Soulskill posted more than 4 years ago | from the hiatus-ending dept.

Classic Games (Games) 36

Game developer Just Add Water announced today that the Oddworld series, dormant since 2005, will be getting multiple new titles in the near future. Quoting: "... for the past 12 months we have been working extremely closely with the fantastic people at Oddworld Inhabitants, from what started off as brief discussions in June 2009, to now working on multiple projects, across multiple platforms. Whilst we cannot go into specifics right now, we can tell you that over the coming weeks and months we will be announcing these exciting projects starring all of your favorite Oddworld characters."

Why was this modded offtopic? Wasn't "hmm" a GameSpeak phrase?

Of course, it was using your ancestoral spirits to possess your own flatulence.

I see a game about saving an endangered species from being someone's lunch. And a rescue counter. (290/300 made me unhappy.)

That's what they get... (2, Insightful)

For abandoning the PS2 in favor of the original X-Box. Exclusivity deals FTL.

It's ridiculous you get modded flamebait for pointing out the fact that exclusivity deals stink and it did indeed cost Oddworld alot of possible sales. Fanboys suck.

I think they were mistaking my schadenfreude for trolling. I loved the original Oddworld game.

I always found it ironic that the Oddworld games were about the little guy against the big corporations. With Much's Oddysee, Oddworld teamed up with Microsoft, then for Strangers Wrath Oddworld teamed up with EA.

Possibly the Oddbox? (3, Insightful)

J_DarkElf (602111) | more than 4 years ago | (#32923430)

It was mentioned before by the Oddworld Inhabitants team that if the re-released Abe games sold well there would be an Oddbox, with additionally Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath ported to Windows.
This sounds more like a reference to that, since there is no indication Squeek's Oddysee or other new Oddworld games are in development.

This would be awesome. Long ago I lost my copy of Munch's Oddysee for Xbox (and stopped playing the console) and would love to have Windows versions of those games.

Is Lorne Lanning still involved? (1, Insightful)

Is he still a Glukkon, like Darth Gates turned him into? :)

About time as well. All they're missing now is a motion picture ;)

I wondered what happened to them... (0)

I had the opportunity to tour their SLO facility just before Munch's Odyssey was to be released. They had some great ideas in the works, and I looked forward to seeing more. The industry has really changed since their last game came out, and I can't wait to see what they will bring to the table.

Oddworld XVIII: Violating Abe's Corpse? (2, Funny)

Rogerborg (306625) | more than 4 years ago | (#32923942)

I guess whether warming up old franchises and churning out sequels ad infinitum is PlusBad or PlusGood largely depends on whether you're a fanboi of that particular franchise. Let's remember that the next time we mock the latest incarnation of MetalWarfareHalo 23: Encashening Extreme Edition.

There's a difference between a fan and a fanboy. There should be a word for the anti-fanboy too, the kind of person who wants to pee on the chips of all those happy to hear this news because he doesn't like the franchise himself.

icebraining (1313345) | more than 4 years ago | (#32924382)

Besides, they made three games (Abe's Exoddus was a bonus game) and from what I can tell the third is very different in gameplay and story. Not exactly incrementing the version number like many games series out there.

I saw someone referred to as a "hateboi" a few days ago - I like that!

Late Adopter (1492849) | more than 4 years ago | (#32929842)

As I recall, the original plan was to make 5 "oddysee" games in the Oddworld universe. The story was planned right from the get-go. Of course it's difficult to plan ahead for reception of the games, publisher enthusiasm, funding, etc, so what's happened thusfar is slightly different.

There's been spin-offs (Abe's Exodus) and maybe you can blame those of milking the franchise, but I don't think you can say that about the Oddworld series generally.

Good News, Everyone! (0)

Subject, :P.

I loved the old games, I loved Munch's Oddysee. I thought Stranger's Wrath was awesomely different.

This better be good.

What happened to the rumours... (2, Interesting)

Amarantine (1100187) | more than 4 years ago | (#32924114)

...of a re-release of all 5 Oddworld-games for Windows through steam, including Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath? Wikipedia links to http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2009/10/12/oddworld-games-being-ported-to-pc/1 [bit-tech.net] and appearantly it was confirmed by Oddworld Inhabitants for early 2010.

Follow Me (3, Funny)

shadowknot (853491) | more than 4 years ago | (#32924434)

Amazing, isn't it, that in the years since Abe's Oddysee came out the phrase "Follow Me" has become a cultural phenomenon thanks to Twitter. Or am I making to much of a tenuous connection over two words?

Re:Follow Me (2, Insightful)

ampathee (682788) | more than 4 years ago | (#32924492)

Yeah, I think you are. It's not like "follow me" wasn't a common phrase before Abe came along.

Yup, it's a little tenuous.

Re:Follow Me (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32925030)

I think airports made that phrase much more of a phenomenon before Abe did.

Okay.

Fuck 3D (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32924978)

Please make the new games 2D like the original. Or at least 2D gameplay in a 3D universe. Some types of games are not the same when in 3D.

I guess their discussion went something like this: (3, Funny)

what started off as brief discussions in June 2009

Oddworld Inhabitants: "Hello"

Oddworld Inhabitants: "Follow me"
Just Add Water: "Okay"
Oddworld Inhabitants: "Work!"
Just Add Water: *works*
