Indian Sect Members Vow To Marry Sex Workers

samzenpus posted more than 4 years ago | from the marry-a-prostitute-day dept.

Idle 21

More than 1,000 followers of a multi-religious sect in northern India have decided to buck traditional wisdom and turn whores into housewives in an attempt to help them escape exploitation. The group (DSS) claims their pledge will also help stop the spread of AIDS. It is estimated that 40%-50% of women working in red light districts in large cities are HIV carriers. Dr Aditya Insan, a senior DSS functionary, said, "This will have to be a slow and delicately handled process. Many women are HIV-positive. Some have young children and are understandably concerned about their future. We need to ensure these women are protected legally once they are married."

this certainly will strike a few chords. or more in the USA, just because of how controversial this is. Though the ironic thing would be if people in the USA did this as well, if this DSS group had ties here.

Nutcases (1, Flamebait)

So, where are the anti-theist nuts to contribute to this thread by saying something utterly stupid? Like that people are forming religions just to bang whores (that's just on the top on my head, I'm sure they'll be able to come up with even dumber theory)?

Re:Nutcases (0)

point of clarification: are you equating a-theistic behavior with anti-theistic behavior?

Re:Nutcases (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#30494238)

it's basically been the same for a few decades now.

Wait... what does the actual existence or non-existence of a god or gods have to do with people organizing through religion to do something good for others?

You must not know very many cultural Jews.

Zealous atheists (esp. on Slashfot) often blame religion for lots of evils in the world. GP is asking how they plan on turning this into a negative.

How's this:

The demonstrated link between educating women and raising living standards in third world countries has little to do with basic sanitation or in sending them into the workforce. It's main benefit is to counter a lot of the bullshit spread by organized religion: to inform young people that children are not "miracles" sent by God to help harvest your crops. Rather, they consume resources and cost money and having everyone reproduce past the rate of replacement is a recipe for ecological disaster and inescapable, crushing poverty.

You can draw a straight line from those guys standing there with their hands up, through the religious shamans, imperialist priests and other irresponsible leaders misinforming and improperly educating young women, failing to teach sane economics and basic physics, encouraging overpopulation and resource depletion, through other exploitative institutions from sweatshops to poorly-structured welfare programs to red light districts everywhere, right to the penniless, child-burdened female sex workers they are pretending to "rescue" from the ridiculously poor decisions every one of them sanctioned and encouraged.

Wow, you really hate yourself and every other human being on this planet huh.

Yea, I suppose it's better we go out with a bang than the animals - I'm sure they'll be consciously aware of the sacrifice we have just made for them.

I guess since I used the word "ecological" you're under the impression that I care about "saving the animals" [rackspacecloud.com] .

You are saying that someone is a "nut" for being against the belief in a Giant Bearded Fairy in the sky? Just so we are clear on what you are say....

Re:Nutcases (1)

NotBornYesterday (1093817) | more than 4 years ago | (#30500382)

He's saying they are "nuts" because "sarcastic, condescending zealots" is a lot more to type. I'm not particularly religious or spiritual, but I try to avoid mocking others for what they do or do not believe.

Re:Nutcases (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#30525070)

sarcastic : implies an intentional inflicting of pain by deriding, taunting, or ridiculing
condescending : patronizing attitude or behavior
zealot : fanatic or a person with an extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal

I am not an anti-theist; atheist yes, but not an anti-theist. I believe his comment was intended to rile and therefore I think he was asking for ridicule due to the nature of his comment. And if you are going to call anyone a "sarcastic condescending zealot", I think he may be lumped into that category. And as far as mocking goes, I think calling someone "nuts" for not believing or being against something is a mockery in itself.

This might turn out, if true, to be a real world execution of ideas proposed in Steven E. Landsburg's article (and subsequent book) "More Sex Is Safer Sex". The arguement goes that getting sexually conservative segments of the population to socially engage the sexually prolific segment of the population dampens the amount of partner swapping that goes on and can thus slow the rate of infection. There is a research paper in here somewhere that would make a good candidate for the Ig Nobel prize.
