I really hate things trying to make babies look cute by acting like adults in some ways. This is like the worst commercials ever made -- the etrade commercials -- on crack.

rwv (1636355) | more than 4 years ago | (#32376326)

And this is the worst Slashdot story that has be posted to the front page in a long time.

Re:Lame (1)

Max Romantschuk (132276) | more than 4 years ago | (#32376864)

Yeah, I don't really get the idle section. There are tons of good sites for material of this kind. I come to slashdot for the tech stuff and discussions. Also, when using the new index I haven't even found a way to turn the idle section off... just look at the amount of comments on idle stories, can't we just collectively admit this isn't what slashdot is good at at let it die now? ;)

Re:Lame (4, Insightful)

Dude, if you don't like it, filter it out. It isn't that hard.

Re:Lame (1)

So everyone has to take a minute out of their day to block him?

Wouldn't it be better to not post this crap?

Re:Lame (3, Informative)

netsavior (627338) | more than 4 years ago | (#32377600)

2 seconds out of one day to block all idle for the rest of eternity.
Click the "edit" icon on the "Idle" section of your sidebar, then click the "hide" button.

Re:Lame (1)

Max Romantschuk (132276) | more than 4 years ago | (#32378342)

THANKS! :)

Why that setting has to be different from the way to block idle when using the old style index is beyond me.

Then again, that's why we have both coders and user interface people where I work... ;)

Re:Lame (1)

mwvdlee (775178) | more than 4 years ago | (#32377834)

It takes more time for you to read this reply than it would have taken to filter it.

Re:Lame (1)

optimus2861 (760680) | more than 4 years ago | (#32377724)

Stories can't be filtered out of the RSS feed, nor can you even tell what section they're under if you're using a Firefox live bookmark.

Re:Lame (1)

everynerd (1252610) | more than 4 years ago | (#32378252)

Exactly. Idle should, by default, never appear in the front page stream.

Re:Lame (1)

the adblock filter for hiding elements containing the word 'kdawson' is pretty effective

Re:Lame (1)

Max Romantschuk (132276) | more than 4 years ago | (#32377890)

How? The new style index doesn't seem to care that I have deselected idle.

Re:Lame (1)

Better to flame it as it deserves. Filtration isn't feedback.

Of course not, but Slashdot must know how annoying this babyshit is. Think of it as negative feedback.

Normally I have no time for all the cynics who rail on Idle. But for once I have to say that Idle really has hit a new low. I can't condone this tripe on the front page and neither should anyone else.

Re:Lame (1)

rwv (1636355) | more than 4 years ago | (#32378318)

I must admit, the editors of Slashdot have done a good job filtering the irrelevant Idle stories from the front page over the last few months. I think maybe 20% of the Idle stories on the front page are actually interesting enough to warrant a click. And I'll even say that it's nice to see "Idle" and know that I can let my brain go on vacation for 15 minutes when one of those stories that piques my interest does come up.

It's essentially the same thing as people who dress up their pets. It only looks amusing to the owners (read: parents) who have an investment in that being.

On second thought, most dogs are actually far more interesting than a (retarded by comparison) human baby.

Re:Lame (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32377736)

Hey, some of us don't do it to "look amusing". Some of us put a coat on our dog in the winter because we live in the bloody cold north and have a short haired breed that originates in the desert. Some of us put boots on our dog in the winter because otherwise she gets blisters on her paws from walking on the ice (again, we live in the bloody cold north), and besides, we don't want wet paw prints all over the house after she returns from her walk. And some of us put sunglasses on our dog in the summertime because she has a degenerative eye condition that requires UV protection to keep her from going blind.

The sunglasses in particular cause many people to laugh when we walk past, and for some reason it also causes a few, mostly grumpy old men, to scowl, presumably because they assume we're just trying to be cute. We're not. We'd just rather have a dog who looks silly than a blind dog.

Re:Lame (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32380024)

Cute story. :) I don't refute that there are legitimate reasons! I knew someone with a disabled dog, attached to a rear-end wheelchair. And it would probably be considered a crime to have a naked baby in the snow...

But the thing is, for every 1 example like yours, there are 40 more "kitten mittens" [youtube.com] ....

Ah! You've been spammed with something similar to this... THERE's your problem. The only regular exposure I have to those ads is you people, propagating their brand capitalization of your own free will. I just lol'd at the terrorist bunnies and thought the production values were sharp without cringing at the memory of spam at the first sign of a CGI'd baby.

Wait... I thought those television CGI babies talked? I remember that because it annoyed me.

I liked the video. I thought it was funny. But even if I hadn't, if I took the time to complain about all the things on /., or anywhere else, I thought were pointless, I would have any time to do anything but whine.

I disagree. Slashdot editors need to be free to try new things, experiment, see what works and what doesn't; however, idle shit needs to stay idle, and if you think the editors have messed up, you should give them the needed feedback.

Re:What the fuck??? (1)

jbeaupre (752124) | more than 4 years ago | (#32376816)

What I said in the title, WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!

You see, there is a very popular movie sequel out this summer called Iron Man 2 based on a comic book of the same name. It's about a rich guy who builds a suit that flies and beats up bad guys.

In an attempt to parody the movie, some people replaced "Man" with "Baby" and made a short clip that resembles the movie in many ways, including the suit and fighting bad guys.

But with a baby.

If you are still confused, try google.

Re:What the fuck??? (0)

What I said in the title, WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!

What he said. Seriously, why does this make the frontpage on /.? Some fucking revolting parasite. Now what? Should we all go "AWWWwwww"?

At least "This video is not available in your country". I guess censorship has its benefits. One of these days I wouldn't even miss /. if they keep this up.

Garbage! (1)

MaWeiTao (908546) | more than 4 years ago | (#32376834)

I hate this garbage with a passion. I guess I'm supposed to believe it's cute, but it just looks awkward and creepy. A baby is cute because it does baby things, not because it runs around doing things an adult would do. This is even worse than those obnoxious Etrade commercials but admittedly not quite as bad as Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2.

Re:Sense of humor = 0 (4, Insightful)

rotide (1015173) | more than 4 years ago | (#32377610)

This site isn't about funny video clips someone found. There are tons of sites devoted to compiling funny video clips.

This "article" was nothing more than kdawson enjoying a video and posting it to the front page. There was no commentary/summary included besides "When Iron Baby wants O's, Iron Baby gets O's.". This tells me nothing about it. This tells me nothing about why it's on the page. I have no information as to why it's _any_ type of "news".

This front page "article" was nothing more than what I typically find in a humorous work email where a co-worker found a video he thinks I might enjoy.

Slashdot, last I checked, was about news or something resembling it. It's about intelligent (at least respective to other sites) discussion about the article/summary/information/technology. Slashdot is not about posting a cute video you want to share with people.

If you want to do that, that's fine, but find a "news" angle with it. Maybe this was made by a college kid with free software. Maybe it's a project to raise awareness about something, I don't know. But if the editor merely wants to post a video with the text "When Iron Baby wants O's, Iron Baby gets O's.", submit it to Ebaumsworld or another "joke" site.

We're "grumpy" because this was a sheer and utter waste on Slashdot. Ya, Slashdot can be considered a waste of time on someones scale of relevancy to life, I get that. But Slashdot is a site we go to to learn, not have "cute" videos pushed to the front page. The problem is that now we have precedent that a cute enough video with no summary will be front page material. Why not cut to the chase and just have every other "article" be a funny picture, say a lolcat that kdawson found amusing and then later they can put up the video of the redneck rollercoaster [youtube.com] because they thought that was hilarious.

Oh, I found a funny picture on failblog [wordpress.com] , that should be front page too!

Re:Stup The Hell Up, Haters (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32378286)

telling someone to stop polluting the comment section whilst telling someone they don't have to participate is not hypocritical. you have tools at your disposal to filter out these stories (except from the RSS feed). There is no filter for stupid comments other than filtering out what *OTHER* people think are stupid comments. It's really not quite the same. For you to call it hypocritical is either you knowingly trying to justify certain actions that he called someone out on (which he's kinda right about... if you don't like idle, don't waste time with it) OR logic isn't your strong suit.

or you're a troll who's just trying to annoy people... which we'll be able to gather from your response if you have one.

Re:Stup The Hell Up, Haters (1)

pudge (3605) | more than 4 years ago | (#32378496)

telling someone to stop polluting the comment section whilst telling someone they don't have to participate is not hypocritical.

Correct.

However, telling someone to not whine, while whining; telling them to not watch and comment something they don't like, while reading and commenting on something they don't like; etc. ... that obviously is hypocritical. Let's be adults and not pretend otherwise, mmmmkay?

if you don't like idle ...

I never implied, in any way whatsoever, I didn't like idle. Indeed, I read idle often, and thus it is entirely analagous to the comments. I can't know a particular idle story/video/link/etc. will be dumb until I've read/watched it.

Nor did I even imply I didn't like this particular story. What I said is that I didn't like the movie the story linked to. I think the story is fine, as it gives me the opportunity to say how much I hate the movie.

The little movie is technically proficient, and of very good quality. But it's DUMB and ANNOYING. Babies doing adult things is stupid. Look Who's Talking is the most evil film of all time because it gave us talking babies and the rebirth of John Travolta.

Wow, you just regurgitated his post back you him. That's bloody brilliant. Your literary skills must be astounding. So, are you reading "Dick and Jane" yet, or is that still to hard for you? Oh, and I suggest you look up "thoughtful opinion" because I don't think you know what it means. Maybe the words are big.

"Brilliant" is the wrong word. "Sufficient" is the correct one.

What is with our society and our baby-worship?

I logged in just for the reason that I want to block kdawson and idle. How can I do this?

Baby Haters (2, Funny)

I see a lot of baby hating going on here. I think it's cuz it reminds slashdotters how babies are made and how they don't do that activity. So chill and remember: The babies of today will bury you tomorrow.

I love Idle. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32377462)

Why do I love idle? Its their one chance to get back at all you retards. Watching you all rage because of the "pointless posts" is hilarious. If I was posting stories I'd purposefully find as many of these stories as possible just to watch the nerd rage.

Always remember: Nerd rage is the funniest rage. Rage on nerdlings, rage on!

TOTALLY not "news for nerds" (1)

and certainly not "stuff that matters"

But definitely well-done.

Amazing (1)

The short film is directed by Patrick Boivin [wikipedia.org] , and it seems to have nothing to do with the original movie. It is amazing how a small team can make such high quality film that look almost the same as the real movie.

Somebody did this in their spare time? I say pretty impressive, even if it is silly. The comments would probably be more favorable if it was Jedi Baby, or Star Trek Baby.

Production quality (2, Insightful)

hitnrunrambler (1401521) | more than 4 years ago | (#32378876)

ok so it IS a joke without a punchline and another weird-baby thing... but this is not a baby's face plastered on existing scenes.

This is very impressive production quality.

College Project? (1)

dogsolitude_uk (1403267) | more than 4 years ago | (#32379128)

Ok, it was clever in a sort of averagey way, not massively funny or amusing. No Iron Nappy being changed or the kid being sick in the suit or anything that would cause it to go viral in the way that bodily fluids do.

Maybe it was just a part of someone's college project or something.

Patrick Boivin (1)

Should have known straightaway that this was made by Patrick Boivin, he is quite the artist. Check out his Stopmotion work on Youtube, it's very well done!
