Google Announces New Google Wave "Wave" Notification

CmdrTaco posted more than 4 years ago | from the i'm-available-for-this-job dept.

Google 95

eldavojohn writes "Google has announced new Google Wave Wave Notifications where Google sends an actual person to you to notify you in real time that you have a new Google Wave update!" Word is that they hired as many as 10 people for these positions to deal with all the wave traffic.

STOP (0, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701492)

Stop with the inane April Fool's Day "joke", and I use that term loosely, posts. These aren't funny.

Re:STOP (4, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701566)

What most certainly is funny is all the people whining about how unfunny the articles are.

Re:STOP (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701622)

The volume of April 1st whiners seems incredibly high this year.

Re:STOP (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701756)

Yeah, I am sick and tired of "complainers" [zi.ma] myself. This video stuff is funny because you can't stop it. The articles are funny. Lighten up and enjoy it.

Add the following filter to Adblock: http://s.fsdn.com/aprilfools/* [fsdn.com]

Done. Enjoy your April 1 merriment (and the one or two actual stories today) without all those odd (sometimes funny, but odd) videos.

Re:STOP (1)

GameboyRMH (1153867) | more than 4 years ago | (#31702504)

Funny story: I opened a lot of Slashdot tabs in Firefox today, bogging down my work PC with all the SlashRoulette instances. This caused Firefox to crash, and then reload a billion other Slashdot tabs, bogging the browser down harder and crashing it again. On the third restart I removed fsdn.com from my NoScript whitelist.

Hahaha you got me Slashdot.

Re:STOP (0)

Limited social ability? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701728)

The people who are associated with Slashdot seem to be socially challenged. They must not only lack a sense of humor, but not have a good understanding of the nature of humor to think that those April 1 Slashdot stories are funny.

Playing video games too much tends to cause people to be mentally primitive.

Re:STOP (1)

Demonantis (1340557) | more than 4 years ago | (#31701748)

It would be more fun if they were interspersed with actual articles so you never really know which are which. Thats usually part of the challenge for an April fools jokes. But then all the joke was way to realistic posts would disappear.

Re:STOP (1)

Re:Heh, April first jokes (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701678)

When I was 16 I said to a girl I liked that I'll be coming over tonight (she lived far away, you know, we met on the internet and so on). She went all "seriously?" and scared that she needs to clean some and so on. After a while teasing her, I told her "nah I'm just kidding, totally got you!" - really smooth, because she answered that she would had taken me there, but not now that I fooled her. I had to wait half an year for a new opportunity to come before seeing her.

Not only are April fools unfunny, they can backfire good.he

Pathetic.

Less is more with the April fools jokes (5, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31701530)

You had me until the 10 people bit when everyone knows 2 maybe 3 people could handle the wave traffic.

Re:Less is more with the April fools jokes (1)

dyerto (1750266) | more than 4 years ago | (#31701886)

The number would need to be much higher than 10. This is not a problem with demand, no. It is a problem with geography. Google Wave is available to more than 10 countries. For this scheme to work, with a reasonable response time, we would need at least one or two people per country (depending on country size). Other than this impracticality, I like the idea... It would also require people to have gps tracking turned on so the Google people could find them...

Re:Less is more with the April fools jokes (1)

natehoy (1608657) | more than 4 years ago | (#31702562)

If you want to stop incredibly long journeys, I think you could get by with about 10.

One for the US, one for Canada (two nations with heaviest user base). One for South America. One for Europe (who could get to GB using the Chunnel), one for Asia, one for Africa and Madagascar, one for Australia and surrounds (Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea). Maybe one for Japan, since they probably have it integrated into their smartphones or maybe even their cerebral cortexes by now. Maybe one for Cuba and the islands in that general vicinity, who can part-time it up to Florida when retirees are "waving" the best Early Bird Specials to each other. And one floater to cover heavy demand during the short period between someone discovering it and implementing it for their project team, then discovering it's a jack of all trades that can't do any of them well enough to be useful. China will have blocked it by now, so no worries there. There's your ten.

The Arctic and Antarctic, Easter Island, the Aleutians, and various and sundry other tiny populations or islands could either hire a taxi driver as needed, or keep a subcontractor, or be covered by spare capacity from the nearest large customer base.

Michael Palin could be the floater, and make money on the side filming a new special "Waving Madly with Michael Palin".

Sarah Palin could use semaphore flags to signal Eastern Russia, since she can see it from her house.

Well, the artificial intelligence is still trying to determine what humans find "humorous". It has realized that it can learn quicker by making multiple jokes per year. Once it has processed the results, it can keep us controlled with joke-embedded memes while it works on the extermination project.

In a few years the punchline will be: "Because all the humans are DEAD! Haha!".

No, it's legit. I've already tested it out mysef, and it worked as advertised. Sadly, I accidentally used the new Google Docs feature that allows you to upload ANYTHING to upload myself, so now I can't see the people waving. Hmm.

P.S. This really hot chick just walked in to deliver a "wave" to your original self. Unfortunately, she walked right back out again before he could take advantage of the situation.

I think the proportion of /. style of presenting user-generated content (heavily moderated submission of topics, very limited moderation of comments) and reddit style (anyone can freely submit, freely moderating everything, by moderation I mean voting) should be different for different broad subjects and humor is one of those subjects where the moderation should be up to all voters, reddit-style. I can rely more on the sense of technology of /. PTB than on their sense of humor.
