The Bomb Squad Olympiad Starts Today

samzenpus posted about 4 years ago | from the explosions-for-all-ages dept.

Crime 43

The bomb suit relay and the robot obstacle course are just two of the events you can enjoy at the Bomb Squad Olympiad. Over the next three days squads from across South Carolina will compete and showcase their bomb defusing capabilities for the public. I hear the deep fried dynamite is especially good.

Wait a second, that's a pun *and* a bomb joke. Don't you go being too clever on us, y'hear?

Deep fried dynamite (3, Insightful)

Don't believe it-- it will give you a headache.

Re:Deep fried dynamite (1)

SuricouRaven (1897204) | about 4 years ago | (#33795198)

I'm not sure if the joke is intentional or not, as headaches actually do result from handling dynamite. The explosive used is nitroglycerin (Dynamite is just nitroglycerin made safe to handle), which can be absorbed through the skin. It causes headaches.

Olympiad? (0)

From Wikipedia: An Olympiad is a period of four years, associated with the Olympic Games of Classical Greece. [...] Today, an Olympiad refers to a period beginning January 1 of a year in which the Summer Olympics are due to occur, and lasting four years.

They own NO robots (2, Insightful)

professorguy (1108737) | about 4 years ago | (#33794734)

Robots? ROBOTS!?!?

They have a radio-controlled platform with manually controlled servos. How is THAT a robot? It does absolutely NOTHING autonomously (except rust).

Re:They own NO robots (2, Insightful)

elrous0 (869638) | about 4 years ago | (#33794930)

Ever since those "robot wars" shows in the 90's, people seem to have taken to calling any glorified RC car a "robot." I remember when a robot had to be autonomous (or at least semi-autonomous) to be consider a "robot" as opposed to "remote-controlled mobile servo device." Hell, we had remote-controlled toys like this when I was a kid, and no one considered them robots.

Re:They own NO robots (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#33795316)

Robots according to a textbook I have called CIM System (CIM is Computer Integrated Manufacturing) must meet the following criteria:
-More than 1 axis
-Programmable, and able to run Autonomously
-Multi-Purpose

Yes it seems the definition of robot has fallen far from the tree.

Olympiad? (4, Insightful)

CheerfulMacFanboy (1900788) | about 4 years ago | (#33794854)

Okay, sure, it's an event limited to South Carolina, and it's a yearly event, not every 4 years. I can live with that. But the Olympiad is the time between the games, you hillbillies.

And oh yeah, blame samzenpus... everyone else does.

Tell that to the white-trash rednecks who run the International Math Olympiad [imo-official.org] !

DNS-and-BIND (461968) | about 4 years ago | (#33796414)

Because they'd be sued into dust if they dared use the word "Olympics"?

PS your bigotry is showing.

Re:Olympiad? (1)

Kierthos (225954) | about 4 years ago | (#33797132)

No, no, I agree with the GP. I live in South Carolina, and there are plenty of hillbillies here.

So? Don't. Does World Games, err, Championship not sound big enough for some local excuse to get drunk?

So is yours.

In other news, the accepted use of words can change over the span of 2,700 years. I suppose those hillbillies must also be running all the Math Olympiads and Science Olympiads all over the world?

Fun factoid: the "Science Olympiad" originated in North Carolina. Another one: the meaning changed to wrong for the first couple of Olympic games, but then turned back to right again.

Re:Olympiad? (1)

StikyPad (445176) | about 4 years ago | (#33798882)

It may be in South Carolina now, but I believe it originated in Atlanta.

What? Too soon?

Re:Olympiad? (1)

bobcote (304341) | about 4 years ago | (#33806810)

Tell that to NBC when they broadcast the "Olympiad" every four years (and promote ad nauseum)

Re:Olympiad? (1)

CheerfulMacFanboy (1900788) | about 4 years ago | (#33810102)

NBC [nbcolympics.com] seems to be pretty sure they broadcast the "Olympics", the "Olympic Games", or the "Games of the nth Olympiad". Which is the same thing by slightly different names, and not the Olympiad. But please do enlighten us.

Although I'm sure that the Delhi bomb squad folks are having some sleepless nights, they probably won't win any medals.

Nothing for me (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#33798974)

Well, as a visitor, I would be frustrated by this event. They show the most uninteresting parts of this fascinating topic.

It is understandable that they don't want to perform controlled detonations for the enjoyment of the general public or discuss the secret art of defusing a bomb, but I would still be frustrated (shame on me).

Off-color jokes... (1)

Shoten (260439) | about 4 years ago | (#33799344)

The opportunities just defy belief...

  - It's in South Carolina (A redneck's last words? "Hey, y'all...watch this!")
  - It involves explosives (ibid.)
  - It's being held at a HIGH SCHOOL, for God's sake. What about a high school is the best place to hold EOD activities, even simulated ones?

Oblig. (1)

Cynic (1)

severn2j (209810) | about 4 years ago | (#33805374)

The cynical amongst us might think this sort of thing just reinforces the idea that "Terrorists are among us!" and we should give lots of tax and civil liberties to the government to "protect" us.. But that's just cynicism, right?

Saw a lost one today (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 4 years ago | (#33806306)

Had to laugh when I saw this. This morning traveling to work on the A14 in the east of England and I passed a Reliant Robin all decked out in mat black, complete with front stabilisers (a common mod to Robins that stopped them toppling over!), tinted windows, spotlight bar across the roof and lots of attached paraphernalia doing it's over weighted maximum speed of about 40mph. In the front and back were full width window stickers with the words "Bomb Squad". Boy, was he ever lost!!
