Fans Come Together To Complete Star Wars Uncut

samzenpus posted about 5 years ago | from the in-a-backyard-far-far-away dept.

It's funny. Laugh. 179

eldavojohn writes "Star Wars Uncut has taken a novel approach to remaking Star Wars IV: A New Hope. You merely sign up for a 15 second clip, film it and submit it. The trailer is now complete and I will suspect you might enjoy the high quality (and low quality) of some of the already accepted scenes. 251 scenes remain in need of claiming with 688 claimed and 291 finished. Do your part to remake one of the greatest movies by filming fifteen seconds of yourself and your friends!"

Right after the fan re-write of the "New Hope" script as haiku. I hear there's a Klingon translation in the works. Difficult at the outset. It is rumored that there's no Klingon word for "hope", other than the phrase "Your fear which I did not bring about." Some fans suggested coining a new word, but this was considered a violation of the received Klingon - they don't want to just "make stuff up."

Penis (-1, Troll)

poptones (653660) | about 5 years ago | (#29661737)

Imagine a giant penis flying towards your mouth, and there's nothing you can do about it. And you're like "Oh man, I'm gonna have to suck this thing", and you brace yourself to suck this giant penis. But then, at the last moment, it changes trajectory and hits you in the eye. You think to yourself "Well, at least I got that out of the way", but then the giant penis rears back and stabs your eye again, and again, and again. Eventually, this giant penis is penetrating your gray matter, and you begin to lose control of your motor skills. That's when the giant penis slaps you across the cheek, causing you to fall out of your chair. Unable to move and at your most vulnerable, the giant penis finally lodges itself in your anus, where it rests uncomfortably for 4, maybe 5 hours. That's what playing Final Fantasy 8 is like.

I think passing this off to a team of really good video editors and special effects people when its completed would be a neat idea. But people already did their own special effects in the clips which doesn't help. I suppose they could try asking for the raw clips but people won't all have them.

John Willaims has done music for pretty much every blockbuster of the past 30+ years:

Fiddler on the Roof
The Poseidon Adventure
Earthquake
The Towering Inferno
Jaws
Star Wars
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Superman
The Empire Strikes Back
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Return of the Jedi
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Empire of the Sun
The Witches of Eastwick
Born on the Fourth of July
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Home Alone
Hook
JFK
Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
Seven Years in Tibet
Amistad
Saving Private Ryan
The Phantom Menace
The Patriot
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
Minority Report
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
The Terminal
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Memoirs of a Geisha
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

If I were ever to make a movie, I'd get John Williams to do the soundtrack.

Although I appreciate John W's work (especially Schindlers list, Seven years in Tibet), he's not the only composer on the block. It seems somehow you've missed Hans Zimmer then. With well over 100 soundtracks under his belt, I'm surprised you managed to overlook him. Some block busters that carry his name are:

- Rain Man
- Gladiator
- The Davinci Code
- The Lion King
- Backdraft
- Pearl Harbor
- Pirates of the Carribean
- Simpsons - the movie
- Thunderbirds
- Batman Begins
- The Dark Knight
- Madagscar
- Kung Fu Panda
- Black Hawk Down
- Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

Difficult to ignore, I'd say.

You cannot be serious. Why would you want money when you can make a complete fool of yourself on X-Factor or America has got talent instead or one of those other pathetic reality TV shows which people get hooked on. Now if you just sit there, I will cut off your head with my light sabre to put you out of your misery. In the meantime, I am going to hump Natalie Portman and buy Father Anakin an S10 Gas Mask. We will then find a "worm hole" and end up on the Farscape set, Do a few Star Gates, meet Dr Who and the crew from the Tomorrow People and Blakes 7, hitch a ride on a Vogon ship from hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, get dropped on the set of Battlestar Galactica, have a few wars, then get beamed up by the Star Ship Enterprise just in time to save William Shatner's wife from drowning in a swimming pool. There will be an anomoly in the space time continum, when Q arrives and transports us back to earth where Serenity appears and saves all our arses, whilst half of the crew jerk of to Sigourney Weaver in Alien only to find out Predator is on the case, but not before BladeRunner makes a debut and Arnie is the Terminator, before moving from Austria to California pinching a woman's butt and declaring himself the govenor. I could go on, but I am tired of all this time travel. Cocoon *wink* I need to get back to reality and watch Weird Science and ask other slash doters, could we really make a girl as long as we wear Bra's on our heads. Damn Kelly le Brock is sexy! If 4chan made Star Wars, only beter (1)

SuperBanana (662181) | about 5 years ago | (#29661891)

Someone was definitely feeling their wheaties when they edited/timed the first face-paced segment. Some of the stuff is brilliant, though they should have allowed multiple submissions per segment; I saw some really, really bad stuff. As in, "hey, let's grab my point-and-shoot and spend 5 minutes on this." Somehow, the SVX seems strangely appropriate as a Millenium Falcon...ugly, cranky, and very weird. Nevermind it's absolutely hilarious when the driver shifts it into park to 'punch it'...

Re:If 4chan made Star Wars, only beter (4, Insightful)

interkin3tic (1469267) | about 5 years ago | (#29662187)

Some of the stuff is brilliant, though they should have allowed multiple submissions per segment

I disagree. They'd then end up with 400 submissions for "I'm Luke Skywalker: I'm here to save you," and big gaps elsewhere, like that critical 15 seconds early in the movie with Leia just sneaking around.

(They'd also probably end up with 800 takes of "That's no moon" in which there WAS a "moon." And they probably don't want to subject anyone to that.)

It also seems very interesting to me to see a frankenmovie of 15 second stretches of wildly varying quality. That's far more interesting to me than a frankenmovie of entirely medium to high quality 15 second clips.

Anyway, once they get the whole movie covered, then they can start accepting submissions for redoing scenes, then have a rating system for each segment. They'll then be able to make a -complete- movie of all the best scenes, emphasis on complete (the aforementioned Leia sneaking around might be pretty poor quality in the "best of" but at least it would be there).

And, again more interesting to me, they could then have a "worst of" where all the worst clips were strung together. And maybe they could then throw in some of the actual movie, like Mark Hamill's original "I'm here to save you!"

Re:If 4chan made Star Wars, only beter (2, Interesting)

Idiomatick (976696) | about 5 years ago | (#29662329)

I think this will actually result in an interesting curve in the quality levels. The boring pointless parts will be at a glance boring and pointless. With the cool parts that would suck to see badly done all... done well. A "worst of" version sounds like it could end up kind of painful. I think multiple ratings for funny or well done, high quality... could produce a variety of movies though.

Re:If 4chan made Star Wars, only beter (3, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29662825)

Oh, oh, I know!! You could set up a web site with all the clips collected together, but with a user-moderation system for each clip. Then you could view the whole movie at +5 or -1 and depending upon whether you want Funny, Insightful, or Troll, etc. (some people have strange tastes).

Re:If 4chan made Star Wars, only beter (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29662539)

Some people would work on the boring parts just so their parts would make the final cut. I'd be more likely to contribute to the scenes that are less in demand so that they have a better chance of getting used.

They did allow multiple submissions per scene, and say they plan to have some sort of rating system to see which makes the final cut, and to keep the alternates so people can watch it differently. Its in the FAQ on their site, which has more text than all of the rest of the site as far as I could see.

If they let people do any part they wanted.... They could with a little bit of programming have it pick a random 15second clip of what is available for the time slot. It would be a bit different each time. Or people could vote on the best rendition for each time slot to improve the thing.

In any case it is a pretty cool project. And the first 'Open Source' over the internet fan made movie I've heard of. I've been in fan made anime dubs before but that was mostly to horrify anyone that downloaded it to the point of tears.

Re:Implications (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29663617)

Haven't they already done that?

No, seriously: much of the OT comes from oral tradition. It's not like they kept a single book they called "The Bible." There were also a bunch of writings, but there was no single source for these - they came out of oral tradition.

When it was finally compiled together, you sometimes had competing versions of the same account. For example, the accounts of Moses. There are something like three different accounts, roughly the same, but telling slightly different viewpoints. Rather than reconcile them to a single text, they were all compiled together into a single text. So you get three redundant sentences with the same event, but with slightly different takes.

Once the Catholic Church had then compiled together the "official" version of the Bible ("canon"), it sort of forced the hand of Jewish scholars to put together an official version of their own. Not all the "Old Testament" books made the cut in this version. That's the "original source" that Martin Luther went back to, which explains why Protestant and Catholic Bibles contain different texts.

Think of it as a sort of "Han shot first" debate.

Well he couldn't very well murder the LIZARD man in WARM blood, now could he?

And these were the scenes they accepted? The "Night of the Living Dead" made this way was much more fun.

Apple quicktime?!?! (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29662197)

Well I was going to sign up for this just because it sounds like a lot of fun, and I am a huge star wars fan. However I quickly found out that they use quicktime for all their video formats. I have boycotted quicktime after reading an article (on slashdot no less) that quantified just how awful quicktime is, by showing that it was the buggiest application ever written.

If they switch to using a different format, then maybe I'll actually participate!

Is there a reason why the site doesn't work? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29662257)

I click on the white "248 free" link and nothing happens. The "finished" and "taken" links work just fine. Maybe I'm just dumb and this is just a quirky Web2.0 UX thing that I just don't get.

Then again, when I tried to sign up for this the last time they called out for people it was all filled up. Looks like there are a lot of flakes involved.

At any rate, you'd think that getting people involved would be the most important thing at this point, but as it stands it's just a playback site for already-completed snippets. Big whoop, I can do that at Vimeo itself.

Re:Is there a reason why the site doesn't work? (3, Informative)

GiMP (10923) | about 5 years ago | (#29662447)

It is pretty confusing. The "free" link lists all scenes that haven't yet been "claimed" or "finished". Currently, there are no scenes that are neither. However, each scene may be claimed/finished up to three times, so you can select a scene that has only 1-2 claims against it, or if you see a "finished" scene which you feel could be done better, you can put a claim against it.

Currently, finished scenes are marked in blue and claims are marked in red. Any scene that has less than a total of three claims, finished or not (if red+blue 3), may be claimed.

Anyone else just feel compelled to turn it off a mere 10 seconds after hitting play? "George Lucas must be rolling in his grave"

15 seconds? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29662449)

Absolutely not enough time for anything decent IMO.
30-60 seconds would have been much better.

I think i know why they chose 15 seconds, but it might not be to everyone's tastes.

You suspected most wrongly. (0)

I will suspect you might enjoy the high quality (and low quality) of some of the already accepted scenes

No I did not.

World of Warcraft? (1)

2obvious4u (871996) | about 5 years ago | (#29662789)

I'm amazed there isn't a scene made from inside world of warcraft for this yet...

maybe a scene using flying mounts to simulate star ships?
maybe one of the lightsaber duels?

Who shoots first...? (3, Funny)

RyuuzakiTetsuya (195424) | about 5 years ago | (#29662791)

Big question, who has to shoot first in this one? Han or Greedo?

IMHO, Greedo shot first, I have video evidence.

Now that the slashdot group has been advised of this offering, how many scenes of Nalilie Portman pouring hot grits down someones pants do we actually need?

Forget about that (0)

What I'd like to see is a complete remake of Spaceballs by the Robot Chicken team!

now I know why hollywood is so successful (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 5 years ago | (#29663059)

cause every movie they make has people that look 100x better.

A super idea. Very forward thinking, but just looking at the trailer with clips of bad lighting, close ups of average looking people makes me want to barf. Now, bad.

Carrie Fisher in a skimpy outfit under great lighting >>>> anything on youtube that hints of StarWars. And that's an area were John Williams can't save.

Wouldn't it be wiser to remake Ep I, II or III? (1)

theendlessnow (516149) | about 5 years ago | (#29663613)

Why remake the good Star Wars IV movie? I'm all for redoing the stupid ones: I, II and III.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
