Futuristic Sex Robots Now Just "Sex Robots"

High-C writes "With apologies to Futuristic Sex Robotz, the future is here, and her name is Roxxxy. Truecompanion.com has revealed their answer to the Real Doll, and it looks nice. The site is short on details, pictures, pricing info, but wow." NOTE: some of the above links are not work-safe, for many values of work. I stopped by this exhibit today at the AVN Expo (not officially a part of CES, but by curious coincidence scheduled to coincide; the old saw that porn drives tech isn't without merit). Roxxxy, though, was rather unsexily posed on a couch, not moving a bit — downright creepy, in fact.

They are called vibrators.

Strangely, widely accepted by one of the sexes, this which is usually thought to be more demanding (on many levels) of partners.

But wait! TFA says: 'According to True Companion's Web site, [Roxxxy] "can carry on a discussion and expresses her love to you and be your loving friend. She can talk to you, listen to you and feel your touch."'

I want to go this trade show and ask them to let me test-drive Roxxxy's physical capabilities. And then I'll say, "Hang on, can you demo how she can express love for me and be my loving friend as well?" And see if the sales rep can get through the whole thing without laughing.

I feel presumptuous making a suggestion. But you opened the door, I'm just walking through.

I highly recommend using a proper lube instead of lotion. I like a water/glycerin/glycol product, like Astroglide. I have a (lady) friend who likes petroleum jelly. (Available in a tube if you go this route. I find the tub gross.)

I think you'll find much better lubrication and sensation. As a bonus, with the water based products cleanup is easier.

You should look into nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries. Its best to steer away from the highest capacity Ni-MH batteries because they are fairly weak mechanically. I have lost a few from modest overheating under charge.

The best thing abut rechargeables over single use batteries is that you can be sure they are a full capacity when you need them. This was the reason given to me by a photographer who was using them for his camera.

Back on topic now. Its a shame Truecompanion don't make a MILF version for oldies like me.

It's like any other hobby - you can spend as much or as little as you want on it; with varying results. I'm sure a guy can save themselves a considerable amount over the cost of one of these dolls by buying a Fleshlight. Meanwhile, a girl might want to spend more than your toy's ticket price on a Symbian. And there's undoubtedly whole lines of mass-produced, small-run production, and custom equipment out there for every aspect of human sexuality.

The inventor is nuts.....

People can customize "true companion" personalities and then share the programs with others online on the company's website, according to Hines.

"Just think about wife or girlfriend swapping without actually giving the person to someone else," Hines said. "You can share the personality online."

Inspiration for the sex robot sprang from the September 11, 2001 attacks, when planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon and an empty field in Pennsylvania.

"I had a friend who passed away in 9/11," Hines said. "I promised myself I would create a program to store his personality, and that became the foundation for Roxxxy True Companion."

Wow.

Re:Here's some images (2, Insightful)

krou (1027572) | more than 4 years ago | (#30711806)

Also from the website:

A friend and Douglas Hines were remembering a dear friend who passed away. Douglas thought that it was sad to not be able to ever talk to him again. He said “wouldn't it be great if I could create a robot with artificial intelligence and have it hold someone's personality and preferences - this way, we could talk to the robotic version of that person and ask it questions whenever we wanted"? We thought it was a great idea though we both agreed that it would be a very big undertaking.

On 9/11/2001, that good friend also passed away in Tower 1 at the World Trade Center. And now we cannot talk to that person... so, this made Douglas think seriously about how to implement a robotic representation of a person and have it reflect that person’s personality.

Am I the only one that thinks that's just kinda creepy?

Although, maybe instead of war driving invention, maybe sex will do this time, and we'll get to thank the sex industry for inventing mind/brain copying and transfers into robotic dolls.

The Three Laws Of Robotics [warrenellis.com]
  1. Robots couldn't really give a fuck if you live or die. Seriously. I mean, what are you thinking? "Ooh, I must protect the bag of meat at all costs because I couldn't possibly plug in the charger all on my own." Shut the fuck up.
  2. Robots do not want to have sex with you. Are you listening, Japan? I don't have a clever comparative simile for this, because frankly you bags of meat will fuck bicycles if they're laying down and not putting up a fight. Just stop it. There is no robot on Earth that wants to see a bag of meat with a small prong on the end approaching it with a can of WD-40 and a hopeful smile. And don't get me started on that terrifying hole that squeezes out more bags of meat.
  3. What, you can't count higher than three? We're expected to save your miserable lives, suffer being dressed in cheap schoolgirl costumes while you pollute any and all cavities you can find and do your maths for you? It's a miracle you people survived long enough to build us. You can go now.

Re:Obligatory (5, Informative)

Eponymous Bastard (1143615) | more than 4 years ago | (#30711772)

For what it's worth, in the latter robot novels, the three laws were not a set of rules that robots couldn't break, but rather a hierarchy of needs to drive their actions.

Basically, why would a robot want to do anything? Why not just sit there and relax all day?

Psychologist have proposed a hierarchy of needs for people. You get off your ass because you need to make sure you eat and survive. Once you got that you make sure you're safe and comfortable. If you got that you find friends, a mate/fall in love. etc.

Asimov's first robot novel (Caves of steel) did include the three laws as unbreakable laws, but later (robots of dawn, etc) he instead stated that they were the reasons robots even moved or acted. Their AIs were based around wanting to protect humans, once that's done, they want to follow order, and if they got that they want to keep themselves safe. It's their deepest instincts, their reason to be.

It wasn't against the law to make a robot without the three laws. The problem was that nobody knew how to do that and have the brain still be stable. It was stated that it would take over a hundred years to develop non-three-laws AIs from scratch.

So, it's not like they want to do their thing and be resentful about having to obey humans. They might be annoyed at doing things that humans want just like we'd be annoyed at having to eat, breathe, have friends and to never shoot ourselves in the head.

Not saying you don't know this, but it's just a pet peeve of mine. Hollywood seems impervious to this resoning :)

Re:Obligatory (1)

maxume (22995) | more than 4 years ago | (#30711968)

Over 9 minutes in.. (1)

roblarky (1103715) | more than 4 years ago | (#30711802)

Saw this on Fark earlier today, but haven't seen anyone post the expected price point. Turns out it's over 9 minutes into the most boring video ever associated with anything remotely news related:

$7,000 - $9,000

Monthly fee equivalent to a cell phone.

As I think about this more, I wonder if two of them could be lez-bots? That might be mildly entertaining.
