Woman Creates 3-D Erotic Book For the Blind

samzenpus posted more than 4 years ago | from the is-that-a-book-in-your-pocket-or-are-you-just-happy-to-see-me dept.

Books 113

Lisa J. Murphy has written an erotic book with tactile images for that special visually impaired porn connoisseur in your life. Tactile Mind contains explicit softcore raised images, along with Braille text and photos. From the article: "A photographer with a certificate in Tactile Graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Murphy learned to create touchable images of animals for books for visually impaired children. Then she realized that there was a lack of such books for adults only. 'There are no books of tactile pictures of nudes for adults, at least the last time I looked around,' says Murphy. 'We're breaking new ground. Playboy has [an edition with] Braille wording, but there are no pictures.' She says that while we live in a culture saturated with sexual images, the blind have been 'left out.'"

This reminds me of a stupid idea I thought of once: A Braille monitor!

It really seems creepy if the blind perceive faces that way.

Or...that example might be simply a case of practical approach; recognizing that the msin reason faces are detailed in "normal" naked photos is...because leaving it that way is the easiest thing to do ;p (while here there's some sculping involved)

Re:Is that picture supposed to be erotic? (2, Insightful)

sopssa (1498795) | more than 4 years ago | (#31824982)

It really seems creepy if the blind perceive faces that way.

Eh.

Leaving aside the fact that I'm pretty sure they don't (just try touching a face and it will not "look" like that), what we perceive and look as beautiful things are just what we know or have heard of. It's wonderful you would categorize them as "creepy".

Re:Is that picture supposed to be erotic? (1)

kainino (1042936) | more than 4 years ago | (#31825204)

FTFA (don't kill me—I read the article because the picture had no nose or mouth and weird eyes, which had to have a reason):

A male torso from Tactile Mind; the Braille message is informational more than lyrical — he wears a mask, he has a muscular bare chest ...

So, it's not supposed to look or feel like a face.

But it's creepy.

Re:Is that picture supposed to be erotic? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31826358)

The sighted share diverse fetishes, some of which are mirrored by that shirtless dude wearing a balaclava, and some of which are far more creepy than any tactile picture ever could be. I don't see the big deal there.

Re:Is that picture supposed to be erotic? (1)

sznupi (719324) | more than 4 years ago | (#31825264)

That's why I used "seems" there; wondering about possibly unsettling (if they would be quite directly brought over) differences in perception. What's wrong with that?

Besides, how are you so certain? You can't just from touching your face or face of somebody who deeply trusts you (which would be the case, you don't have any "excuse" to do that to somebody who isn't quite close) - you not only know that you can go very far in this case, you also have preconcieved concept of how a face looks like.

BTW, beauty is not "just what we know or have heard of". It's an adaptation.

How does a blind person know what "sexy" means? (3, Interesting)

Dragoniz3r (992309) | more than 4 years ago | (#31825534)

I ask this question seriously, and from a psychological perspective. We learn as we grow up what the social norms of attractiveness are, do we not? Isn't that why they have meandered and oscillated many times over human history? So then how does a blind person figure out what attractive physical traits are? Uncle Bob can tell little Johnny that girls with big boobs are hot, but if Johnny can't see boobs, then how will he know what that even means*? So what would distinguish between a hot chick and an ugly chick, for a blind person? In particular, much of what makes women attractive (or not) would seem to be things that would be extremely difficult to portray in any tactile way, such as hair color and length, small features of the face/nose/mouth area, and the like. Perhaps I underestimate the sensitivity of a blind person's fingers.

Notice, I am not asking why a blind person would find these sexually arousing. I'm asking how the norms of what is and isn't hot would be established for someone with a limited sensory pool. It makes perfect sense to me that a blind man who's touched boobs before would get off on pretending he's touching boobs while stroking a curved... er... now I know why blind uncle Ted always strokes the arms of his chair like that...

* I assume, of course, that he doesn't go around feeling up everyone he meets in a brute-force attempt to uncover Uncle Bob's meaning

Re:How does a blind person know what "sexy" means? (2, Insightful)

MrCrassic (994046) | more than 4 years ago | (#31825880)

Sex is an instinctive trait. Similarly, a person's attractiveness delves deeper than the eye can see or the (conscious) mind can perceive.

Ever wonder why some dudes that are BUTT ugly manage to get with drop-dead gorgeous women? Some of those guys know how to walk, talk and even radiate qualities that attract women in ways even they don't fully understand. Pick-up artists spend most of their practice tapping these "switches" to either (a) attract/seduce as many (preferably HOT) women as possible and/or (b) compensate for areas that would normally make them unattractive to most of them (like looks, lack of money, etc.). Women, in fact, practice the same "magic;" many are trained at much earlier ages from reading popular "girlie" magazines like Cosmopolitan and Seventeen. Us guys think those pages are full of fluff; women soak it up...and it works.

I'll keep this abridged and just link to Mystery's (Eric von Marcovik) [wikipedia.org] bio. This guy is a total nut, not that physically attractive and way the fuck detached from reality...but he can do practically whatever he wants with practically any woman he wants, anywhere0...and make them like it! (Disclaimer: I was "involved" in that community for a few months two years ago in the quest to fix a lot of personal social issues. No, I did not do the boot camps: way too much money. Yes, the basics did wonders for me.)

So what does this have to do with blind people (or people close to it)? Even though they, at worst case, may not "follow social norms" when it comes to physical attractiveness, that doesn't mean they don't know what "sexiness" is since the perception of "sexiness" is much deeper than our understanding can comprehend...

Obligatory example: My former girlfriend of four years (as in first, not only) had a friend who was blind, but was a total sexaholic. This girl LOVED having sex...but she was completely blind. Example deux: I had a brief stint with a woman who was almost completely blind as well, and she was way hornier than I was.

I know this might shock a slashdotter (1)

SmallFurryCreature (593017) | more than 4 years ago | (#31828280)

Uncle Bob can tell little Johnny that girls with big boobs are hot, but if Johnny can't see boobs, then how will he know what that even means*?

This might shock you, but some people do manage to touch boobies in their life time. (They are called girls, doesn't seem fair really).

So they can feel that big boobies are hotter. The extra friction when moving around heats them up. That is what you mean by hotter right?

Sex on slashdot, the king of oxymorons.

There is a reason they call blindness a handicap. It is not just that they are too lazy to open their eyes. I can't see three dimensions. I get by quite well, but I don't go to see 3D movies because then I feel handicapped. It is just one thing that one learns to live without.

SmallFurryCreature (593017) | more than 4 years ago | (#31828298)

As a blind person this would never work for me... (0)

First of all the only thing I've used Braille for in the passed 15 years is graphs in math. I'd be to busy trying to figure what the hell kind of equation has that many curves to jack off. If I got passed that after whacking off and covering the page in sperm two or three times the dots and pictures would be to damn sticky to read.

Whoa, so you can really rub one off to (1)

someone help the author - needs a geek! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31827530)

humm the author desperately needs some /. assistance - in the article they say she's taking photos, then hand modeling clay over the top of the image which is then reated to become a master for the book plates. Taking some 40-50 hrs per image. /. solution:
stereo photos or even the diy 3d scanner, some software and a 3d printer and she'd be done in an hr or two.

geesh

Maybe a market for landscapes, animal/plant identification books etc for the blind?
Art books using textures for colour mapping? (smooth-rough for saturation and maybe nap/nap directions for colour wheel?)

You know what else is lacking? (1)

Audio porn. I don't mean pornographic audiobooks. I mean something like this famous holophonic recording: http://www.holophonic.ch/archivio/testaudio/voce.mp3 [holophonic.ch] Except not just sexy but explicitly sexual.

A photographer with a certificate in Tactile Graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

I hate to poke fun at these serious handicaps, but does one really need to be certified to be able to turn image outlines into crude heightmaps ? Do the people making those raised letters on book covers hold a degree in tactile typography ?

FFS, we did this sort of thing in kindergarten. Chicky needs to get a real job. You want tactile porn ? Go to a strip club. Even blind people can enjoy tits in their face.

FWIW, the Braille caption of the picture says "m]ale torso in a cold cement". (The "m" is not in the picture frame and I'm inferring it.)
