That doesn't make any sense. You can buy a brand new iPhone 3Gs from Walmart for $99.

thebagel (650109) | more than 4 years ago | (#32738944)

That's probably with a contract. I imagine the no-strings price is far higher. See endnote 2 in this link: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone [apple.com]

Re:More money than brains? (1)

atamido (1020905) | more than 4 years ago | (#32739006)

Yes, but used phones are still tied to AT&T. The monthly price at AT&T is the same whether you have a contract or not, so why not sign the contract?

Re:More money than brains? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32740530)

Maybe because, after accidentally smashing up your phone and posting the video to break.com, you realize that you're still under contract with AT&T.

Some of your options:
  - Buy a new un-subsidized phone (several hundreds of dollars)
  - Buy a used phone (a couple hundred dollars)
  - Switch to using pay phones, but keep paying your AT&T cell phone bill.

Another possibility is that you'd like to use your phone on a network other than AT&T.

Re:More money than brains? (1)

milkmage (795746) | more than 4 years ago | (#32739566)

sure it does. there's no contract with ATT on a used phone. that $99 dollar phone will cost you almost a grand in airtime (24 months @ $40/per for voice only)

Re:More money than brains? (1)

atamido (1020905) | more than 4 years ago | (#32739630)

But the prices for iPhone enabled plans at AT&T are the same whether or not there is a contract. Where exactly are the savings?

I just checked my settings to see if I'd made a mistake, but I had not. Idle is blocked from the front page by my settings, and yet I currently see this 'story' and the 'Kind of Computer Mice' one displayed. The other one was in collapsed form, but this one is fully expanded just like a story I might be interested in, in spite of the fact that it's in the idle section.

The kdawson block still seems to work - maybe I should just block samzenpus as well.

Keep in mind who you're dealing with here: guys who build heat rays in their backyards for fun.

To them, setting things on fire is fun. Making things explode is AWESOME.

Re:Someone who knows more about the lithium batter (1)

atrain728 (1835698) | more than 4 years ago | (#32731380)

I believe that the explosion risk of a Li-Ion battery is more from it being exposed to extreme electrical impetus beyond it's tolerance, and less about heat. Certainly exposing the Lithium to the water vapor in the air will cause combustion, but that's more of smolder than an explosion.

Re:Someone who knows more about the lithium batter (2, Interesting)

jeffmeden (135043) | more than 4 years ago | (#32731480)

The heat is what causes the explosion, as a side effect of the "electrical impetus". The electricity itself isn't really explosive. Heat it up sufficiently some other way, and you will have just as much of a fireball since all you need to do is kickstart the exothermic chain reaction in the lithium. There are plenty of fun videos around of this in action.

Re:Someone who knows more about the lithium batter (1)

fear025 (763732) | more than 4 years ago | (#32731864)

Hopefully they remembered the "will it blend" episode with the iphone. "iPhone Smoke, don't breathe this". I did hear some coughing in the video though...

Re:Someone who knows more about the lithium batter (1)

Teun (17872) | more than 4 years ago | (#32731518)

And even when it doesn't explode, inhaling Lithium vapour is certainly a real danger.

The effects might only show up hours to a day after exposure and can be fatal.

Re:Someone who knows more about the lithium batter (1)

vlm (69642) | more than 4 years ago | (#32731842)

And even when it doesn't explode, inhaling Lithium vapour is certainly a real danger.

A pharmacological dose, probably of a salt not pure metal, would be about 20 mg/Kg. So, 100% complete consumption of less than 2 grams of Li metal would seem to be borderline safe for me. An entire iphone weighs about 100 grams, and what matters is not the weight of the phone, or even the weight of the battery, but the weight of the lithium metal inside the battery.

Depending on exactly how stored, batteries are allowed on passenger aircraft from 8 to 25 grams of Li content, and air circulation inside a plane is far worse than outdoors. So if 1/4 the weight of an iphone were pure Li (unlikely) and you ignited it in an enclosed area and breathed it for hours (unlikely) the FAA thinks you probably won't kill or severely injure passengers. Outside I would assume you could survive a large multiple of 25 grams, maybe 250, maybe 2500 grams. Which would be quite a few iphones worth.

It would be interesting to calculate if the burning plastic fumes would kill you before the battery fumes. I'm thinking the plastic fumes will kill you before lithium toxicity sets in.

Very few solar rays of death are operated indoors in confined unventilated spaces, I find it highly unlikely you could inhale or swallow even 1% of the total released lithium without using a crack pipe or similar apparatus. Stand upwind and dose rates probably drop to zero.

In summary, the danger of lithium poisoning would be far lower, than, say, permanent blindness from the light, or burning plastic toxicity, lacerations from the cracked screen, or even simple skin burns.

Re:Someone who knows more about the lithium batter (1)

Teun (17872) | more than 4 years ago | (#32732348)

The toxicity is one thing but Lithium vapour will potentially destroy your lungs and that's a real-life danger when inhaling it, just read the data sheets.

Not a teenager by a long shot and I still enjoyed that. Or are you sad that someone might defile the fruit of Jobs' loins?

I don't really care for Jobs loinfruit or anything that's from that region, nor for his iGadgets, but this is just infantile at best. Now, I can appreciate an immature cock joke as much as the next guy, but I really hate waste like this. Perhaps do something cool with it?

A couple of coworkers and I had some fun with a cheap digital camera a while back. Create a water rocket, build camera inside water rocket, and let it fly. We were expecting the camera to break after the first launch, but it actually survived the entire day. Sure, it's not exactly rocket science, but it's a hell of a lot more fun than setting the camera on fire under a magnifying glass "hurr hurr fire hot". All this misses is the thoughtful narration of the modern equivalent of Beavis and Butthead, now really.

Burning a $500 phone is just a rich kids way of saying "Look at me, my parents have got money. Here, have a cigar, and a $100 bill to light it with. It's all good man, my parents paid for it."

Really, if you don't like idle don't fucking read it.

I try not too, but for some reason the RSS feeds don't take user preferences into account. But the thing is, slashdot lately has been a shadow of its former self. Perhaps the audience changed so much that most people here don't want to tinker or toy with something anymore, or perhaps the firehose has turned slashdot into a story-popularity contest.

It's like I'm browsing 4chan's /g/, but without the images. All it needs now is a couple of guys spamming a degoratory term for african americans, and the "you fags sure got told" meme and we're set.

Anyway, who am I to argue against the obvious will of the masses. Up next, will it blend? The iphone 4 down the blender, together with the fruit of Steve's loins. WHIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRR... Exciting!

I guess... if anything, even though if we really look deep inside ourselves we'll realize we knew it all along, we can thank Apple for inadvertently showing us quite clearly that tech journalism, and journalism in general, is in crisis. Rarely is news reported these days without bias. I guess unbiased just doesn't draw the crowds it once did. So in that regard, I find this "news" in the raw refreshing (still cringing as I often do to news).

They missed a chance. (5, Funny)

Back when calculator watches were cool, I had one die on me over the summer. I replaced it, melted the dead one with a magnifying glass, then hid it and waited until I went back to school. Then I waited more, for the right weather.

One night I wandered into the neighboring dorm room, hair wet from the rain, acting fuzzy.

Of course they thought I might be drunk. But I slurringly denied it. "No, I think I got hit by lightning."

Hoots of derision. "No, really. I was walking back here, and then I... I woke up... and my watch was like this." I held up my wrist with the melted face...

I wish I could have milked it a bit more, but I had to stop them before they called an ambulance.

Although, you must consider, the depreciation of those early iPhones is killer. $600 to kindling in three years is pretty bad.

>after its destruction, the phone still plays music

I don't think the editor understands the meaning of the word "destruction." Tape that sucker to a half-stick of dynamite, touch off the dynamite, and I am quite sure that sucker will not play music.

They absolutely missed a geek chance to play Still Alive on it instead of some random song.

The day without iPhone (2, Insightful)

Oh, how I look forward to a single day without something about the iPhone. It is as if our trillion dollar economy depended solely upon this novelty. The poor desperation of all the lost souls in the world that don't own one and never will. Come on /.ers, let's try just one day without a meaningless story about something that most people don't own and most never will.

You know, you can never really turn iPhone completely off ('coz BB-Apple needs to know where you and your iPhone are every moment).

And by never I really mean NEVER.

That phone took a beating before it broke. I guess they are as durable as Apple claims. Very funny video thought that poor phone.

You missed a comma: Very funny video, thought that poor phone.

Apparently, in some ways the iPhone is like The Little Engine that Could ... "I think I can, I think I can ...."

Just in case your captain goes nuts and opens the solar shields, and you still need to listen to music.

How totally wasteful and childish!

I just bought a new 3GS and I retired my 1st gen iPhone to "remote control status".

It still functions as a pocket PC plus I am using a remote control app on it to control my home theater system via my WIFI.

It still functions quite nicely as a multi-function, general purpose tool.

Using it around the house in such capactity greatly reduces the wear and tear on my nifty new 3GS..

I just can't believe someone would be so wasteful. If nothing else, give it away to someone that needs one. Many people have never had an iPhone and would be tickled to get a free phone, used, old or otherwise.

The 4th is out now, it is time for you to have a remote for the remote!

I was waiting for the lithium battery to explode that would have made the video more interesting. Also the gases coming out of the burning phone are not something you would want to inhale.

For when it bursts into flame in your pocket ;)
