Milverton Wallace Organizes Hackathons in Great Britain (Video)

Programming 11

Milverton Wallace (@milvy on Twitter) might seem an unlikely candidate to be setting up hackathons in the UK; his background is as a journalist, and he was born a few thousand miles away in Jamaica. Nonetheless, when I met up with him at last month’s AppsWorld in London, he was about to conduct another in a series of hackathons at Google’s London campus. He’s got some interesting things to say about the mechanics and reasons for putting a bunch of programmers (and/or kids who aren’t yet programmers per se) into a room, and giving them a good environment for creativity. He has some harsh words for the UK school system’s approach to computer education (which sounds an awful lot like the U.S. approach in far too many schools), and praise for efforts (like the Raspberry Pi Foundation) to bring programming to British classrooms, both earlier and with more depth. The same ideas should apply world-wide.

Sorry! There are no comments related to the filter you selected.

We don't have classes for every subject known to us, why should programming be an exception? I only have a tiny idea about how my car works, how electricity is brought to my home, etc. What's next? Classes on CNC machining, CNC lasercutting and 3D printing? Why not classes about XML, HTML, CSS, Javascript and Photoshop while we're at it?

The fault of parents ... (2)

Taco Cowboy (5327) | about a year ago | (#45469795)

What is the use of complaining about the failure of the school system if we, as parents, don't even bother to teach our own children in the first place ?

The fault of parents nowadays is that we OUTSOURCE the task of teaching our own children to schools.

If we are to become parents, it's our primary responsibility to ensure that our children know how to learn, and how to enjoy the process of learning.

Too many times I see parents throwing their children to school and then wipe their hands off as though it's none of their business what their children gonna learn in school and how their children will end up becoming.

Obama official again lowers bar (-1)

Anonymous Coward | about a year ago | (#45467527)

"The Obama administration is lowering the bar again on the problem-plagued ObamaCare website, saying that it will be “greatly improved” by month’s end -- not fixed.

“The consumer experience will be greatly improved for the vast majority of users by November 30,” Henry Chao, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ deputy chief information officer, will tell House investigators on Tuesday, according to written testimony obtained by Fox News.

Chao’s testimony, 11 days before the fix deadline, appears to be the most recent case of the administration attempting to lower expectations, or at least prepare Americans for more problems when attempting to enter the site to purchase insurance policies that begin coverage January 1."

These rocket fucking scientists can't even build a website to spec, and you all are just A-OK with turning over all our healthcare decisions to them. Healthcare decisions that will affect us, our parents, our children, our lives.

We would be better off just fucking ignoring the whole doctor and science thing and just drinking Brawndo and HOPEing for the best.

You extremist Democrats have fucked us beyond belief.

Sigh. Yes, Obama and everyone who's even tangentially related to him or an idea he is attributed to having all suck. They'll be our ruin. We get it. We really do. We know.

What would you have us do about it? How can we help fix things?

Oh, you don't know? Then you're boring. Go away, and take your self-righteous off-topic bullshit with you. We're reading about hackathons here.

Slashdot is filled with extremist Democrat socialist leaning voters and has forced this tyrannical monstrosity upon the people of the US, not single handedly of course, but you all did your part like good little drones and you all know it.

YOU forced this on us. Therefore you need to own up to it and defend your unconstitutional power grab and your tyrannical boy king, Choomie the dog eater.

This law is ruining lives; it will result in people losing thier lives, bankrupting people, uncountable suffering.

DEFEND YOUR POSITION! You cannot of course, but you bought it you lying scumbags.

Now the chocolate jesus is talking about bailing out the insurance companies.

If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor.

"REP. CORY GARDNER: Well how much do we have to build today, still? What do we need to build? 50 percent? 40 percent? 30 percent?

HENRY CHAO: I think it's, uh, just an approximation, we're probably sitting somewhere between 60 and 70 percent because we still have to build...

GARDNER: Wait, 60 or 70 percent that needs to be built, still?

CHAO: Because we still have to build the payment systems to make payments to insurers in January.

GARDNER: Let me get this correct. Sixty to 70 percent of Healthcare.gov still needs to be built?

CHAO: It's not really about Healthcare.gov -- it's the federally-facilitated marketplace.

GARDNER: The entire system that the American people are being required to rely upon...

CHAO: Healthcare.gov -- the online application, verification, determination, plan compare, getting enrolled, generating the enrollment transaction -- that's 100 percent there."

Gross incompetence! Criminal I would say.

So start eating your shit sandwich you drones, I am not going away.

Oh and BTW; "What would you have us do about it? How can we help fix things?"

Well I do know.

Send money to Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and there are others. Call your Senator and representative and demand full accountability, demand that Obama live up to his promise to allow us to keep our health insurance plans/doctors/hospitals. Demand full repeal of this unconstitutional legislation. Talk to your friends and family about this monstrosity and what it will mean to them now and in the future.

Act responsibly! This is your government and your rights that are being stripped away - not to mention your health.

And above all vote against Democrat statism - and Republican Statism for that matter.

These are things we can all do.

... all I can do is to shake my head in disbelief.

I had no part in electing Obama into the White House, in fact, I actively supported the alternative candidates (both times), but the force was with the bamadrones and he got re-elected again, and again.

If you guys haven't realized it, here's the fact ...

In the year 2010,, Obama has classified 77 MILLION PAGES OF DOCUMENTS. In comparison, George "the idiot" Bush's highest score was 54 million pages, in year 2008.
