Steve Jobs Recommends Android For Fans of Porn

CmdrTaco posted more than 4 years ago | from the only-flashers-own-trenchcoats dept.

hansamurai writes "After being asked about the App Store's recent ban on 'sexy apps,' Steve Jobs responded, 'We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone. You know, there's a porn store for Android, you can download nothing but porn. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. Ready Pitchforks! (1, Funny)

MobileTatsu-NJG (946591) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926110)

Alright, men! Let's wave our pitchforks, complain about all the Apple news, and make sure Slashdot serves as many ads as possible in the process!

Look, if you don't want to read that, why don't you, you know, just ignore it. Or tell slashdot not to show you Apple news?

Re:Ready Pitchforks! (5, Insightful)

I think it's better worded like this:

'After being asked about the App Store's recent ban on "freedom to use your property as you see fit," Steve Jobs responded, "We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep freedom away from the iPhone. Folks who want freedom can buy an Android phone. You know, there's a lot of freedom for Android, you can use it anyway you want to, you paid for the hardware, it's yours. You can download porn, your kids can download porn, it's totally free and up to you to do what you want. That's a place we don't want to go, so we're not going to go there." Apps such as Playboy's and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition are still available on the App Store, however, as they come from "more reputable companies."'

We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone

I wish some people would take some responsibility and stop buying Apple products because they support the immoral values of billionaires. Stooping to popular opinion and Fandom usually, at the most has led to mediocrity, and sometimes lynch mobs. If Steve Jobs thinks that sex is immoral then I hope he doesn't engage in it himself.

The point being that more ads being served means more iPhone stories.

For about ten minutes before customers realized that they could still get porn using Safari and that iTunes gladly lets them transfer their porn videos to the iPhone.

Re:In other news... (4, Funny)

exabrial (818005) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926226)

Is there porn on the itunes store? Or are you using an illegal method to transfer licensed content to a playback medium not covered by the origanal license?

Re:In other news... (1)

mikael_j (106439) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926294)

I'm sure there's plenty of porn out there that's perfectly legal to transfer to a mobile device. Hell, format shifting from a DVD is likely to be legal in most countries (although for some reason I'm assuming it's a felony in the US).

Re:In other news... (1)

alen (225700) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926546)

there is a firefox plugin to download videos from youtube that works on a lot of porn sites. and you can use handbrake which is free to convert to the native iphone/touch format for better battery efficiency. and a lot of the tube sites work natively in safari.

and for wife proof surfing there are apps like private browser which wipes all the history of the session. kind of like IE/FF private browsing

Re:In other news... (4, Informative)

MBGMorden (803437) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926702)

Ripping a DVD for your own use is legal. DECRYPTING it with an unauthorized backup tool is not thanks to the DMCA, but the vast majority of porn DVD's have no copy protection, in which case the DMCA doesn't come into play.

Not to mention that there are sites that already cater to this. www.videobox.com for example even has an "iPod" option on their video downloads that downloads a MPEG4 file already optimized for placeback on an iPod, that will import straight into iTunes. Completely legal, and works fine.

Re:In other news... (5, Insightful)

JWSmythe (446288) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926518)

I was going to say, that's the best marketing the Android could have hoped for. "It does everything ours does *AND* can do porn." The adult industries have been a driving force for centuries, and Apple making a pseudo-clean environment isn't going to change that at all.

Re:In other news... (3, Insightful)

Monkeedude1212 (1560403) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926520)

You know, we joke about it, but whatever the porn industry backs usually ends up being the winner in format wars.

Android Sales Already Doubling Every Quarter (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31926638)

Every quarter for the past year Android has been doubling its marketshare.

Back in January Android phones were selling at a rate of some 22 million phones worldwide a year. That number has to be much larger by now that another quarter has passed. Would not be surprised if Android was up in the 40 million a year or so range by now.

With Apple's cellphone marketshare flat lining and starting to decline it shouldn't be any shock that Jobs is apoplectically shitting his panties over the massive success of Android.

assantisz (881107) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926180)

And iPhone users (including children) don't have access to porn? Last time I checked (guilty as charged!) there are iPhone specific streaming sites for porn. Instead of going to the app store all they have to open up Safari and google for the goodies.

But Apple does not provide them (1)

SuperKendall (25149) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926478)

Last time I checked (guilty as charged!) there are iPhone specific streaming sites for porn.

Sure, but they don't come through Apple. Any application is sold through Apple, so they are at least marginally responsible for content.

But as you noted, it really doesn't matter since the internet itself offers porn in vast quantities.

Re:But Apple does not provide them (4, Insightful)

mwvdlee (775178) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926620)

Are those android porn stores owned by Google?
Personally I wouldn't care if they did, but somehow I doubt they do.

Re:But Apple does not provide them (5, Insightful)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31926710)

Nope. Google's Market does not allow porn. Steve is just being an asshole because you can go download and install Android apps from wherever. And somehow the worst kind of app is porn. Not, I dunno, malicious apps that steal your passwords.

The anti-porn rhetoric from the head of a politically liberal, gay-friendly company is pretty weird, to say the least.

He is really being a dick there. There's a "porn store" for the iPhone as well, called "Mobile Safari". If anything, the prices are lower.

However, if he is going to be an asshole he should have gone just a little further... Something to the effect of "And the inferior multitouch support won't bother you nearly as much if you are always using your phone one-handed..."

Any other recommendations, Steve? (5, Funny)

The internet is for porn (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31926200)

It looks like Apple will have to disable all internet connectivity in their products in order to fulfill their moral responsibility.

Re:The internet is for porn (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#31926404)

I'm not supposed to be posting this, but, that's actually one of the main features of IPhone OS 5.0.
Each web page will have a special xml configuration file available that the OS will download, allowing the user to be redirected to a corresponding Apple-approved app at the App Store. The user may then download the app to get the corresponding functionality of the website, but with a much better user experience, since the app is running locally, and has been blessed by Apple.

Re:Sure Steve (0)

Altus (1034) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926560)

At least with safari apple isnt actually selling the porn and arent actually taking a cut of it. If you look at something that is extremely offensive (or even illegal in your country, check the laws in the UK) on safari on your iPhone, apple isnt getting a cut of that. If its on their app store people could get very pissed about it.

Re:Sure Steve (1)

MBGMorden (803437) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926778)

Let's get rid of Safari too while we're at it.

I'm sure the thought of an Apple provided internet a la AOL of old has crossed their minds. Wouldn't be awesome if all the pages you were given access to had to be reviewed and approved by Apple!

Sound ridiculous, but I see it as a very real possibility in a few years.

Actually, they just rejected a reportedly extremely nice iPad application that taught kids how to program [wired.com] , called "Scratch", based on Alan Kay's ideas from ages ago. It looks like a fantastic idea, but aparently violates their terms and condition, as the kids can 'create programs'. They're not really thinking of the children.

I won't buy one (1)

wiredog (43288) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926766)

Because I want a phone that is really good at making phone calls. Like my Motorola V3, on Verizon, which gets signal in places where iPhones (and Droids) don't.

Re:I don't need (4, Insightful)

mweather (1089505) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926730)

You do realise that Walmart's censorship practices influence the content of music, movies, and video games right? You just gave an extremely good example of why companies who control a huge chunk of a given market acting as moral police is a bad thing.

Re:I don't need (1, Insightful)

Altus (1034) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926784)

And guess what, there isn't a damned thing you can do about it. Doesn't that just chap your ass? (or would that be too porny?)

Steve Jobs responded, "We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone. "

Well, I don't see that porn is particularly harmful to children, especially compared to the violence in media and games sold on the iPhone, so I don't know why one would be a moral imperative and the other would not. I actually think this is marketing, designed to appeal to parents who want their kids kept safe from the evils of... umm... boobies?

But that's okay. If he's recommending an Android phone, I'll probably take him up on it when I purchase a smartphone.

Wanting to prevent your children from seeing pornography and wanting to prevent your children from seeing breasts are two completely different things.

No, actually they're two related things, especially in the context of iPhones since any boobies on the iPhone are going to be considered pornographic by a large percentage of the population. I guess I don't understand what you're trying to get at in context of this discussion. My best guess is you like breasts but your son is gay and you don't approve and don't want him looking at wee wee's on the phone you're paying for. Either that or you're going off on a weird tangent.

It would be nice if that would work, but there's a huge market right now for phones bought for minors and the purchasers often don't want the phone owner to be able to choose. A smarter move would be for Google to leverage their vast knowledge of the Web to start a ratings system for Web pages, Create a setup so phones can be locked to a particular level of rating for Web pages and apps, and then demonstrate how iPhones let kids look at any creepy fetish porn site but Android provide better controls.

Folks who want porn can just use safari and browse to it like a normal person. You know, there's plenty of porn available on the iPhone, and plenty of gay porn hookup apps that soccer moms won't even notice. You can download porn via the browser, or any number of "respectable" apps from companies that make us a lot of money like Playboy and Sports Illustrated , your kids can download porn on their iPhones faster than we can attempt to block it, so we just come up with some lame ass story for the soccer mom's and they buy it because they are fucking pathetically stupid. Re:American pornophobia (1)

ircmaxell (1117387) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926526)

Quite simple. Parents are afraid that they would actually need to parent their children. So instead, they turn to people like Jobs to try to restrict everything of what they consider moral questionability so that they don't need to...

Re:American pornophobia (4, Insightful)

eln (21727) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926650)

I don't know about anyone else, but my primary fear is that my kids would see it and tell one of their friends at school about it. This then gets overheard by a parent with a huge stick up their ass who goes and tells anyone she can find that I'm letting my children watch porn, and before I know it I'm on the sex offender registry and my kids have a new family because this whole country always has a huge kneejerk overreaction whenever sex and children are mentioned in the same paragraph.

In short, it's not that I don't think my kids could handle porn, it's that everyone else couldn't handle the idea that my kids were exposed to porn.

Re:American pornophobia (1)

Altus (1034) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926708)

yea, its just America. Its not like the UK recently passed any draconian measures limiting the types of porn you are allowed to possess. And its certainly not an issue in other countries like India where 2 people kissing in a mainstream movie can be a huge media event.

Yea, its just America.

"We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone."

Apple's only moral responsibility is to let their users do whatever they feel like, and they have failed.

The "Apple cult" image tossed around as a joke and an insult is becoming more and more true every day. You can't simply buy a device from Apple - you have to buy their device, their software, their platform, and their tastes, desires and morals too, and once you do, you can't separate any of them. This isn't vendor lock-in, it's religion.

Re:Getting scary (1)

wiredog (43288) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926712)

"let their users do whatever they feel like," vs "stable platform". Jailbroken iPhones, which let their users do whatever they like, tend to be more crash prone, at least in my experience. So do Android and Windows Mobile. I don't personally know anyone who's crashed their iPhone unless they've jailbroken it. I do know that it's annoying to have your phone crash when you are trying to make a phone call.

Caveat: Android and WinMobile are stable if you only run apps developed by Google or MS.

Caveat 2: I have a Motorola V3. It's great for making phone calls.

No. It isn't. Their moral responsibility is to maximize shareholder profits which they have succeeded in doing, beyond expectations. They have decided to not appeal to fringe geeks and nerds but to instead appeal to the affluent mass market in order to meet their moral responsibility. That moral mass market would prefer if "porn" was not readily available on their consumer electronic devices.

_YOU_ may not like that but Apple's shareholders, to whom Apple answers, likes it quite a bit.

Didn't Sony pretty much take the exact same stance with their Betamax format? How did that work out for them?

The Chinese Apple. (4, Interesting)

Apple has a moral responsibility to provide only high quality apps, and sees that it is necessary to forbid anyone from using their iPhone if they do not abide by their rules; This includes banning porn, and politically sensitive matters. If they only provided high quality apps the app store wouldn't have a billion apps it in. It would have about 200.

Walmart (1, Informative)

For anyone who's about to bitch and moan about Apple closing their app store to questionable apps ("porn"), and I know that list is long, ask yourself if you have a problem with Walmart dictating what products can and cannot appear on their store shelves. If you are ok with Walmart having enormous control over what appears in their stores, to the point that content providers will make Walmart-friendly CDs (for example), then feel free to bitch about Apple doing exactly the same thing. At the very least you'll be consistent in your view that stores everywhere should carry everything just because it exists, regardless of whatever business plan they may have and customer base they may wish to appeal to. Otherwise, keep your complaints to yourself because every damn store on the planet does this. Walmart, which has probably the broadest selection of products, doesn't carry everything, just because it exists, so why should Apple? Just because someone wants to build it and just because some people want to buy it doesn't qualify something to appear in a company's store...

Yeah. I'm grumpy. Deal with it.

Jobs is making porn -he's really starting to blow. (1, Insightful)

jbeach (852844) | more than 4 years ago | (#31926528)

I have an iPhone and a MacBook. But Jobs is increasingly pissing me off.

I gotta jailbreak my phone that I bought just so a) I can put the music on it that I want, b) it can't be turned off remotely or apps uninstalled without my say-so, c) it can have a video camera without a $$ upgrade - that's all bad enough. But I knew that going in.

But the way Jobs is going about deciding what CONTENT I get to have? WTF is that?

Sign me up for an Android when my contract with AT&T is done. That is, if I don't just switch the iPhone to Verizon anyway - another attempt to control my choices that Jobs can blow me for.

Just as an FYI, you won't be able to bring your iPhone to Verizon because each network operates on a completely different frequency. If/when iPhone goes to VZW, it'll have a different antenna than the ATT one.

No, no, no. Apple is simply saying they will not sell apps that contain porn. You are free to find it yourself and view it via Safari or install via iTunes. Please don't confuse the issue.

Historically those who have tried failed. Perhaps because those who try to control free speech are doomed to fail? More likely because no amount of Apple technology can dominate the male biological imperative. This is either a big mistake on their part or they'll be eating their words soon.
