good DNS hacker....

Nah. That's just wishful thinking.

VeNoM0619 (1058216) | more than 5 years ago | (#26471187)

Listen people! There is a very good reason this is on the /. main page, since this is a tech website, it is meant to spark conversation and be meaningful in a technology kind of way. Don't you see the reference to cold fusion?! That's why the 10 word story is such a short story, the picture alone has left us with many insights into the ability to create infinite energy.

I swear to Superman, I actually thought about the symbolic meaning of the ouroboros as it relates to the theory of the ultimate universal collapse (as opposed to infinite expansion or a cyclical growth and contraction) while this thread was loading.

Little did I know that I'd already moved beyond the scope of the article before I even had a chance not to read it.

I thought it was "Our Rob, or Ross" [wikipedia.org]

LISTER: I think that's why I spent most of my early life drifting, y'know? I didn't have anything to look to cos I didn't know who I was, where I came from. Just those two names they couldn't decide on calling me; 'Rob' or 'Ross'.

Most likely it would regurgitate itself before it has digested enough to mortally wound itself.

Re:Disolving (0)

I think snakes can't regurgitate

Re:Disolving (1)

You haven't seen one realize it isn't big enough to eat a whole baby zebra yet. Comes out all slimy.

The more interesting version is two (or more) snakes eating each other. When do they decide to give up, or do they? Will the one who doesn't die first stop before he engulfs the first's head?

You aren't Digg. Stop trying to be. You are better than that. Slashdot does not need colour-coded, user-rated stories that you 'digg up' and 'bury' and, above all, does not need single image 'stories' for people to LOL over. Have some dignity.

Stop taking yourself and the site so fucking seriously. Slashdot has repeatedly proved it should not be taken seriously with the inane and immature posts that regularly flood threads. Like the death of Majel Roddenberry [slashdot.org] for instance, where there was a flood of inappropriare posts. This is the respectable, serious, dignified Website you were talking about?

Lighten up. This section is called "Idle" and not on the main page for a reason.

Typical nerd, no personality, no sense of humor, thinks he is oh so important. Go play with Linux or something, Mr. Important.

Another "story" that's as lame as this and you're going on my ignore list. I haven't put an author on my /. ignore list since Jon Katz (although Zonk has come close a few times).

The only reason I haven't done it already is that your shotgun approach to posting random stories means that sometimes you post interesting ones, too, but that will be an acceptable loss if that's what I have to do to avoid crap like this.
