Slashdot Launches User Achievements

CmdrTaco posted about 5 years ago | from the can't-believe-it-took-so-long dept.

Slashdot.org 1582

In a concerted effort to compete with more popular MMOs like World of Warcraft, we've decided to add an Achievement system to Slashdot. We've retroactively granted around 900,000 achievements to our logged in users. You can view them from your user page, or you can see my list if you're curious what a REAL achiever looks like. Many achievements have been sprinkled throughout the system and are awaiting discovery by dedicated Slashdot users, but a starter list of achievements is in the FAQ. I'll toss you one freebie: you can register your wow main for points if you're that kind of person. Now go forth and achieve!

Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (5, Interesting)

eldavojohn (898314) | about 5 years ago | (#27415053)

I (and many many others) have an achievement [slashdot.org] called "The Maker" ... what does that mean? It's not listed in the FAQ.

Also, how are you computing the total number of Achievements? If you add up my achievements (and if I add the powers of two I get closer) but it doesn't come out to be the number you posted.

Also, if I have CmdrTaco's attention, why not leave this up? You've written the code for it and although it will certainly tax your database (default awards were handed out on different days) to update these values for everyone, why not leave it in place? Are you afraid this would increase karma whoring (it's in powers of 2 anyways) or produce negative effects?

For those of you without Warcraft characters, you add it to your user page and then it appears on the right of your user page as a hyper link to the armory (check out my user page). Then you get a +1 achievement with Level 80 (or I guess whatever level your main is) on your Achievements page.

My guess is its the Giant Sandworm from Arrakis "Shai Halud"

BTW I don't play WoW you insensitive clod!

Since its the first day of the fourth month please think of the poor children in Fargo who are unable to celebrate this 'holiday' with their teachers. (schools are closed due to the flood)

Remember Gmail? (5, Informative)

From the FAQ [slashdot.org]:

The achievements system was launched on April fools day of 2009 in order to allow for certain joke achievements, but the system itself is a real one. This allows Slashdot users to track accomplishments and milestones (and stroke the epeen, which is what it's all about anyway) as they use the site.

Re:Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (1)

El_Muerte_TDS (592157) | about 5 years ago | (#27415245)

I wonder if there is also an achievement for getting all achievements.

Re:Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (5, Informative)

bFusion (1433853) | about 5 years ago | (#27415459)

But then you'd never get it because the achievement for getting all the achievements is part of the requirement for getting the achievement!

*head explodes*

I (and many many others) have an achievement [slashdot.org] called "The Maker" ... what does that mean? It's not listed in the FAQ.

I don't have that, so it's something you did that I didn't. Does that help?

You also got "The Contradictor". Any idea how you got that? And any idea how I got "The Tagger", considering I don't even know how to tag an article (I think you have to be a paid subscriber or something, which I'm not).

I'm beating you on the number of consecutive days of Slashdot reading. Wait, should I be proud of that?

Re:Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (1)

ben0207 (845105) | about 5 years ago | (#27415391)

The Contradictor is by tagging something like !funny when it's already tagged funny.

I've got both the tagger and the contra, despite the fact that I have slashdot viewed as basically as possible (*short of using Links) and there fore never see tags.

Re:Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (1)

KillerBob (217953) | about 5 years ago | (#27415433)

I'm guessing "The Contradictor" is for clicking that little exclamation point on somebody else's tag. Say somebody posted a tag "correlationiscausation" and you clicked the bang to make it "!correlationiscausation". :)

Re:Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (1)

morgan_greywolf (835522) | about 5 years ago | (#27415393)

I'm guessing "The Maker" either has to do with your the number of 1st posts, or, like the WoW thing, you get it if you fill out your IM details.

Re:Unexplained Achievement "The Maker"? (1)

Jade E. 2 (313290) | about 5 years ago | (#27415461)

From checking out a handful of users, it looks to me like 'The Maker' is for subscribing.

Very funny... (2, Insightful)

Tony Hoyle (11698) | about 5 years ago | (#27415063)

Since slashdot is about 14 hours late with the april fools, will we expect this for another 24 hours, well into April 2nd?

Re:Very funny... (5, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#27415111)

What do you mean? Its April 1st in America so it has to be April 1st everywhere! I mean jeez, America is like, the time standard, get an education, man!

Ah, you talk like a fag, and your shit's all retarded. What I'd do, is just like... like... you know, spell it "edumacation".

Re:Very funny... (1)

elrous0 (869638) | about 5 years ago | (#27415153)

Depends on where on the globe you're at, doesn't it? On the U.S. west coast, it's only 6:30 a.m. on April 1st.

Re:Very funny... (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#27415369)

Given that this is Slashdot and all, shouldn't they just use UTC?

Re:Very funny... (3, Funny)

Rob Kaper (5960) | about 5 years ago | (#27415413)

No, it doesn't depend on where you are, at the moment of writing it's 14:51 UTC. Everywhere.

Except, they didn't just throw a static "haha, gotcha" page up... Slashdot really has implemented this system.

They might not leave it up after today, but I don't know if you can call an actual, working system of award-tallying a proper "April Fools" hoax...

I love April.

A good april fools is less obvious

Re:Come on (1)

Churla (936633) | about 5 years ago | (#27415167)

It depends...
Is the April fools joke the achievement system.
Or is the April fools joke that this might be a real feature and not go away on April 2nd?

Re:Come on (1)

glavenoid (636808) | about 5 years ago | (#27415315)

I sure hope to hell this thing sticks around! Good ol /. was getting a little bit stale.
Actually, I hadn't logged in for a few months, and thought the new, insane interface in general was the gag.

Re:Come on (1)

TheRaven64 (641858) | about 5 years ago | (#27415227)

They've certainly gone to a respectable amount of effort with this one. I was expecting Taco's achievements page to be static HTML, but it seems we all get them.

I was surprised by that, too. I'm trying to decide how far back they went in the database to come up with the numbers.

Does this mean we've stopped doing the sack races? (4, Funny)

elrous0 (869638) | about 5 years ago | (#27415087)

Because I always thought those were the best way to compete on /. Sure, the Thunderdomes were entertaining--but the second place trophy in those REALLY sucked. And the pissing contests...well, those just smelled bad and created a mess.

I'm....stumped... (1)

MistrBlank (1183469) | about 5 years ago | (#27415101)

Ok, so it's an April Fools Joke.... but damn it's well implemented.

They shouldn't restrict the statement to World of Warcraft though since WoW was just following the XBox achievement model.

Thelasko (1196535) | about 5 years ago | (#27415265)

Then how come I've gotten about 10 "page load error" messages this morning?

Daniel_Staal (609844) | about 5 years ago | (#27415321)

I figure the server was Slashdotted.

Re:I'm....stumped... (1)

Leafheart (1120885) | about 5 years ago | (#27415285)

You know the FAQ says it will be real. I bet that is part of the joke, but yes, it was well implemented. If it is not indeed April's Fool, and the system become real (we will see it tomorrow), this would have been as good as GMail.

So ... (0)

Sonic McTails (700139) | about 5 years ago | (#27415105)

Slashdot is now like my Xbox 360?

All we need is an AJAX box that blips and says "Achievement Unlocked - 5G The Comedian" and the transformation will be complete ...

This is a violation of my privacy. (5, Funny)

Zexarious (691024) | about 5 years ago | (#27415113)

I do not like this feature or the fact that I can not turn it off. Especially the 'read slashdot for [x] consecutive days' part. This is an encroachment of my privacy, where is it going to stop? Are you going to list the dates and times I have read slashdot, and what stories? There goes my job. Kind of surprising and shocking, that slashdot would be the one to sell my privacy down the river like this... And not even to the lowest bidder.. JUST DID IT, FOR NO REASON AT ALL.

The real question here is... (1)

Churla (936633) | about 5 years ago | (#27415135)

The number of users here who would really want this feature.

Although I'm curious as to what "comedian" is. They obviously need to add in better descriptions and tooltips ;)

+5 Troll (2, Interesting)

leromarinvit (1462031) | about 5 years ago | (#27415137)

There's his first -1 Troll mod. Now underrate him, boys.

Oh good god... (1)

Brazilian Geek (25299) | about 5 years ago | (#27415183)

I never understood achievements in games, they seem to me like a cheap way to add replayability, and now it's come to Slashdot.

What does replayability (or whatever else achievements are meant to give) mean for a site that's "news for nerds" and random microsoft bashing?

Re:Oh good god... (1)

DragonTHC (208439) | about 5 years ago | (#27415231)

It's not replayability, it's bragging rights. Always has been.

Re:Oh good god... (4, Funny)

Shining Celebi (853093) | about 5 years ago | (#27415385)

It's not replayability, it's bragging rights. Always has been.

Exactly. For example, those less-than-six digiters now get in achievements to rub it in even more, as if the number accompanying their every post wasn't enough. :(

One day, I'll have a one-digit user ID. You all just wait.

Re:Oh good god... (1)

illeism (953119) | about 5 years ago | (#27415283)

I never understood achievements in games

Achievements = busy work to keep bored players playing longer - just like daily quests did - and just like the next thing they dream up...

The April Fool (1)

plus_M (1188595) | about 5 years ago | (#27415205)

Don't mind me, just posting for the achievement ;)

Re:The April Fool (3, Interesting)

friedegg (96310) | about 5 years ago | (#27415471)

Now we just need little icons representing each of our achievements next to our names.

When did this happen? (1)

trongey (21550) | about 5 years ago | (#27415223)

I didn't realize that WoW had overtaken Slashdot.
I mean, like, when is the last time you heard about a website melting down because it was WoWed?

I like it (1)

mbenzi (410594) | about 5 years ago | (#27415253)

Whether this is permanent or not, (FAQ says it is, but hard to believe anything today) the data used to calculate my achievements appears to be valid. I think it is a funny, silly addition. Ole'

Dear slashdot (-1, Troll)

Obliterous (466068) | about 5 years ago | (#27415297)

Thanks for adding to the noise on this most annoying of days.

Yes, I know it's traditional, but with every single f'ing site doing it, it gets annoying very quickly.

Grinding reputation (2, Interesting)

dmleach (917181) | about 5 years ago | (#27415319)

How do you grind reputation with CmdrTaco anyway? And what are the faction rewards, Slashdot tabards?

Seriously...? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#27415365)

Wow. I know this is an April Fools' Day joke, but I wonder if it will stick around. (It'd be funny.)

ARG? (1)

AceJohnny (253840) | about 5 years ago | (#27415367)

I never did take Slashdot too seriously, but I guess this feature brings my favorite time-waster fully into Alternate Reality Game territory.

Huh, I wonder what it takes to get the slashdot Amulet of Yendor...

Oh for fucks sake. (1)

wiredog (43288) | about 5 years ago | (#27415383)

I hope this is an April Fools thingy. Otherwise it's just the Return of the Son of Karma Points.

And I thought it couldn't get any worse... (1)

For those of us who read slashdot for a long time before registering...alas.

Any others?

Not the worst idea ever (4, Insightful)

squoozer (730327) | about 5 years ago | (#27415409)

This isn't the worst idea I've ever come across but I can't help feeling it's walking down the idle route. I like achievements in games I'm not really sure they fit into a news discussion site. Still there's a good chance they won't be around tomorrow anyway.

Bizarre (1)

DarkSarin (651985) | about 5 years ago | (#27415429)

I are confused. So /. is now an MMO? It's like the silly game 'Achievement Unlocked' a meta game on various flash-game aggregator sites like Kongregate. Bizarre.

Now what? I don't even know what to do.

Days in a row... (1)

Temkin (112574) | about 5 years ago | (#27415447)

I read 2^4 days in a row. I knew there was a reason I logged out... I'd have made 2^7 easy...
