umm, it's vietnam era... and you'd be a bit hard pressed to claim that any of the COD games have much in common with counterstrike or rainbow six.

Predictions (5, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32064490)

This game will:

* have at least half of the playable characters dead by the end of the plot

* have a "shocking" sequence for that extra controversial touch

* not have any dedicated servers

* have a multiplayer section with unbearable lag and bugs exploited within the first hours after the release

* still be most successful game of the year

Re:Predictions (4, Interesting)

PopeRatzo (965947) | more than 4 years ago | (#32065832)

the shooter-on-rails sections

This is my biggest complaints about the direction that COD has taken.

I'd much rather see a game with the same great mechanics but more open, like Far Cry or Far Cry 2. Let me make decisions about where to go and what to do.

That "on the rails" experience made the "controversial" scene in Modern Warfare even more morally twisted. Civilians were sent at you like aliens in Space Invader and all you could do was keep walking and keep shooting. I found that more objectionable than the content itself.

The best games give you decisions to make, not just buttons to push.

Re:Predictions (5, Interesting)

KDR_11k (778916) | more than 4 years ago | (#32065944)

Actually you didn't have to shoot in that scene, I know because in the German version it gives you an instant game over if you kill any civilian.

Re:Predictions (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32067766)

KDR is correct. I went through the entire scene and never fired once. You can skip the scene but if you don't you still do not have to shoot anyone.

Re:Predictions (1)

ducomputergeek (595742) | more than 3 years ago | (#32069324)

The last FPS tactical shoot I actually enjoyed is a tie between Rainbow 6: Rouge Spear and Ghost Recon 1. After Ubi bought Red Storm, the games seemed more and more like arcade shoot 'em ups rather than the experience of planning an attack before going into a mission.

I stopped buying video games because no one made games I wanted to play anymore. Last game I bought was Falcon 4: Allied Force.

Re:Predictions (0)

You should try the Operation Flashpoint (Arma) series, or Combat Mission: Shock Force.

Most sad part about this is most of it will true with a DRM to boot. My money is on they will unplug their MW2 servers or make them so crappy that everyone will have to get this game. God bless not having dedicated servers.

That's multiplayer, though. Not a storyline with Good Democracy-Bringing Americans vs Bad Countries Fully Inhabited By Terrorists.

That said, what I'm really looking forward to isn't a game where you play, say, some Arab guy defending his homeland against the American invasion. Nah, let the player be an American soldier, just stop fucking portraying it as a race towards liberated flower-bearing locals!

I don't think Bethesda has the guts to make it, but a war FPS based on the U.S. invasion and annexation of Canada [wikia.com] in Fallout universe could be interesting.

Re:Bleh. (1)

Jedi Alec (258881) | more than 3 years ago | (#32070326)

You know...I've been thinking about doing a remake of Jagged Alliance 2 for a while now, with a different storyline and a style of warfare geared more towards guerilla and less to conquering and holding territory.

A small banana republic defending itself against an american oppressor...might make for a nice change of pace.

Treyarch? (0)

Why must every great Call of Duty be followed by a relatively mediocre one?

Re:Treyarch? (1)

Nerdfest (867930) | more than 4 years ago | (#32064876)

Because they alternate studios for the COD series. It's the FPS equivalent of the Star Trek odd/even rule.

Re:Treyarch? (1)

KahabutDieDrake (1515139) | more than 4 years ago | (#32065662)

COD4 was a masterpiece. As far as multilayer shooters go, it basically set the bar. Previously, CounterStrike held this honor. Before everyone starts screaming, go look at how many people are playing whatever game you are going to bring up, and then go find out that CS 1.6 still has more players, 10 years later. Granted, it's obvious today that COD4 isn't going to have the staying power that CS had, that doesn't detract from the fact that it is one of the best shooters in recent memory. FAR surpassing the other COD games, and nearly every other shooter.

The real problem here isn't the games, or the studios, it's the consoles forcing a model onto the PC world that doesn't work here. That should be the point of the discussion. Because I am fairly certain that all new COD games from here on out are going to be focused on the console market, as COD6 /MW2 was.

Re:Treyarch? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32066418)

Totally agree; the root of all the complaints is consolization, and I think that trend is only going to continue. Obviously some genres just don't translate well to the console (RTS games in particular, but others as well), but the numbers don't lie; console game sales are increasing and PC game sales are decreasing. PC is still doing relatively well today, but I'm not sure how long that's going to last. As the studios continue to whine about piracy and the console market continues to expand, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them slowly began pulling out of the shrinking PC market in the next 5 years or so.

RE: CoD4 a masterpiece (1)

King_TJ (85913) | more than 4 years ago | (#32068292)

Agreed about CoD 4. As a Mac OS X user, I find myself playing CoD 4 quite often, to this day. Partially, that's because I own the native OS X version and there aren't a whole lot of good game options for native OS X out there. But it's ALSO largely because it's a good enough game to have that kind of "staying power". To this day, I keep finding custom servers to connect to that download all sorts of modified maps and games. Many are taken from mods done for earlier 3D shooter titles (like Unreal Tournament) -- but they're still just as fun, if not better than ever, on a more modern game title.

(Just last week, I played a "freeze tag" version of a Team Deathmatch game on a custom CoD 4 server. It was a LOT of fun, and I wasn't expecting it. When you shot an enemy, you froze them in a block of ice. Then they were only able to sit and observe the game going on around them, unless/until a team-mate was able to run up to them and hold down a button to thaw the ice (took a few seconds to fully melt the ice too - so there was a risk of getting shot while in the middle of a rescue).

With the restrictions on Internet multiplayer in the newer CoD titles, all of this is completely "out the window" and makes me uninterested in buying them -- at least at anywhere near their asking prices.

Because they want to have CoDs coming out yearly (ask Kotick why) but they couldn't make Infinity Ward make one per year? Of course now IW isn't going to make any more CoD games (well, a company by that name might but almost none of the MW2 staff remains) so it doesn't really matter.

Slow news day eh' ?

Re:Nice one (1)

Svippy (876087) | more than 4 years ago | (#32064978)

While yeah, this story might seem rather pointless, it does come in a context that seems important. Well, interesting at least.

The whole controversy between Activision and Infinity Ward is hilarious at best. Also terrible, but hey.

Now I wanna stress that I am not really a fan of Call of Duty, I liked the first one, but then... it became kinda meh, because even when the first one was out, the Second World War was already getting used to the limit. I guess people really love that war. But I suppose it made sense. It had excitement, deception, treason, spying, first real airborne warfare, crazy leaders, ideologies, a Europe in changing and the setting for a new world order. Blimey!

But despite all that, I still find the First World War much more interesting, not for the war itself, but for the whole political affairs behind it. It was complicated shit. In WW2, some guy just wanted some revenge over some other war because some people did something. Woosh. What excitement.

But I digress. People have been wondering if Infinity Ward, in its current sorry state, would even be able to provide a new title of its best selling franchise. Sure it would, Activision would force it upon it. But I will make a quick prediction. It's going to suck.

Now give me a real game, and here I am talking about Victoria 2 which is coming out this Late Summer/Early Autumn.

Even if this were to be the best CoD game in the franchise, I will not give any further economic support to a corporation that so easily and freely violates the contracts they have with their employees. I also will no longer support corporations that no longer listen to customers and give them what they want in a product(MW2 was just one of the many examples). I quit purchasing EA games after Ubisoft started screwing customers with the "constant internet connection" fiasco.

This is a really sad time, as there are some good games on the horizon, but they are backed by ethically corrupt corporations.

This is really pissing me off. This game launches 2 days before Remembrance Day. MW2 launched the day before. I have more than enough respect for veterans and people serving right now, that I'm not going to respect any company that employs such cheap and tasteless marketing tactics. Even if it is the best game ever - they will never see one cent from me for this game nor will I ever play it.

Should they decide to move the release date, I might consider it at some future point. I realize that it is being released Christmas so there is some logical reasoning. It would be welcome to hear from the publisher exactly why this particular date was chosen to launch the game.

Indeed, and note how anti-war protests in U.S. were also driven by the fact that U.S. soldiers fighting with Vietnam were draftees, not volunteers.

Really? You're going to avoid a game based *solely* on its release date, which you perceive to be some kind of cheap marketing ploy? It is, but that is beside the point. You are aware that Veterans Day weekend is a huge shopping and social event, right? Somehow I doubt you would refuse to buy a car from a dealership who participates in a Veterans Day weekend sale (though perhaps you would refrain from purchasing it during the sale, which is also just as pointless). Historically the Call of Duty series has seen releases in late October and early-to-mid November, so it's not like this is anything new. It doesn't have anything to do with respect, and I think you are just being too sensitive.

And the world will stand still in anticipation as these leaders of the gaming world release another of their ground-breaking Call of Duty games. This game is sure to push the envelope of the first person shooter genre of videogaming with its amazing new features:
  • Crosshair (patent pending) - In Call of Duty: Black Ops, players will enjoy the revolutionary new crosshair feature, unseen by any FPS game to this date.
  • Enemies that hide (USPTO D772719) - For the first time EVER enemies will duck and hide behind boxes, sandbags, and other cover!
  • Realism - Because we know real-life isn't real enough!
  • A full-featured single player game - Experience an unprecedented 5 hours of gameplay in the new Call of Duty: Black Ops! Travel through ONE tileset and fight ONE type of enemy in the expansive and immersive new world that looks and is the exact same as our previous game.
  • AntiSkidRow (tm) DRM - With an always on DRM system you can rest easy knowing that the evil terrorist pirates pedophiles are not undermining the American Way Of Life. (note: all DRM servers will be down for scheduled maintenance starting on November 9th. Downtime unknown).
  • Downloadable content - Unluck multiplayer, tactical nuke launcher, achievements, a rootkit, much more from the XBox live store! No downloads are required since this content is already ON YOUR GAME DISC.

I don't know about you, but I'm pre-ordering my copy of Call of Duty: Go Fuck Yourself today!

If you announce it to the world.

No, no,your interpretation is not correct (3, Funny)

I can see why you would assume this is a game about covert action, but in reality, it's about combat in total darkness.

They saved a ton of time and money on the graphics.

Well, it's politically correct. Call of Duty: Shootin' Dark People for Oil was just the working title.

Is Treyarch actually making a game this time? (1)

nataflux (1733716) | more than 4 years ago | (#32065684)

Or is it just going to be one of those copy and paste deals where they reuse the engine that IW coded and just reskin the game? I think the latter is more likely.

The later, of course. You wouldn't want Kotick to risk his investors money into a game that may contain innovation and possibly fail?

Hidden Message? (1)

Black Ops?

What do they do? Hidden things like killing rebellious developers? You know what I'm talking about.
