The world's most expensive computer mouse, cast from 18 carat white gold and set with 59 brilliant cut diamonds. A wired 800dpi mouse? (2, Informative)

carlzum (832868) | more than 4 years ago | (#28146025)

Most of these "world's most expensive" gimmicks are usually just a $10k martini with a $9,500 diamond floating in it. You're paying a premium for the novelty and some attention, maybe you'll even get your name in the "wild and wacky" column in the local paper. But for $20k, shouldn't they have at least cast a wireless 5600 dpi mouse in gold? What did they save, $50-100? The wealthy person who gets a kick out of buying this will surely know a thing or two about mice. It's like that $10k martini being served in a plastic cup and mixed with well-brand vodka.

They had the money to cast it in gold, but not to engineer an external bluetooth antenna to get the RF outside of the gold shell.....figures...

I would want a $10,000 martini to have vermouth from the Titanic, gin from the Lusitania, and... some kind of.... magic olive?

It's a general problem with these so called "premium" consumer electronics. It is even worse in cases where the device needs to have a nontrivial firmware or OS component(like "luxury" cellphones and laptops).

The root of the issue is that electronics are all about volume. Software is the most extreme case, it costs a good deal to write; but nearly nothing to copy, so the per-unit cost absolutely plummets as volume increases. Hardware doesn't decrease quite as fast; but the same effect is felt. Since these "premium" products are supposed to be super-exclusive, they have to be very short run items. With runs that short, doing anything genuinely novel would drive the per-unit costs well beyond the reach of even the morons that buy stuff like this. Thus, virtually all products of the type end up being precious metal shells around ordinary consumer electronic guts.

Oh, if that's true then I'm disappointed it's not a serial mouse with a single button ;)

Bad news, Dr Zoidberg. Doctors usually make a lot of money.

...obviously this is geared to the rich celebrity Mac owners since it matches with their "simply amazing" computer!

It doesn't look good or seem to fit the shape of a hand. I think if this was the SECOND most expensive mouse then it would have lost its only attraction.

I don't have any respect for "world's most expensive X" which turns out to be "average or very cheap X with diamonds glued to it"
