Rockstar Announces New DLC For GTA IV

Soulskill posted more than 5 years ago | from the stay-classy-rockstar dept.

XBox (Games) 43

viyh sends word that new downloadable content will be coming to Grand Theft Auto IV this fall, called The Ballad of Gay Tony. They also announced that this bit of DLC, as well as the previous pack, The Lost and Damned, will be released together on a compilation disc later this year. The interesting part is that players won't need to buy the original game to play the two expansions. Rockstar's Sam Houser said, "This episode's focus on high-end night life contrasts with the biker gangs portrayed in The Lost and Damned, whilst giving us a lot of new gameplay possibilities." The press release describes the plot thus: "As Luis Lopez, part-time hoodlum and full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka 'Gay Tony'), players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price."

but what about those of us on the PC or PS3? No love? Ever?

No love, not yet anyway. Microsoft paid heavily ($50 million?) for DLC exclusivity on the xbox; doubt they're going to let it out onto other platforms in the foreseeable future.

Who needs it? Was I the only person greatly disappointed by GTA IV? Compared to the previous GTA games on the PS2, there was nothing to keep me playing after the story. In my opinion, more story wouldn't bring players back to the game as much as more interesting multi-player modes, car mods, and maybe some sort of turf wars or some other reoccurring event in single player.

I like driving really fast and destroying my car. That amuses me for hours and hours. And no, I'm not 12 years old.

I don't know.... As a PS3 owner myself, I found I spent more time playing GTA4 on it than most of the other titles I purchased for it. Even though I think the GTA series could do a lot of things to be better than it is, the graphics improvements in 4 really brought something to the series. (I know graphics are generally just "eye candy" and don't make a game "more fun" ... but I think they're a big deal in a game that relies on you exploring a 3D virtual world. GTA has always been the kind of game where you spend a lot of time just roaming around and discovering things. The cooler all the stuff looks, the more rewarding the experience is.)

The biggest disappointment I've always had in the GTA games is the relative lack of sensible AI in them. The game could get a lot more interesting if you could do things like forcing shop-keepers to hand over money in their registers, instead of only having the option to buy items from them. (Even in the fast food places in the game, if you point a gun at them, they usually put their hands up in the air and scream, but it serves no purpose. You can't take one of them hostage, or ask them to go get you money out of their safe, or .....) And no matter how many times you car-jack an ambulance (or attack paramedics trying to help someone else you just ran over), they don't ever seem to treat you differently. It's the same old routine where doing X amount of violence causes another "star" on the wanted level. It'd be interesting if ambulance drivers started seeing you coming and tried to run YOU over or ganged up on you in back-alleys or something, after a while.

All the way around, they could make the game a lot less "linear" ... As it is, you can roam all over and do all sorts of things, but all of it affects nothing in the main storyline they want you to follow. I'd like to see the story base itself around all the random stuff you do in the game. (Run over a whole lot of people on sidewalks? Suddenly, you're known as the "sidewalk mower" ... and they start using you for missions where that skill comes in handy.)

You could do this in GTA: Vice City.

It was awesome.

I really miss the humor of the older titles. There was nothing like hijacking an airplane that was already playing "ain't nuttin but a g thang" only to nose dive it into a group of elvis impersonators and jump out at the last second with a rocket launcher. "maybe gun control woulda been a good thing huh?". The new one is slightly too realistic for my tastes. When I first started playing it, going on urban rampages even felt a little bit fucked up and wrong since people would limp away and beg for their lives. Also there are no airplanes and flamethrowers. I love how silly and expansive GTA SA was.

The Lost and Damned added new multiplayer modes. Perhaps this update will too.

Meaning, you can get your balls rocked by GTA if you live in the U.S. and are under eighteen!

(Canadians nearing eighteen are already sneaking into titty bars...)

Judging from your username, I'm guessing that is going to midnight mass in the OC?

(PS, yes, I know it annoys people from the OC to call it that)

Judging from your average Halo chatter, XBOX users are pretty obsessed with homosexuals. They're ALWAYS talking about the ones on the other team. Maybe Rockstar figured that playstation and PC users didn't care as much about Gay Tony.

Rockstar finally came out of the closet, just in time to entertain Tony and all the playas that play this playa.

I digress, if this is suposdly high end nightlife maby they could put in some more interesting cars, like a Lotus or a Bugatii Varion or the like.
More high ranged guns like an AA-12, FNF2000 or P90 would be enjoyable.

New DLC, same themes (4, Insightful)

interkin3tic (1469267) | more than 5 years ago | (#28120101)

players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price

That sounds like a description for GTA4 and the first DLC pack. In fact, rockstar has hit me over the head with that theme in every GTA game since they went 3D, and the opening to one of the 2D ones on the PS1. Every single one, you get double crossed by others, and you double cross others. GTA4 had four separate ones that I can remember, and that's not including the first DLC.

You know what would be a really shocking twist? If rockstar made it through an entire GTA -without- a "Surprise! That guy that you thought was your friend is actually a bad guy!" They're the M. Night Shyamalan of videogames.

Fortunately, it's fun regardless of how monotonous that theme gets. The first DLC was surprisingly better than the original in plot, characters, and missions.

The first DLC was surprisingly better than the original in plot, characters, and missions.

First two, fine, but the missions in every GTA game ever have always sucked.

Re:New DLC, same themes (1)

Xtravar (725372) | more than 5 years ago | (#28122535)

May I suggest Saints Row 2? It mixes things up from the drab direction GTA has been going. GTA4 and the DLC so far have felt like work to me... I played them to be done with them. Heck, it isn't even fun to just mess around in GTA4 because the cops are so touchy and persistent, and the cars drive all serious-like.

Re:New DLC, same themes (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#28125547)

Wow, GTA is too hard for you? Back to kindergarten controls for you I guess. Do they need to put bumpers on the cars for you so you don't kill yourself when you crash into things?

Re:New DLC, same themes (1)

Xtravar (725372) | more than 5 years ago | (#28126361)

Troll, but warrants response. I beat GTA4 just fine, thanks. The problem is that you can't just mess around and have a lot of fun without ending up dead or arrested immediately. In previous GTA games, this made up the majority of the game play.

Re:New DLC, same themes (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#28122851)

Yeah, expect the final DLC to include:

Roman: You should have seen this coming, cousin!
Niko: <kirk>Rooooomaaaaaaannnnnnnn!</kirk>

FTFS: "full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka 'Gay Tony')"

I will assume that he didn't get this name for being a jolly happy guy...

I dunno who'll cry louder: Censor happy stick-in-ass religious types or wannabe-gangster playing the GTA series for its "I'm so tough and dangerous... if only in pixels" image.

The partner in crime of a gay night club chief... can you imagine that and NOT grin?

Not so sure about that - if you're a stick-in-ass kind of guy, I'm guessing you'll enjoy the subject matter regardless of religious views.

no thanks. GFWL has ruined this franchise for me (1)

flerndip (1191125) | more than 5 years ago | (#28121597)

I'll pass on this and future installments of the GTA franchise. Don't get me wrong, it used to be a wonderful game. But then, Rockstar got in bed with Microsoft. No, I do NOT want to have to log into Games For Windows Live just to save my game progress. No, I do NOT want to buy a game whose developers have no patience for game modding, single-player cheating, and other such tinkering. That's like buying a sandbox on rails. Developers who charge $50+ for a game, then require you to login to two or three different "services" (dubious terminology when they are designed to "serve" entities other than the customer - Windows Genuine Advantage anyone?), drown the product in crippling and invasive DRM, and then strictly dictate how you're allowed to enjoy the product you bought...can clearly do without my patronage henceforth. I won't touch another product with Games For Windows Live on it, and my 360 red-ringed long, long ago. Only Microsoft could stick its arrogant cock into something as vibrant as PC gaming and manage to ruin it.

Nothing really new in DLC (1)

mk3k (653983) | more than 5 years ago | (#28121869)

Yawn. Somebody wake me up when Rockstar decides to include parachutes, planes and jetpacks in their new content. What's that? Never going to happen? That's why I won't bother myself with these new DLC episodes. GTA4 was fun while it lasted, but there is no inherent reply value like there was with San Andreas, and these new DLC episodes don't really have anything we haven't seen before. A big "pass" in my mind.

Re:Nothing really new in DLC (1)

Aramil Moonmist (1548219) | more than 5 years ago | (#28123245)

It seems to me that there really isn't very good dlc out there. This gta dlc just sounds like a few added in missions. Same for fallout 3. I actually downloaded the 'extra level' in star wars force unleashed, and I was so ticked off that my $10 bought about 10 minutes of play time, for something without any new powers or anything interesting in it, just the same repeated stuff on a short level.

The only decent dlc out there imho is rockband/guitar hero song packs and the cod4 map pack, but now I'm starting to regret it even that because it seems to be a 50/50 chance between getting one of the 10 or so old maps, and getting one of the three new ones.

Maybe I'm just missing the good dlc out there, and I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

DLC Monopoly (1)

sanosuke001 (640243) | more than 5 years ago | (#28121921)

These DLC monopolies are crap. I paid just as much for my PS3 copy as someone did for their 360 copy and I get the shaft. I know Microsoft paid handsomely for it but if they're going to do this, just make the whole game exclusive so I could have just bought the 360 version at the beginning.

Oh, and as someone else stated, GFWL is crap. It's the same reason I haven't purchased the Fallout 3 DLC.

Meh. Now whiole sony and the PS2 was having all the exclusives of GTA, it didnt even make the news... it was "normal". Now Microsoft assures their product with dlc's only for their console and everyone gets pissed? You know how long ive waitied to play Final Fantasy on some other thing that is not a PlayStation Console?

Now one thing is bitching about the exclusivity and one thing is bitching about GFWL... which frankly I dont get your bitching either... if it bothers you so much, then torrent the games... you wont be contributing to their pockets, but you wont miss the game either. Lets see what you all replay to that.

Meh. Now whiole sony and the PS2 was having all the exclusives of GTA, it didnt even make the news... it was "normal".

I posit that it wasn't about "normal," but due to the fact that the PS2 had such a large market share. Analogous to creating a PC game while ignoring the Mac/Linux.

Re:DLC Monopoly (1)

Kildjean (871084) | more than 5 years ago | (#28131775)

Well now the 360 has the large market share... what can I tell you... [shrugs]

Re:DLC Monopoly (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#28132695)

You sir are ignorant. You cannot equate exclusive DLC to the PS2 error. There was no such thing as DLC back then. The fact is they released the game for both systems. They stopped supporting one because the other paid them too. (Yes I consider DLC as support and expansion to the game). In what world is that not fucked up...I don't blame the devs to much although I consider it selling out. But Microsoft is just trying to delay lose of market share by screwing the people that are not there customers. They are basically writing off all ps3 owners as non-360 customers.

Its a despicable business practice but it works. Instead of trying to gain market share and pull in new consumers they try to forcefully hold there current ones. It a sign that microsoft knows they can't last long again the ps3 but they can try to slow the bleeding until they get the next console out.
