If you actually DO have musical flatulence and can reproduce a tune from a video game, you could try submitting to Over Looked Remix [olremix.org]

So moderators, you think that you are so cool that you can proportionally downvote this guy. Well, I think that's insane. So insane that you should drop yourself down a well. And Lassie too so that no one knows that you are in a well. Then piranhas should be released so that you die a slow and painful death. It all boils down to you mods and editors sucking so much that I nightly terrorize SlashDong kind of like Ted Kaczynski but with fewer bombs. You guys are the complete dirt on the sidewalk, the rotten eggs discarded by the mother goose, and you are too stupid to realize it. You never post news, and at least Drew Curtis gets it. Fark has the same garbage that is later posted over here, but at least Drew completely dismisses this putrid mess as not being news. Suck my balls.

I've been listening to it myself. I had to download the torrent from Legit Torrents [legittorrents.info] as bt.ocremix.org was down when I tried to grab it.

Unfortunately bt.ocremix.org is also the tracker so establishing the swarm was difficult, but it did happen and download rate was good from there. I'd recommend using a client that enables you to pick-and-choose what you want to download as the vast majority of the download is composed of lossless FLAC recordings. If you like FLAC you're not going to want 423 MB of MP3, if you aren't an audiophile you aren't going to want the 3GB or so (IIRC) of FLAC files. The download is only 423 MB if you want everything but the FLACs.

I've only listened once so far so I have no definite impressions, but it's hard not to take note of Act 1-15 Fighting for Tomorrow which includes a choir, of all things...

Meh, when it gets larger than about 1 CD's size or so it becomes "I'll download it overnight" big, and I can't be bothered to remember the numbers from there. ;)

I think it's interesting that you posted a link to LegitTorrents. Considering that these are copyrighted works that have been covered by others without permission of the copyright holder, it's entirely feasible that the copyright holder could cry foul and would have enough legal grounding to bring a case before the courts. Even the use of the trademarked name "Final Fantasy IV" without permission in identifying the original source material from the which the OCRemix derivative works were based could be considered a violation of Square/Enix's trademark.

I of course am stating this because that very state of affairs with regard to the current laws affecting copyright and trademark law to be abhorrent. The work and artistry that goes into re-interpreting and re-performing these works is every bit as legitimate as the work and artistry that goes into re-interpreting and re-performing Shakespeare or Beethoven, and the public should have the right to do this with any published material, without fear of prosecution or legal harrassment.

Cool, I'm now a troll for not liking certain music. Since I'm pretty fucking sure that not a single person on Slashdot likes all music ever made, I suggest that moderators use all their mod points to mod as many people as possible as trolls. Or does it only count as trolling because the music is from OC? Or because it's Final Fantasy? Or because the moderator is a fucktard who should not be allowed to access the Internet? Help me out, here.

Slashdot's moderating system needs to be either scrapped entirely or massively overhauled. Almost every single negative moderation that occurs is illegitimate and based on nothing, and the moderators remain 100% anonymous and never have to explain anything. At the very least it should be possible to quickly report moderators who abuse their power, and have them banned from the site or permanently stripped of moderating powers. There's no reason whatsoever why stupid kids like the one(s) who modded me "troll" should be allowed to continue.

And now my other account's karma has dropped to bad for absolutely no reason, and I had to switch to this one. How long until I have to make a third one?

Metamoderation is worthless. We need a quick and direct solution: a report button. Also, moderators should not be anonymous. It would be even better if the current comment system was eliminated entirely and replaced with something that doesn't use voting.

P.S. people don't like sockpuppets or people who create disposable accounts just to shit on other people with.

I am the one who is being shit on by anonymous moderators who abuse their mod points and decrease my karma for no valid reason. I have no choice but to have multiple accounts.

Dear Dr. Impossible,

The ignorance you display is not your taste in music, it's your lack of social skills combined along with despite the fact that you keep pissing people off so much that you have to keep making a new account to escape your reputation, you still prefer to blame everyone else for your shit.

Re:This is awesome news (0, Offtopic)

Dr. Impossible II (1595121) | more than 5 years ago | (#28772565)

What does the fact that I was modded down as a troll for no reason have to do with social skills? What does calling out abusive moderators for their bullshit have to do with social skills? And how exactly am I pissing people off? Also, how am I "escaping" anything by having both accounts use the same name and by making it plainly obvious that both accounts belong to me? You talk a lot, but you aren't actually saying anything, or making any sense.

Show me even one instance where I was justifiably modded down as a troll.

Re:This is awesome news (0, Offtopic)

Chyeld (713439) | more than 5 years ago | (#28772971)

Your first post wasn't modded troll for no reason.

It was modded troll because it was a trollish post. Hint: A discussion isn't two people going "Yes!" "No!".

It wasn't the fact that you disliked the music, it was the fact that all you chose to share was "I dislike the music". That pisses people off. You come off like those twats who claim anything popular is crap and any one popular 'sold out'. We don't care what your opinion is, if you are going to share it with us, give us a reason to care, like the very up modded comment that came after yours where the commentor described what they liked about the album, what they didn't, and why.

  • Your original post, and the ones coming after it where you throw a temper tantrum, are the evidence of no social skills.
  • The fact that you blame the moderators for moderating you, is evidence of no social skills.
  • The fact that it escapes you that you are pissing people off, after having been chased out of at least three accounts, according to you, is evidence of no social skills.
  • The fact that your only response to my posts is the mental equivalent of going "La La La La! I can't hear you." is evidence of no social skills

Creating a new account to avoid the negative effects of your lack of social skills and failure to 'get the message' is by definition "escaping".

You bitch too much and listen too little, I'm not going continue this any longer. I'm sure in a few weeks we'll be hearing from your sixth account.

Re:This is awesome news (0, Offtopic)

It wasn't the fact that you disliked the music, it was the fact that all you chose to share was "I dislike the music". That pisses people off.

Final Fantasy/OC Remix fanboy getting sand in his vagina is not evidence of me trolling.

You come off like those twats who claim anything popular is crap and any one popular 'sold out'.

Where have I said made such claims?

We don't care what your opinion is, if you are going to share it with us, give us a reason to care, like the very up modded comment that came after yours where the commentor described what they liked about the album, what they didn't, and why.

There is nothing more to say. I wasn't impressed, and some of the songs sucked. Deal with it.

You did not provide a shred of evidence to prove that I committed any trolling. Your argument boils down to "you didn't like this album, therefore you are a dumb faggot. Oh, and a troll."

Your original post, and the ones coming after it where you throw a temper tantrum, are the evidence of no social skills.

In that case, all your posts are evidence of you being a child molester. Why? Well, because I say so!

See, I can do this too.

The fact that you blame the moderators for moderating you, is evidence of no social skills.

That doesn't make any logical sense, and I am specifically blaming the moderators for moderating me in a blatantly unjustified and factually incorrect manner.

The fact that it escapes you that you are pissing people off

Idiots are prone to getting pissed off for no reason.

after having been chased out of at least three accounts, according to you, is evidence of no social skills.

Since when have I been "chased out of at least three accounts?" And how would it be evidence of no social skills?

The fact that your only response to my posts is the mental equivalent of going "La La La La! I can't hear you." is evidence of no social skills

Now you're just making things up.

Creating a new account to avoid the negative effects of your lack of social skills and failure to 'get the message' is by definition "escaping".

I have absolutely no choice but to have multiple accounts due to the fact that Slashdot's discussion system is fundamentally broken and allows moderators to freely abuse their power and cause problems for other users. This is strictly the fault of Slashdot and its users.

You bitch too much and listen too little

"Hur hur, I have nothing substantial to say so I guess I'll just spout some random shit."

I'm not going continue this any longer. I'm sure in a few weeks we'll be hearing from your sixth account.

True, but very few musicians make their own music from the start.

They play what they hear or what they read in sheet music, then develop their own style and sense of harmony.

Much like a baby learning from its parents how to speak, then they develop their own style of speech.

As an additional note, if you're reluctant for whatever reason to download, you can stream/preview at Last.fm [www.last.fm] and/or check out the theatrical trailer over on Youtube [youtube.com] .

Our torrent tracker is indeed experiencing some load issues but we're working on getting the MP3s up in a single zip mediaupload/rapidshare fashion shortly, and individual MP3s are of course available at the site. The full torrent does include FLAC.

If running the site for almost ten years has told me one thing, it's that you can't please all the people all the time, but from a genre perspective at least this album features electronica, rock, orchestral, jazz, and much more. If Final Fantasy isn't your thing, please do check out the rest of our albums [ocremix.org] and individual mixes [ocremix.org] !

And, as a random side note, I administer/develop the site, it's LAMP, and I use Eclipse/PDT for all development and the Oxygen XML editor plugin for XSLT, which drives the frontend templating outside the wiki and forums. You know, just in case any one was wondering...

I've always wondered why you've used XSLT. Having used it at work (with Visual Studio), I can't stand it; I guess it didn't help that we were using especially horrid XML coming from the federal government's weather.gov web services.

I love it; it feels far more powerful than language-specific solutions like Smarty, it's W3C, and it's procedural and can be used to flatten/infer hierarchies and do all sorts of neat stuff, once you get over the learning curve.

Yeah, if your only exposure with it was on a fed contract, I can see why it might not seem like the bee's knees, but imo it's very underappreciated in the OSS community and a far better technical solution.

I just wish XSLT 2.0 was more widely supported...

Actually, I presently work with a state government, and as such, they wanted to go with weather.gov rather than a commercial service.

It looks like the senior developers never did push the new version to production [state.mi.us] , as the weather stuff is still broken there.

I'm glad to see that someone likes templating and frameworks for application development. I constantly receive criticism from people who say that I should write things from the ground up in PHP, instead of using symfony/Propel. It's easy to say that there will be "performance improvements," but the sites using ground-up PHP seem to never get finished because too much developer time is sucked down the drain reinventing the wheel.

quintin3265 (1552941) | more than 5 years ago | (#28769079)

I actually didn't listen to this album until after submitting it here.

The high point of this album is "Fallen Dragoon" (2-12). This song features what appears to be a live solo, and while my background as a violinist might make me partial to this track more than the metal-oriented tracks, it was performed beautifully. The vibrato and modulation in this piece are of professional caliber, and that part of the piece may be the second best remix the community has ever produced. (The best was a recently submitted FF9 vocal track). The artist obviously took the final boss theme from "The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time" as an influence to this work.

Also impressive is "Chocobo Chocobo." This song is a hit that could be played on the radio. The words are hilarious, the rapping is expertly done, and the song did not come out "corny" as videogame lyrics can (and as did happen with the final battle theme on this CD). Larry Orj obviously took his time writing exactly what he was going to say, and I'd be interested to know how many takes he needed to get the rapping right. It must have taken a hundred tries. The mixing and the baseline are also of the same quality as today's top 40 songs.

One of the things I noticed about Overclocked albums is that all of them advertise a "story" or a "build up" towards a finale, which is usually the final boss theme. I like this idea - I myself think that the final boss theme is the most important work in a game soundtrack. But, like the FF7 album, I was extremely disappointed in the way that the final boss theme (against Zeromus) was done here. In the Voices of the Lifestream album, the artists actually shortened One Winged Angel, which I thought was not a fitting conclusion to a four-disc, years long effort.

In this album, the Zeromus theme was similarly remixed too far from the original to make it a fitting conclusion to the work. The original melody was hidden behind the newer vocals and lost in the excessive guitars and bass, and, as stated above, the words selected did come out as "corny."

All in all, I think this project would have been better if some tracks were cut. There are far too many iterations of the "Main Theme," and the fist five mixes on the first disc had some variation of it. While each is good on its own, I became tired of listening to the same music over and over. Someone at The Shizz [theshizz.org] pointed out that many of the original influences for this OC ReMix CD were themselves remixes of the Main Theme, but I still think that the "story" didn't move forward during these similar pieces even though they weren't influenced by the same tracks. The original FF4 soundtrack, being from the SNES era, didn't have as much material to work with as FF7 or the other OC ReMix albums, and that shows in the repetition of many themes and tracks.

Re:Biggest problem: Too long (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#28769391)

I'm listening to it now and I think I agree with your assessment. The original soundtrack CD was 58 minutes, and this is 4 and a half hours. They could probably have trimmed it down by quite a bit and still have maintained the vision they had as the overall purpose of the album.

Re:Biggest problem: Too long (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 5 years ago | (#28770065)

First, thanks for giving the album a listen in any case. I just wanted to point out that Larry did the MCing intro, as far as I know, and the rest of the track was done by The Scuba Divers, who apparently don't reveal who's a member of that group.

Thanks for the detailed review; no mod points today so I'm commenting instead. I can't wait to get this. I wasn't too thrilled with Voices of the Lifestream, but FFIV is my favorite of the series (currently in the final dungeon on the DS version, something like my 5th play-through), so I think this is right up my alley.

I'm far from being a qualified music critic - indeed, I hardly listen to music at all - but have you ever heard one of OCRemix's early FFIV tracks named The Sky was Never a Limit [ocremix.org] by goat? I listened to that song on my drive to and from work everyday for weeks, and I still pop in my own personal OCRemix FF mix occasionally just for this song. The reviewer (djpretzel) had some minor problems with it, but I love it.

Also, I'm a sucker for a solid vocal track (I don't know the terminology, but by that I mean the kind of choir chanting in Halo's and HOMM4's soundtracks, not actual singing), so I'm interested in both this FF9 piece you speak of (I loved the Garnet's vocal track in the original), and Act 1-15 - "Fighting for Tomorrow" in this album which a previous poster mentioned. Regarding the FF9 track, it looks like you are talking about The Rose General [ocremix.org] , right? I'll have to give that one a listen as well.

The biggest damn problem with OCR is that it takes itself way too seriously.
