STOP (0, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701492)

Stop with the inane April Fool's Day "joke", and I use that term loosely, posts. These aren't funny.

Re:STOP (4, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701566)

What most certainly is funny is all the people whining about how unfunny the articles are.

Re:STOP (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701622)

The volume of April 1st whiners seems incredibly high this year.

Re:STOP (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701756)

Yeah, I am sick and tired of "complainers" [zi.ma] myself. This video stuff is funny because you can't stop it. The articles are funny. Lighten up and enjoy it.

Re:STOP (1)

Funny story: I opened a lot of Slashdot tabs in Firefox today, bogging down my work PC with all the SlashRoulette instances. This caused Firefox to crash, and then reload a billion other Slashdot tabs, bogging the browser down harder and crashing it again. On the third restart I removed fsdn.com from my NoScript whitelist.

Hahaha you got me Slashdot.

Limited social ability? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701728)

The people who are associated with Slashdot seem to be socially challenged. They must not only lack a sense of humor, but not have a good understanding of the nature of humor to think that those April 1 Slashdot stories are funny.

Playing video games too much tends to cause people to be mentally primitive.

Re:STOP (1)

Demonantis (1340557) | about 4 years ago | (#31701748)

It would be more fun if they were interspersed with actual articles so you never really know which are which. Thats usually part of the challenge for an April fools jokes. But then all the joke was way to realistic posts would disappear.

complaining about a tradition many more people DO find amusing. It's one day, you know it's not real, get over it. No one thinks you're more cool or mature because you're 'above' this.

Re:STOP (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31702488)

Who actually finds the lame april fools stories that are posted on slashdot every year actually funny? Are these the same people who think dumbasses like Carlos Mencia are funny?

Mod Funny, Ruin his Karma (1)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701816)

I'm pretty fucking sick of reading your bullshit. It may be somewhat believable to the dullards that infest this place, but I know better.

Hopefully the moderators will help me (and themselves) ruin your karma.

+1 Funny = +0 Karama
-1 Troll = -1 Karma
+1 Informative = +1 Karma

A Troll Vs. Funny moderation war will ruin someone's karma.

Do the right thing.

Heh, April first jokes (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701518)

It was funny the first time. When was that? 10 years ago?

Re:Heh, April first jokes (1)

Lunix Nutcase (1092239) | about 4 years ago | (#31701524)

April first jokes were ever funny?

Re:Heh, April first jokes (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701678)

When I was 16 I said to a girl I liked that I'll be coming over tonight (she lived far away, you know, we met on the internet and so on). She went all "seriously?" and scared that she needs to clean some and so on. After a while teasing her, I told her "nah I'm just kidding, totally got you!" - really smooth, because she answered that she would had taken me there, but not now that I fooled her. I had to wait half an year for a new opportunity to come before seeing her.

Not only are April fools unfunny, they can backfire good.he

Re:Heh, April first jokes (1)

e2d2 (115622) | about 4 years ago | (#31701682)

Maybe back when they called the movies "The talkies" and Vaudeville was still around.

Here's a nickel kid, go buy an ice cream. Now 23 skadoo ya soda jerk!

Re:Heh, April first jokes (0)

April Fool's Day actually dates back 1871. President Grant issued a declaration declaring that "April 1 shall henceforth be a day for fools." He was drunk at the time.

That's the true April fool's joke. They pummel you with jokes until you puke. Hilarious.

Re:Just fucking stop (1)

MobileTatsu-NJG (946591) | about 4 years ago | (#31701744)

It has been consistently unfunny for the last 10 AFDs. What is funny is that EVERY YEAR, even though we all know it's coming, people still come on here and bitch about it and people STILL waste mod points on it as if Slashdot's going to change.

Pathetic.

Re:Just fucking stop (1)

Less is more with the April fools jokes (5, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#31701530)

You had me until the 10 people bit when everyone knows 2 maybe 3 people could handle the wave traffic.

Re:Less is more with the April fools jokes (1)

dyerto (1750266) | about 4 years ago | (#31701886)

The number would need to be much higher than 10. This is not a problem with demand, no. It is a problem with geography. Google Wave is available to more than 10 countries. For this scheme to work, with a reasonable response time, we would need at least one or two people per country (depending on country size). Other than this impracticality, I like the idea... It would also require people to have gps tracking turned on so the Google people could find them...

Re:Less is more with the April fools jokes (1)

natehoy (1608657) | about 4 years ago | (#31702562)

If you want to stop incredibly long journeys, I think you could get by with about 10.

One for the US, one for Canada (two nations with heaviest user base). One for South America. One for Europe (who could get to GB using the Chunnel), one for Asia, one for Africa and Madagascar, one for Australia and surrounds (Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea). Maybe one for Japan, since they probably have it integrated into their smartphones or maybe even their cerebral cortexes by now. Maybe one for Cuba and the islands in that general vicinity, who can part-time it up to Florida when retirees are "waving" the best Early Bird Specials to each other. And one floater to cover heavy demand during the short period between someone discovering it and implementing it for their project team, then discovering it's a jack of all trades that can't do any of them well enough to be useful. China will have blocked it by now, so no worries there. There's your ten.

The Arctic and Antarctic, Easter Island, the Aleutians, and various and sundry other tiny populations or islands could either hire a taxi driver as needed, or keep a subcontractor, or be covered by spare capacity from the nearest large customer base.

Michael Palin could be the floater, and make money on the side filming a new special "Waving Madly with Michael Palin".

Sarah Palin could use semaphore flags to signal Eastern Russia, since she can see it from her house.

Ok, that's just pure B.S. (1)

Em Emalb (452530) | about 4 years ago | (#31701536)

So...I'm sitting there on my computer when this hot girl comes up telling me there's been a response to my first "wave"...which was "Is this thing on?". It sat there, like a wet fart on a humid day for literally two months with no responses.

What does she do? Asks me if I want to pay her to play a game with her. As if! That's just wrong, google!

(We're currently trying to level my paladin, he's sitting at level 37. Sucks. She's better than I am...and getting paid to do it!)

This is what? Like the 4th Google related April Fools posting?

Re:Google ruined april fools. (1)

Arancaytar (966377) | about 4 years ago | (#31703362)

Well, the artificial intelligence is still trying to determine what humans find "humorous". It has realized that it can learn quicker by making multiple jokes per year. Once it has processed the results, it can keep us controlled with joke-embedded memes while it works on the extermination project.

In a few years the punchline will be: "Because all the humans are DEAD! Haha!".

Hiring as many as 10 people? (2, Insightful)

If there were no Microsoft, it would be necessary for the Linux community to create one. Now that is funnier than the the joke that was posted.

Google get your act together. (1)

Am I the only one who tried to watch the YouTube video in TFA in text mode? You would think they would try to coordinate some of these...

Re:Google get your act together. (0)

You can view it TEXTp, just not using the embedded movie. Go to the Youtube site:

Re:Google get your act together. (1)

Zerth (26112) | about 4 years ago | (#31701776)

They should leave that on all year. It might even cut down on the whining from content scalpers.

Or not.

Re:Google get your act together. (1)

MHolmesIV (253236) | about 4 years ago | (#31703292)

You can watch it in text mode. Just click through to the actual youtube site to do so. Text mode doesn't work with embedded videos.

No, it's legit. I've already tested it out mysef, and it worked as advertised. Sadly, I accidentally used the new Google Docs feature that allows you to upload ANYTHING to upload myself, so now I can't see the people waving. Hmm.

Re:April 1st (2, Informative)

Locke2005 (849178) | about 4 years ago | (#31702160)

You do know the upload feature just uploads a copy, without destroying the original, don't you? Your original self is still sitting at his computer in his mom's basement. You, on the other hand, are just an online backup. Sorry to break the bad news to you.

P.S. This really hot chick just walked in to deliver a "wave" to your original self. Unfortunately, she walked right back out again before he could take advantage of the situation.

I know, same here! It made me realize I've never had a conversation with a girl on web cam that didn't, at some point, show me her tits.

Watching Slashdot try to do humor (4, Insightful)

You guys are to humor what The Net and Swordfish are to computers.

Re:Watching Slashdot try to do humor (1)

mapkinase (958129) | about 4 years ago | (#31702064)

I think the proportion of /. style of presenting user-generated content (heavily moderated submission of topics, very limited moderation of comments) and reddit style (anyone can freely submit, freely moderating everything, by moderation I mean voting) should be different for different broad subjects and humor is one of those subjects where the moderation should be up to all voters, reddit-style. I can rely more on the sense of technology of /. PTB than on their sense of humor.

Swordfish rocks. not very accurate but accuracy isn't part of escapist fun. most war movies aren't like war, romantic comedies has little bearing on my love life, Star wars has nothing to do with space exploration and computer technology in movies should get the same treatment.

configurable and themable? (1)

pydev (1683904) | about 4 years ago | (#31702366)

Wave really needed such notifications; even the Firefox plugin wasn't really all that good.

But... are these human Google Wave notifiers configurable and themable? If not, I think that's a feature that really needs to be added. And, no, I don't want to have to use a theme editor just to get the kind of Google Wave notifier I like.
