G.I. Joe Game On the Way

Soulskill posted more than 5 years ago | from the evidently-we-need-to-fight-the-other-half-of-the-battle dept.

Games 37

Electronic Arts has revealed that they are developing a G.I. Joe video game that will be launched alongside the G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra movie later this year. According to the announcement, the game "picks up where the live-action movie leaves off, allowing players to re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line." The game is planned for the PS2, PS3, PSP, mobile devices, Xbox 360, Wii, and DS. EA confirmed that there would be a co-op mode, but it's unknown whether there will be an online component.

EA and GI Joe? (0)

Ok. I can assure you I will not even think about getting the game after reading the first sentence of the summary. GI Joe and EA in the same sentence = destined to fail.

True to the cartoon series, the game will equip players with M-16s that fire lasers color-coded by which side the player is fighting for. No more running around scrounging for ammo, as players will start with an infinite supply. EA and Hasbro have also co-developed a unique auto-aim function, which guarantees that you'll always miss human targets, and their new patented Insta-Bail System ensures crew survival during tank and air battles.

Rated E for everyone!

Cobra? (1)

I loved the old U.S. military GI Joe. Why do the make "Cobra" GI Joes when the other ones actually existed.

Re:Cobra? (2, Insightful)

Jimmy King (828214) | more than 5 years ago | (#26842227)

The cartoon GI Joe is what is remembered by most people in the age bracket they are targetting. We grew up watching that cartoon. Plus, a movie and/or video game about the older GI Joe would just be "Generic War Movie". It might be good, but as far as I know, there's nothing that really makes it GI Joe since there were only a few characters and all pretty generic.

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#26843073)

Why do the make "Cobra" GI Joes when the other ones actually existed.

Because some other countries might take it the wrong way (for some unknown reason) if they started making the "enemies" Japanese or Vietnamese or Middle Eastern Insurgentese. It's much easier to just make an unidentifiable sinister force as the "enemy". (Could you really not figure this out on your own?)

digitalgiblet (530309) | more than 5 years ago | (#26844415)

Anybody remember "Bulletman"? "Bulletman, Bulletman, the HUMAN bullet."

One of the craziest GI Joe characters ever. No real link to the rest of the characters. Late in the run of the original toys. Before the Joes shrank and got more back story...

Greatest moments from the action figure line? (2, Funny)

internerdj (1319281) | more than 5 years ago | (#26841973)

What were those?
At least it won't be the worst moments from the action figure line, like Cobra Commander being eaten by the neighbors dog, or loosing my favorite figure in my friend's massive sandbox, or accidentally dropping weapons down the vent in my bedroom...

PS2 _and_ PS3? (1)

Golddess (1361003) | more than 5 years ago | (#26846897)

The game is planned for the PS2, PS3, PSP, mobile devices, Xbox 360, Wii, and DS.

I'm sure this isn't the first game with a PS2 AND a PS3 release (thought it is the first one I've noticed), but it seems like it says something when, in addition to all the current gen systems, a company also releases a game to a single last gen system. I just wish I knew what.

It says 'we like money. There are more PS2s out there than there are PS3s and Xbox360s combined, and we'd be idiots to leave money on the table.'

Re:PS2 _and_ PS3? (1)

CronoCloud (590650) | more than 5 years ago | (#26852653)

but it seems like it says something when, in addition to all the current gen systems, a company also releases a game to a single last gen system. I just wish I knew what.

It says, "We like piles of money." Consider the HUGE PS2 install base and all those nostalgic family/casual gamers that still game on PS2's that would buy a GI-Joe Vs. Cobra game.

And now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Yo Joe!

Make up your mind... (1)

picks up where the live-action movie leaves off, allowing players to re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film

Make up your mind, does it pick up after the movie, or is it set during the movie?
