First 3-D IMAX Porn Movie Made In Hong Kong

samzenpus posted more than 3 years ago | from the ducking-the-money-shot dept.

Media 201

tekgoblin writes "Christopher Sun of Hong Kong is directing a new porn movie that will actually be in 3-D. The movie is being called 3-D Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy and will be the first 3-D IMAX porn movie. From the article: 'First out of the gates, the soft porn Hong Kong film comes as the stricken industry, hit hard by free Internet porn in recent years, turns to 3-D as a potential money-spinner, following on from the success of Hollywood blockbusters such as James Cameron's Avatar.'"

Yup. The film that is most widely cited as the first 3D pornographic movie is Hot Skin [wtf-film.com] from 1977, predating the film in the linked article by over 30 years. It also featured some comparatively famous porn stars of the day, such as Serena and John Holmes.

No kidding, much less in an IMAX theatre. I was under the impression that all IMAX's were in Museums and learning centers. Then again, maybe they just mean it is being shot in super-high resolution.

Many cinemas nowadays have IMAX screens; Check this list of IMAX Venues [wikipedia.org] for your locale.

There are 3 non-science-center screens within short driving distance in the Greater Toronto Area (Ontario, Canada), out of 5 total screens.

The effects in Avatar as viewed in IMAX3D were almost real; amazing quality.

Re:It's things like this (2, Insightful)

Abcd1234 (188840) | more than 3 years ago | (#33268362)

Why? Like eating, sex is a pleasurable biological function. Do you "[worry] about our future as a species" when you discover people pay money for a good meal? If so, why do you view sex differently?

Re:It's things like this (1)

vlueboy (1799360) | more than 3 years ago | (#33268638)

Do you "[worry] about our future as a species" when you discover people pay money for a good meal? If so, why do you view sex differently?

Because by being more "pleasurable" [to use your own words] than a restaurant outing, the law prevents you from doing it in public :-)

Paying for it, publicly or not, is also a crime in most localities.

Re:It's things like this (3, Insightful)

nukenerd (172703) | more than 3 years ago | (#33268666)

Because if you pay for a meal you actually get the food. Pay for porn and you don't actually get the sex. It's more like paying to watch other people eating.

Can't you think of a car analogy instead?

Re:It's things like this (4, Insightful)

tool462 (677306) | more than 3 years ago | (#33269044)

It's more like paying to watch other people eating.

You realize this is incredibly popular. Cooking shows have been popular for a long time. Food Network is very successful. A show like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives is not much more than watching a guy eat tons of food and talk about how wonderful it is. If that doesn't fit the analogy perfectly, I don't know what does.

We are hard-wired to love the Four Fs. Feeding, fleeing, fighting, and fucking. And we are more than happy to watch video of all of them.

Jesus, taking the family out to porn just isn't the same as it used to be.

Got to pay for parking $10, 2x Adult tickets at $25 and 2x Kids $15 tickets + $5 x 4 for 3D! Then the wife and kids are going to want popcorn and candy. That's another $40.

What started as just a nice night out to watch some porn with the family ends up costing $150. No wonder the theatrical porn industry is dieing. Who has that kind of money?

Porn is the ultimate killer app (1, Insightful)

Are you sure it was porn and not the fact that VHS could fit an entire feature film on one tape and Betamax could not?

Also, porn backed HD-DVD and some how blu-ray won.

Re:Porn is the ultimate killer app (1, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#33267950)

Yeah, I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that betamax could only record 1 hour when it came out, while VHS could do 2 hours.

Re:Porn is the ultimate killer app (4, Informative)

phantomfive (622387) | more than 3 years ago | (#33268370)

This rumor has been debunked several times, if you do a Google search you will find a lot of stories explaining why it's not true. Not only was porn actually available on Betamax (as this pervert demonstrates [google.com] ), but the war was mainly over tape length. Everyone had super-small TVs back then anyway, so quality of the tape didn't matter much, it still looked like garbage on the screen (by today's standards). This was doubly true if you were recording something off the air.

It's been my understanding that IMAX [imax.com] is really fussy about licencing their equipment and technology, and find it highly unlikely that they would allow its use for porn.

Of course we live in an age when you can buy an "IMAX" dvd - surely one of the more oxymoronic claims since "HD" radio came on the scene.

I don't see a problem. DVDs play in iMacs (which nowadays are almost as big as TVs), and "Hybrid Digital Radio" broadcasts are a hybrid of analog and digital.

I mean, it's not like 3D television is a niche technology that adds very little to some genres of entertainment...why wouldn't you want to watch sitcoms of people sitting around talking in 3D--it would be something to distract you from the crappy story!

But seriously, I'm curious, what kind of stuff you think would actually be worth paying extra to get in 3D (to pay for production costs and viewing equipment)? So far only action flicks have gone for it because their sole attraction is visual effects. I could see things like documentaries benefiting from 3D, but it's currently impractical to get 3D equipment into the field for filming wildlife.

Dunbal (464142) | more than 3 years ago | (#33268080)

Porn is a masturbation tool. Soft porn has no use at all, except maybe to pretend to be porn where real porn doesn't or can't exist.

However as a masturbation tool anyone who tries to build a business model by showing porn in public is doomed to failure because no one is encouraged to masturbate in public. In fact that would be kind of creepy. It's why porn magazines, books and videos (which you can take home) and internet porn (which you can view at home) are successful, whereas porn cinemas often do poorly - especially since the 1970's and the invention of video tapes.

The only exception to this is the strip club/peep show genre, since live women are hard to reproduce at home by those that seek them.

I dunno, I guess some people are willing to pay for anything. And teenagers are always desperate to see a pair of tits. I find it hard to see this as a long term revenue generator however.

Porn is a sex toy. You can enjoy it with a partner or on your own. As for soft porn, consider this scenario: have you ever been out, seen an attractive woman and used her as wank fodder later? She wasn't going down on some guy in the subway or dancing naked but it was still enough to arouse you. That's basically how soft porn works.

I'm willing to bet this one is going "straight to video" and as soon as several 3D pr0n releases appear, my guess is that 3D television sales will see a jump. And why not, pr0n was leading the charge on both VHS and The Internet... why not 3D televisions!

given the title, and the mention of soft porn, I think dubbing this as an IMAX pr0n will probably turn out to be somewhat of an exaggeration. I'm guessing it's a sequel to sex & zen, with hsu chi, while it had lots of gratuitous nudity and sex scenes it was more akin to the crappy european soft porns you see at night on tv in germany. Honestly, I'm kinda meh about stuff like that, if I want porn that's why god gave us the internet, if I want a movie I want it to be watchable. A little eye candy here and there is fine, but trying to go half way in between porn and plot just makes things unwatchable for me.

I'm surprised (1)

I think it's more surprising that it took this long to happen.

Personally, I'm shocked that this movie wasn't made long before Avatar. It doesn't make sense.
