Guitar Hero 5 To Allow Duplicate Instruments, Easy Switching

Soulskill posted more than 5 years ago | from the let-the-drum-battles-ensue dept.

Music 43

Activision confirmed the existence of Guitar Hero 5 last week, and now they've released details about some of the game's new features. Quoting 1Up: "... the new Party Play mode allows players to swap instruments and difficulties on the fly — even in the middle of a performance. You'll also be able to play Guitar Hero 5 with any combination of instruments, be it four drum kits, two microphones and two guitars, or any other possible configuration of four players." They also listed a few of the songs, which include "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan and "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. Meanwhile, their music-game rival Harmonix has revealed the full set list for Rock Band Unplugged, coming out early next month for the PSP.

I've never played it so I'm probably unaware of the appeal. But why not just, you know, learn to play an actual guitar? Seems like that will be satisfying long after the game gets boring.

But why not just, you know, learn to play an actual guitar?

Because Guitar Hero is a game, which people play for fun.

Playing a real guitar requires years of hard work and dedication. That'll be a smash at parties.

Besides, one controller for RL Guitar costs more than all of Rockband.

Tpl2000 (1174767) | more than 5 years ago | (#27975689)

Real guitar IS a smash at parties--when done properly. That's actually a pretty decent reason to play guitar, believe it or not. And arguably, real guitar is much more fun. For the record...there are people who play guitar hero just as religiously as many play real guitar. Why not choose the one that's actually..y'know...profitable, portable, real, entertaining to those that are watching?

digitig (1056110) | more than 5 years ago | (#27975899)

I play real guitar and Guitar Hero. They're both fun, but in very different ways, so it's a false comparison. At parties, a particular strength of Guitar Hero over a real guitar is that you can bring in those people who didn't spend years rehearsing for your party.

Re:can someone explain guitar hero? (1)

MukiMuki (692124) | more than 5 years ago | (#27977253)

You have a really funny idea of the term "profitable". If you don't have a passion to play a real guitar, its worthwhileness as an investment is nil.

Take the amount of time it would take to make it job-worthy (e.g. capable of playing gigs either solo or in a band), take into account how much you'd reasonably expect to make (how common are people who play at bars vs. people with record contracts vs. people with record contracts that actually succeed?), and then compare that to training in any serious field (say, learning how to access a variety of database servers via Java, C++, ASP.net, PHP, VB, etc., or how to manage and administrate a server). Yes, music can make you millions, but so can selling a software company or film scripts.

I think I'll stick to my plastic guitar, and spend the other dozens of hours learning useful shit.

Tpl2000 (1174767) | more than 5 years ago | (#27978027)

Real guitar CAN be profitable in other ways, you know. A prime example would be a guitar teacher--if you're good enough, you can charge $100+ per lesson. I wasn't really speaking in terms of bands as big as RHCP, etc.

Leave the damned guitar at home. (2, Insightful)

twidarkling (1537077) | more than 5 years ago | (#27978949)

And yet again, the number of people who can play well enough to be teachers is much smaller than the pool of total players. And it still takes a lot of dedication to be good enough to teach guitar. Further more, people who just randomly bring their guitars to parties are FUCKING ANNOYING. You know why? If they weren't ask to, there's been no accommodations made for them, and they expect everyone else to bend over for them. If there's music playing, that needs to be turned down/off. They need relative quiet for tuning, then they want space to play in, and if not everyone wants to listen, you're still considered a rude asshole by the player if you don't hush up. And in the end, you're still just playing for yourself since no one else can play, and what you play is ultimately up to you and what you know.

With Guitar Hero, you can have multiple people playing, you're limited by the play list, not any one person's knowledge, everyone else can still carry on with what they want to do, people can swap in and out. Overall, it's a much more involving and social experience, and this looks like it will take it even further. So don't be a fan of GH if you want, no skin off my nose, but take your bullshit "Learn a real guitar instead" drek elsewhere.

Don't let it be the center of attention at your "parties". Not all guitar players are that way. If someone brings a guitar and wants to play, let them but let them know that this is your party and if people don't want to listen or turn down the music or whatever, then oh well. Most guitar players that I know like to play whether people are paying attention or not.

I'm not bashing GH. I'm just saying give the musician a break. It's hard enough to do what we do without the help of assholes.

Where? I mean maybe piano and guitar teachers are different, but I take high level lessons from a woman with multiple degrees in music, multiple Master's degrees in music, including piano performance and piano pedagogy from that little known music backwater, Juilliard, who performs with the Seattle Opera and Seattle Symphony amongst many others, and she charges $52/hour.

It's easier to pretend to play a dumb looking plastic guitar than to learn how to play a real one.

Actually, I can play drums incredibly well (30 years experience), and I'm pretty decent at bass, too. Despite that, I find playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero to be fun. It's a game. It's a totally different experience.

To be fair to Guitar Hero: Actually, this is some stuff that Rock Band doesn't have. I've wished before that Rock Band let you do dual vocalists.

To be fair to Rock Band: Everything? Well for starters, since they've explicitly said you can play GHWT DLC in GH5, I'm taking that to mean you still can't export GHWT songs to GH5, like RB1 did for RB2.

- John Cage: 4'33"
- Lou Reed: Metal Machine Music #3
- Napalm Death: You Suffer
- Billie Holiday: Gloomy Sunday.

True story: My computer randomly picks a song out of my music library to play as my alarm clock in the morning.

I was late for work the day it picked John Cage's 4'33" [wikipedia.org]

(I eventually came to hate most of my music library as a result of this mechanism, and have now relegated the script to limit its selections to a playlist of songs I don't particularly like (and don't also happen to consist only of 4 and a half minutes of silence)

Re:Led Zeppelin said they weren't signing up, but. (1)

moosesocks (264553) | more than 5 years ago | (#27977309)

Other options:

- Anything by Sunn O)))) [youtube.com]
- Saint of the Pit [youtube.com] by Diamanda Galas
- Any song without guitars (or traditional instruments for that matter. La lettre d'explication [youtube.com] by Yann Tiersen comes to mind).

On a more serious note, I'd love to see some Math/Post-rock type stuff on Guitar Hero. Stuff by Mogwai [youtube.com] , Radiohead, Sigur Ros [youtube.com] , or 65daysofstatic [youtube.com] would be fun and challenging. It'd be even cooler if you managed to work something like Fuck Buttons [youtube.com] into the guitar hero controller scheme.

(If the developers are particularly evil, they'll integrate Rock Band's vocal functions into the Sigur Ros tracks)

I think this is honestly the first time I've seen someone else other than my friend who mentioned something off of the Division Bell. All other times I've read or heard someone talking about Pink Floyd, they only bring up the staple "Comfortably Numb" or "Hey You" from off The Wall, and DSotM in general. I've rarily come across any appreciation for their other albums, especially the Gilmour-era (Obscured by Clouds and Meddle is brilliant, but I personally hold Division Bell close). What a great way to go OT and to dust off the soap-box temporarily.

Please look at the "Wii" portion of that table. And then note the title of the GP post is "Please think of the Wiildren!"

Incidentally, the chart is still wrong, in that you can use GH / GH:WT instruments in Rock Band. The other way around (Rock Band in GH:WT) is a no-go however.

Well, Rock Band 2 I should have said. Rock Band 1 the chart is probably accurate; I don't have the game for Wii.

A perfect World (1)

Peteyo311 (1555249) | more than 5 years ago | (#27977885)

Wouldn't it be nice in a perfect world for the makers of Rock Band and Guitar Hero to get over their differences and make one game that would have the best Set List?; of course there would not be any competition in the Market so its doubtful that new improvements would happen to fast.

Re:A perfect World (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#27977927)

Harmonix made both Rock Band and Guitar Hero. After 2 they sold the rights to have a fat wallet to start on Rock Band, their real dream. In a perfect world people stop buying GH so RB can stop fighting for licenses against a dramatically inferior title.

Is it me... (1)

Xest (935314) | more than 5 years ago | (#27980341)

Or do most of the newer Guitar Hero releases basically just add features that really should've just been in a single release in the first place?

When most companies design a game, they create a list of features and implement them into the game and release it. The Guitar Hero guys seem to make the same list, but make a whole new game for each feature.

I love Guitar Hero, but unlike most games I wont buy every version, I bought Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band but nothing since then, it just seems to be getting a little silly - a lot like EA with it's sports games that are really little different from version to version.

Still, it's a cash cow I guess so it's hard to blame them for it if people continue to buy it - the same can be said for EA's sports games I suppose!

Doesn't compare (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#27987443)

Real life has had these features for as long as I can remember.

Worst 'game' ever.
