Sega To Bring Dreamcast Titles to PSN, Xbox Live

Soulskill posted more than 4 years ago | from the anyone-call-a-taxi dept.

Classic Games (Games) 158

Sega announced yesterday that it plans to bring back a number of popular Dreamcast games, updating them and releasing them for download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will come first, with further announcements expected after E3. "Both of the games will be based on the Dreamcast originals, but will be updated with high-definition graphics, surround sound, online leaderboards, and Achievement and Trophy support." Kotaku has a list of other titles they hope to see — what game(s) would you like Sega to bring back?

May I be the first to say the Dreamcast was the console with the BEST ratio of AWESOME games to crappy ones. Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, F355 Challenge, Powerstone, to name a few.

It's a great day to be a PSN or XBL subscriber!! The value of a subscription just went up!!!

I absolutely agree. I think bringing Dreamcast titles to XBLA/PSN is a fantastic idea. I would love to see the Power Stone series with online support. I would happily pay again for titles like Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, et cetera.

orthicviper (1800010) | more than 4 years ago | (#32545118)

ahh, online powerstone. there's an idea! i guess it's too late to revitalize the shenmue series, though.

Re:Yay!!!! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32542742)

That's only because of the Dreamcast's poor 3rd party support. No one wants to risk supporting a struggling console with a company bleeding money.

It does seem to have a high ratio of overrated games though, like Shenmue. People think Quake3 originated on the Dreamcast, too.

commodore64_love (1445365) | more than 4 years ago | (#32542766)

Nintendo 64's awesome-to-crap ratio was better. Mario, Banjo-Kazooie (twice), Zelda (twice), Goldeneye, Star Wars Racer, Fzero, Super Smash Bros, and on and on and on. IMHO. Of course if you go by sheer numbers, PS1 had the most good games.

I wonder if Sega will be porting games that were not already ported to PS2 or the Gamecube years ago. I've played both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi to death. I'm kinda sick of them, and would like something new from Sega.

Star Wars Episode I Racer? Are you serious? The game prominently featured flying vehicles, that, by some wild, drug-induced stretch of the imagination, slide when they encounter an ice patch! Just how does a vehicle powered by thrust, rather than friction, lose control on ice? The whole thing seems an incredible example of a generic game engine given custom graphics to match a franchise, and then pushed out the door.

I love the Dreamcast as much as anyone, and I couldn't care less about this. Why? I still have mine.

I wish Sega would focus on putting out new games that are as good as the ones they made for the Dreamcast.

Me too. I dusted it off recently and was amazed at how fun Crazy Taxi still is! I loved Res Evil Code Veronica too.
Sega made quality consoles. I went through god knows how many lazer units on my playstation 1. Tech support tells you over the phone to "turn it upside down". Build it upside down!

I wish that Sega was still in the console business, because the quality of the games was higher
when it was Sega, Nintendo, and Sony slugging it out.

Are they going to be in high definition? That could be a good reason to care.

Re:Yay!!!! (0)

The Dreamcast is already in HD, for certain values of HD (ie. 640x480@60hz)
Unless you have a gigantic TV, the originals are already at an impressive looking resolution.

Re:Yay!!!! (1)

morari (1080535) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543472)

I still have on of my Dreamcasts hooked up in the living room. It may not get as much play as it used to, but it is easily my favorite all-around console ever.

Re:Yay!!!! (1)

NetNed (955141) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543912)

Powerstone is one that I can not believe hasn't made it over to another console for sure. Even though it characters were not as polished as other games (and didn't have sweet bouncing fun bags on lady characters like others!), it had the best game play of any fighter I think ever. The second edition was a little bit of a let down, but still the series had great potential that I don't think any other fighters has tapped in to. Capcom dropped the ball on it I think......

Re:Yay!!!! (1)

Deadguy2322 (761832) | more than 4 years ago | (#32544886)

Power Stone did make it to another system. Power Stone Collection for the PSP has both Power Stone and Power Stone 2 on the same disc.

"Updated" (2, Insightful)

Pazy (1169639) | more than 4 years ago | (#32542614)

Apparently the "Update" for Crazy Taxi involves removing the original soundtrack, for me that separates it from the iconic memories I have of the game. This "Update" means that its not the game I remember playing as a kid so this "update" is not something im interested in. Though the idea of playing Dreamcast games on current consoles, if they arent "Updated" in a similar fashion them im totally in.

Re:"Updated" (0)

Re:"Updated" (1)

Don't worry, you can still buy an offspring CD and play that one track on single repeat throughout the entire game.

Re:"Updated" (1)

WankersRevenge (452399) | more than 4 years ago | (#32544752)

I see no mention of the soundtrack being removed in both the linked articles and the articles linked inside of them. I think you need to cite your resource.

Re:"Updated" (1)

log0n (18224) | more than 4 years ago | (#32545522)

"What won't be there? The Offspring and Bad Religion. SEGA couldn't pull off the licensing, so it replaced the classic "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!" of the Offspring's "All I Want" with a random smattering of punk bands. It's a crushing disappointment for sure (more so than the loss of the Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut licenses) and may be a deal-breaker for some. Crazy Taxi and the Offspring go together like Sex and the City. You could always turn down the music and put an Offspring album on your MP3 player of choice.

Despite the loss of its classic soundtrack, Crazy Taxi is still a lot of fun. I don't know that newer gamers will appreciate Crazy Taxi, but Dreamcast fans will want to at least give this a look. It brought back a lot of great memories for me. Now I need Chu Chu Rocket and life will be perfect."

Re:Soul Calibur (1)

commodore64_love (1445365) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543208)

5 if you count the original Soul Blade/Edge game.

The justification for the constant upgrades was to get better graphics and play, as each version moved from 32 bit to 64 bit and so on, but consoles have now peaked (1920x1080 and million of colors), so there's no longer any reason to keep buying the same game over and over

Re:Soul Calibur (0)

The original SoulCalibur is already on Xbox Live Arcade, though the gutted the challenge mode, IIRC.

Or, for that matter, the DS. Sega DID make an actually quite good GBA port of Chu Chu Rocket it a while ago, and ever since the DS came out, I've been left wondering why they never made a version for it. Seems a perfect fit with the stylus.

Yep, I am all on board for Chu Chu Rocket. I know Sega said it was coming out on XBLA a while back, but I haven't heard anything. I did a quick search, and didn't find anything beyond comment for the original announcement.

I'd LOVE to see this local AND internet playable.

That's great, if you have a GameCube or a Wii.

Re:Convert (1)

commodore64_love (1445365) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543278)

Why wouldn't you have a Wii? It's the number 1 selling console. Not having a Wii is like not having a PS2, PS1, Super Nintendo, NES or Atari (previous generations' best sellers).

Re:Convert (3, Insightful)

Narishma (822073) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543688)

Not really. All those consoles you cited generally had very good support from third party developers, and so had a huge amount of very good games. The Wii however is attracting all the shovelware (with a few gems from time to time, mostly from Nintendo) while the best AAA games are only available on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Re:Convert (1)

h4rr4r (612664) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543478)

If you can afford a ps3 or several 360s, since they die so often, you can easily afford the $35 for a gamecube.

Re:Convert (1)

CronoCloud (590650) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543428)

Yes, but what kind of RPG fan owns a Gamecube rather than a backwards compatible PS3. That's what pissed me off about Sega, they didn't port the ONE game PS2 RPG players wanted to see most to the PS2.

Re:Convert (1)

h4rr4r (612664) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543614)

I don't, since they do not make any backwards compatible PS3s anymore and I heard bad things about them at first. Instead the PS2 and PS3 share a shelf.

Re:Convert (1)

SlashdotOgre (739181) | more than 4 years ago | (#32542912)

I'm hoping for Skies to come out as well if only for it to get more exposure (and possibly draw support for a sequel). Skies is one of my favorite RPG's out there (up there with the Genesis version of Shadowrun), and I'd love to see a sequel. The story & environment was fairly original, the plot was interesting and gameplay mechanics fun -- it was really a solid title. I think there's a little hope because the SoA designers have done small things like having the main characters make a cameo in Valkyria Chronicles.

If they do bring it back, I'm curious if they'll make a way to play that little minigame that you played on the Dreamcast VMU. You needed a reward from that to get the final form of a particular "weapon" in the game.

Re:Convert (1)

commodore64_love (1445365) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543312)

If I recall correctly, the VMU was emulated in the Gamecube version to enable players to get the final weapon.

Re:my humble list (1)

CronoCloud (590650) | more than 4 years ago | (#32543462)

Considering how you can hook a regular USB keyboard to the PS3/360 and don't need to buy a special one like with the Deadcast, they really ought to port Typing of the Dead. (they never released the PS2 version, which did have USB support in the US)

Re:my humble list (1)

Dreamcast had the second best controller comfort-wise, after the Playstation 1/2/3 style. I suppose you prefer a bunch of crap pieced together along the lines of N64 and XBox 1/360?

Dreamcast had the second best controller comfort-wise, after the Playstation 1/2/3 style.

I must disagree. Of all the controllers you've just mentioned... no, of ALL controllers in the last three generations, the Playstation is near the bottom of the barrel. Pretty much everything about it is poorly designed: the two analog sticks near the center, no analog triggers, those buttons with wacky symbols rather than letters... and they keep the same bad design unchanged, year after year, and people keep buying that crap. Sad.

Re:Controller (1)

I do not play any regular arcade stuff (do not play at all on ps3 anymore at all), but REZ would make me turn the console on. Would be nice to have more tracks and places to explore, but what was there in the original is more than any other "musical shooter" offered ever since.

I was able to buy a copy of the soundtrack from an online reseller (who's name everybody would recognize, but I've completely forgotten...they were shut down by Sony/Nintendo...Lik Sang?) and I was listening to it just two days ago.

Sounds like you need to buy stuff on PC.

I'd suggest Steam, but a lot of people don't seem to believe they'll be around in 20 years - hence that insane "I must have a disc" requirement I keep hearing.

Well, for you, there's GOG. No DRM, so you can backup all the installers onto external HDD or DVD.

I'm not worried, though - Steam's track record is far superior to these other distribution services. XBoxLive/PSN will be good and dead before Steam disappears. (Microsoft already shutoff XBox1 Live, didn't they? That means in about 6-8 years, XBox360 Live will be shut down?)

Agreed, especially for another reason. As a person who has 2 fat PS3s and uses Other OS and no intention of upgrading to the latest firmware, I no longer can use PSN (unless I ditch Other OS).

The only games I'll buy are also those that don't require a later firmware, although I've only bought 1 PS3 game since Sony screwed Other OS users.

(btw, I haven't looked, but anyone out there with a list of games and releases and what firmware they require yet?)

Then again, I'm still on the fence about getting rid of both PS3s, esp. with some of the games fetching such a high trade in value--only 1 of the 2 consoles has actually been used. The other is a virgin 60gb PS3 (near literally--unpacked, but never powered on), I bought it as a backup. Of course, I fully expect said status of virginity to be questioned, or at least an offer made to be the first to insert a disc into the console.

did it ever cross your mind, to upgrade one ps3, and have otheros on the other... that way you could play and have otheros :O

Phantasy Star Online (1)

What I'd love to see would be an update of the original Phantasy Star Online... Updated graphics, including Episode 1, 2, and 4 (a new episode after those would be a nice bonus), and a solid online community (preferably with all the hacks fixed). Even if its a pipe-dream, I'd also like to see them make it an available option to connect to unofficial servers for when the servers that would be put up would inevitably be taken down.

It's entirely possible that Phantasy Star Online will be included in the downloadable re-releases. Fans attending the launch party for Phantasy Star Zero this past November, were treated to a teleconference with Satoshi Sakai [pso-world.com] , where it was announced that Sega had something big in mind to celebrate PSO's 10th Anniversary, which is coming up at the end of this year. A downloadable re-release of the game could very well be their plan.

If that is the case, however, I really doubt that it will include online support, and I would expect it to be a port of the Xbox version of the game, which means no Episode IV. Then again, if they're polishing it up like they're talking about with Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi, then who knows? They could very well end up giving us a surprising amount of new content.

Anything online (2, Insightful)

I'm assuming Sega will only be responsible for releasing first party Dreamcast titles (Namco previously released the DC version of Soul Calibur to Xbox Live Arcade.) Sega should release DC games with a multiplayer component since most of those titles are offline now. I'm thinking Outtrigger and Alien Front Online - the latter of which came out near the end of the Dreamcast's life cycle. And of course, Phantasy Star Online.

I'm still curious to see how they will display the games in high definition. I guess they'll just make everything widescreen and upscale the 480p image - I highly doubt they'll have the graphics rendered in 720p.

Star Wars Episode 1: Racer for the win. One of the best racing games made on the Dreamcast. See for reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_I:_Racer

Anyone ever play Starlancer? I doubt it will be ported, but if you have a dreamcast try to pick up a copy.
