Dating Site Cuts Off the Fat

samzenpus posted more than 4 years ago | from the I-take-up-seven-rows dept.

Idle 18

the4thdimension writes "Online dating site BeautifulPeople.com has apparently decided to cancel over 1,500 of its customers because they were found to have put on too much weight this holiday season. The site, which bases its business model on having only attractive people on its site, requires that a user be voted in by current members as being beautiful in a 48 hour period. The site claims that having overweight people on its site is directly damaging to its business model, but promises that expelled members can register again once they lose the weight."

Honestly, if you're shallow enough to sign up for a dating website for beautiful people only, can you really complain if you get kicked out?

Honestly, if you're stupid enough to sign up for a dating website for beautiful people using your own, un-photoshopped picture instead of one culled from an online fashion magazine, can you really complain if you get rejected?

Curses, my plan to sign up using a fictional perfect persona then gradually morph myself into the fat, bald little bastard I really am has been foiled!

Humans, especially males, are evolved to put significant weight on the appearance of their potential sex partners in their decision process on which ones to choose.

Nothing shallow about it. Its evolution baby.

Au contraire!

"Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded."

Why is this on slashdot? (1)

Locke2005 (849178) | more than 4 years ago | (#30658392)

I'm fairly certain the intersection of the set of slashdot members and the set of beautiful people members is a null set!

I have made no attempts to join Mensa or Beautiful People...

I'm fairly certain that only slashdot members would choose to phrase that particular point in terms of set theory.

That's because we're hopelessly geeky and too proud to sign up for a dating site, not because we're ugly.

That's my excuse, anyway.

I was so going to do this (1)

After the monumental amount of seriously obese people on OkCupid and other dating sites I seriously considered creating a dating site identical to this BeautifulPeople. While it's a shame that the idea has already been done (of course), it's good to see that the idea would have been a successful one.

Then there was the bait and switch that I had on OkCupid... some people have a very loose definition of "athletic". Anyway, I fully support the idea behind this particular dating website.

It sounds like that site is indeed perfect for you. You're exactly the kind of shallow person they want.

A word of advice.

Do NOT visit uglypeople.com. Sure, it sounds like a good joke or a protest about these sorts of sites; but it's one of those Not Safe For Work places

how to make people read about you during the hollyday season....
Assuming that 1500 member of this site really have taken a lot of weight over the past couple of month/weeks, how much time does it take to detect and repport it ? ...
So it is most probably just a random guessimate destined to make us think that after "culling fatties" this site will have even more beautiful people, and by the way I had almost forgotten about them, now I remember I might even speak about it at a diner ..
and therefore make people notice...

Evil but good :-)
