Sex Drugs and Texting

samzenpus posted more than 3 years ago | from the busy-hands-are-happy-hands dept.

Facebook 287

statesman writes "The Associated Press reports that teens who text frequently are three and a half times more likely to have sex. A survey of 4,200 public high school students in the Cleveland area found that one in five students sent more than 120 text messages a day or spent more than 3 hours a day on Facebook. Students in this group were much more likely to have sex. Alcohol and drug use also correlate with frequent texting and heavy Facebook use."

I'd imagine that both hyper-texting and sex would correlate strongly with type-A personalities. And anyone texting that often is likely to be very extroverted. I'd also bet that the drug use in this group is as much about fitting in with a group of peers as it is about any pre-disposition towards substance use. astaines (451138) | more than 3 years ago | (#34186982)

Kids who text all the time and live (sort of) on Facebook or Bebo may well be kids who already have problems. This study is a survey of schoolkids at point in time, and does not provide any data on whether early sex and drugs cause Facebook, Facebook causes early sex and drugs, or, most likely, both reflect existing issues facing the kids. Indeed texting and Facebook are likely better coping strategies than sex and drugs, though perhpas les immediately enjoyable.

Pass along please, nothing to see here.

Basically, the more social a teen is the more likely it is that they're going to date and have sex. Also, the more social your teen is, the more likely it is that they are going to go to parties with alcohol and drugs.

What's new here? Stop giving parents new "warning signs" to start worrying and freaking out about. I would be happy that my kid is social, unless it's out of hand, because it generally means they're more well adjusted.

I'll be the first to say it: Correlation does not imply causation.

It should not be surprising that heavy facebook use and texting indicates a more active social life. Teenagers with a more active social life are more likely to be in social situations that could lead to risky social behaviours.

In all likelyhood both are being caused by having an active social life.

I think they have it backwards! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#34187096)

Duh. How about those who are more social are more apt to be drinking and having sex. Facebook and texting aren't causing them to have more sex. Those who like to drink and have sex are just those who actually know how to talk to each other. Geez.

The last quote in the article has it right. (0)
