Man "Beats" World of Warcraft

CmdrTaco posted more than 4 years ago | from the and-you-thought-your-life-was-empty dept.

Games 655

Precision pointed out that a Taiwanese man has been named the first ever person to successfully beat World of Warcraft, getting all 986 achievements, completing 5906 quests and /hugging 11 players. Insert joke here. There are many.

How can you kill that which has no life??

Re:Of course (1, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#30311336)

Well, if he's like every other person I know who has become particularly "accomplished" at games like this, you just wait until the pathetic lardball has a massive heart attack at the age of 34.

I played WoW, and it's okay, but I can't keep interested anymore for more than a month at a time, and in more than three years I've only paid for a total of 14 months of playtime, about a month of which I didn't actually even play. It's a great time waster, but people like this either have some seriously bizarre priorities in life compared to everyone else, or have some sort of serious mental disorder and need urgent help.

Re:Of course (4, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#30311632)

I'm not sure why your short attention span is any more admirable. I might agree that this particular persons priorities are difficult to understand, but no more than most MIT applicants, or football stars, or that girl who has given head to over a dozen different guys by the time she was 15. Reasonable people assume "all things in moderation" is the correct way to live life, however there's really no proof that this is correct.

Re:insert joke here (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#30311788)

I'm not sure you can infer homosexuality anymore from the term "gay". Much like it used to prevalently mean happy, I think its meaning has changed somewhat again and has come closer to the term "queer"... both could be taken as a homosexual reference, but could also just mean strange, unusual, or odd from the conventional viewpoint (queer:dictionary.com)

I.e. Out of the box, You can't tether your iPhone to your laptop for internet access... that's gay! (may also mean dumb or absurd as well)

In just about any sport outside of bowling, referees are prone to make BS calls. Just because this guy got 100% of the achievements, he did it via a glitch in the program. Technically he may have beaten the game, but spiritually he fails.

Socially too, I bet.

He fails 'spiritually' by not having an achievement that's impossible to get at present? If speculation is right, he'll get that in a couple weeks anyway. Agreed on the social fail, though (and I even play wow).

It's all a matter of degree. I know and have known people who smoke the occasional doobie or bowl, but balance that activity against all the other priorities of life. I have also known people who were chronic, habitual drug users, and basically flushed their lives down the toilet attempting to service their addiction.

I have absolutely no idea how many hours it takes to "beat" WoW, but I have a hunch this guy is not somebody I would consider to be a resounding success in the real world.

Sure, you probably don't have a lot of social butterflies on this site, but I'd wager that very few of them are really the reclusive shut-in that you would have to be to accomplish such a feat. There are levels of obsession with anything, and this guy's case seems pretty extreme by any measure. I can't even imagine the amount of time this sort of thing would take, and how many other things he could have been doing.

I don't want to sit around mocking this guy for this, but I do feel sorry for him. After all, after his own personal sense of accomplishment over this feat has faded, he's going to be left looking back at all the time he spent on it, and the fact that he ultimately has nothing of any value to show for it. That can be very depressing.

I know its fun for /.ers ourselves lonely losers, but in reality, most of the readers are likely quite successful in one way or another, or all the "your rights online" and quazi-political articles and such would be meaningless.

The devil is in the details. Living in the basement semi-perpetually, but productively working on, say, Linux kernel is one thing. Doing the same thing for the sake of "winning" WoW is another.

Re:To Everyone... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#30311882)

A life is very subjective. Some people think living is getting drunk with a different hooker every weekend. Some think it is settling down with someone you may or not be able to live with and having kids. I wouldn't like to do either, and I don't think many would think my lifestyle counts as 'having a life,' but the point it, different strokes for different folks.

High Five brother. I beat a 2.5 year long WoWcrack addiction myself years ago. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Those long, back-knotted nights of failed Stratholme runs and epic fails. Noobs causing my blood pressure to rise exponentially in the Arathi Highlands....The cold chills of the 4 AM morning air nipping at my underwear-shod body, the only thing driving my spirit was the pipe dream of epic loots and bragging rights in Ironforge. Before Illidan. Before Arthas. Back when you knew how dedicated a WoW player was based on how high their fishing skill was....

*shudder*

I was one of the few ones lucky enough to turn away from that hell with my life still intact. I feel a bond with others I meet that were able to do the same. Stand strong my friend...relapse is easy.

I suppose therin lies the difference between MMO and MUDS or a real RPG. You'd never reach that many deaths in most MUDS or RPGs: your character would wind up perma-dead.

Re:Deaths (2, Insightful)

Microlith (54737) | more than 4 years ago | (#30311794)

And that's one of many reasons WoW has a huge audience compared to most MUDS and RPGs: they don't punish the player horribly for dying.

I think dying and losing a level would be enough of a setback to drive much of WoW's audience away. You'd end up with considerably more people who can actually play the game at the level cap, but for Blizzard it'd crimp revenues.

I contend that is impossible for one player to become the server's first max skill leatherworker, blacksmith, alchemist, enchanter, and engineer (plus there's a few more) so there is no possible way he could attain "ALL" the achievements.
