That energon consisted of the power of human right violations, lead and Yao Mings broken foot.

Don't forget massive amounts of cadmium. Seriously though, I think its' head is out of proportion with the body. Pretty cool otherwise.

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32953290)

Eh, you want human right violations? We got your Abu Ghraib, guantanamo, waterboarding, Alberto Gonzales and John Yoo...

Lead? We got the Sea of BP, with support of Congress!

Americans should really shut their hole up about "human rights"...

Hasbro's in trouble! (4, Funny)

Drakkenmensch (1255800) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951328)

You know there's a problem when chinese knockoffs are getting more awesome than the original american-made toys.

not that (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32951560)

it would be hard to beat crummy, masturbatory, gluey, plastic looking CGI effects.
Yeah, the Chinese know you can't beat a full scale in your face prop!

It could never have been done here - It would not have passed smog!

twistedsymphony (956982) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951700)

it's not a knock off it's a 100% original art installation titled: Optamus Plime

Junked cars, scrap metal and recycled trademarks (5, Funny)

Rogerborg (306625) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951330)

We like to talk up the Big Bad MPAA, but on a global scale they're strictly penny-ante. Sure, they can bankrupt you, but all joking aside, they can't (yet) have you executed and harvest your organs for sale.

I guess when you live day to day with the real threat of being shot in the head for saying the wrong thing in the wrong place, you don't feel particularly scared of receiving a Strongly Worded Cease and Desist.

For erecting this honking great virile "Fuck you!" to corporate lawyers, China, I salute you. Every repressive totalitarian regime has a silver lining.

Why does everything have to be about intellectual property and how evil the US is? Why can't this simply be about fans taking their passion for Transformers and creating an incredible statue?

Re:Junked cars, scrap metal and recycled trademark (1)

sadness203 (1539377) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951520)

Because fans constantly receive cease and desist letters from these same assholes "protecting" their IP ?

Re:Junked cars, scrap metal and recycled trademark (1)

Rob Riggs (6418) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951524)

Don't those Chinese know that they do not own pop culture -- you can't just riff off of other people's intellectual property like that. The world isn't a 6 billion-person jazz ensemble!

If you mean the iPhone 4, that's actually the antenna.

Replica? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32951486)

That's not a replica. That's the real Optimus Prime. He's really good at holding still, but he's starting to get sick of everyone staring at him. "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings. Gawking is not." *STOMP*

Cheap chinese knockoff (2, Funny)

Orgasmatron (8103) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951532)

Everyone knows the real Optimus Prime is made from trucks, not cars.

Re:Cheap chinese knockoff (2, Funny)

Lumpy (12016) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951898)

So it's Kiamus Prime?

Re:Cheap chinese knockoff (2, Interesting)

interval1066 (668936) | more than 4 years ago | (#32952508)

You know what would be great? A steampunk style giant robot. Think if Transformers had been created back in the 50's, Optomus Prime might have been made partly from an Edsel.

Very Cool (1)

helix2301 (1105613) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951772)

That is just down right cool. I give who ever thought of this credit the work and time put into this project must have been intense.

Unlicensed .... (1)

RichMan (8097) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951786)

I expect this Optimus Prime will soon be destroyed due to an attack by a lawyer.

Fear the awesome power of lawyers.

Cruelly Disappointed in the link (4, Informative)

glassware (195317) | more than 4 years ago | (#32951864)

That's not Optimus Prime. That's some bastardized, hollywoodized, modern re-imagining of the true Optimus Prime.

The real Optimus Prime died inside Autobot City after handing the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus.

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32952416)

Good lord do you fanboys QQ about everything? The hollywood version of Prime looks far better than any of the old animated versions of him did. Get over it.

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (1)

mehemiah (971799) | more than 4 years ago | (#32954016)

um, thats subjective. Its probably trollish also. Also the fact that this looks more like the hollywood version just exemplifies the difference in design style between the origenal animation and the movie. All the anime's in between have been fairly sad in their interpretation in my opinion. I appreciated the obvious truck resemblance he retained as a robot. Most of the transformers retained a certain similarity to what they transformed in to. The biggest exception being Megatron.

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32954650)

you mean aside from that big ol' trigger between his legs?

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (1)

mehemiah (971799) | more than 4 years ago | (#32958908)

ok, maybe not an exception but he bared the least resemblance. The only clue was the arm cannon KIND of looked like a scope. You may be referring to this [gizmodo.com] likeness but i mostly remember him like this [giantbomb.com] .

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32952516)

You fanboys are morons.
1. The Hollywood version looks far better than any of the old comics, tv shows, or that god-awful movie ever did.
2. The "real" Optimus Prime... too easy, I'll leave that for someone else
3. Quit bitching just to bitch.

QQ moar plz.

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (1)

oldmac31310 (1845668) | more than 4 years ago | (#32952658)

Yes, but he conveniently came back to life in the G3 series, didn't he? and Ultra Magnus was just not up to the job.

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (1)

Rude Turnip (49495) | more than 4 years ago | (#32952828)

This is not informative. This is sad. Optimus Prime is a fictional character. And as someone who's loved watching The Transformers since age 7, I think the redesigned ones in the recent movie and video games look incredibly badass and more plausible than the 1980s cartoon. Even the toys back then were closer to today's designs because they had to be able to bend and flex a little.

Re:Cruelly Disappointed in the link (1)

DarthBling (1733038) | more than 4 years ago | (#32955136)

Oh no! Nobody told you.

Optimus didn't actually die, he just went to sleep. There's video of the day he woke back up here [youtube.com] .

Olympic stadiums (1)

soupforare (542403) | more than 4 years ago | (#32952036)

Always a ridiculous waste of money and space after the olympics is through. This is pretty cool, though.

Transformer! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32952778)

But can it change into a truck? Isn't that the most important feature?

green activity? rofl (1, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32953114)

So dragging a bunch of old, junked cars out, welding them together, and transporting 30 tons of scrap as a display dedicated to a cartoon... is green?

"Composed of junked car parts and various bits of scrap metal, the interesting irony of this unofficial knockoff is that if Transformers really existed this is probably what they would look like. Let's all agree that this is probably the coolest way the world's nations could encourage more participation in green environment initiatives."

and people wonder why nobody takes hippies seriously...

No, it is supergreen!

Coincidentally, this is also the unofficial Hollywood motto.

I'll bet that... (1)

Jozza The Wick (1805012) | more than 4 years ago | (#32953468)

Even made of out of garbage, he still looks better than the actual garbage masquerading as Optimus in the Bay films...

Eh... (1)

Red_Chaos1 (95148) | more than 4 years ago | (#32955114)

This showed up on The Awesomer like 3 or 4 days ago.

Coincidence? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32955510)

First China shows off the latest additions to their military machine, one of them cleverly hidden in plain sight as a "replica", but in reality a message to the Pentagon, and then they shoot down another satellite [slashdot.org] .

This... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#32955942)

sucks. It doesn't transform. I want the 1min of my life back that this story just stole.

That's not an Optimus Prime ... (1)

RockDoctor (15477) | more than 3 years ago | (#32962968)

An Optimus prime is a hand-pressurised paraffin cooking stove.

Earthquakes (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#32963436)

Hmm, in China, they have earthquakes, right?? :)

That is a pretty impressive sight, but the idea of it dropping an arm on innocent bystanders is not very pretty...
