Teenager Tries To Hire Hitman Via Facebook

samzenpus posted more than 3 years ago | from the assassin-request dept.

Crime 464

An anonymous reader writes "Hiring a hitman can cost a pretty penny these days. Why buy an ad in the classifieds section when you can simply use Facebook? Of course, you may end up having to face 11 to 22 years in prison, but that's worth the risk, right? That's what happened to 19-year-old Corey C. Adams of Pennsylvania. Last June, Adams' 20-year-old victim said after she left a party, he jumped into her car and raped her. She went to police. He went to Facebook. Specifically, his status update read: 'I got 500 on a girls head who wants that bread? Hit me up anyway possible.'"

bluefoxlucid (723572) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221934)

This is why I am a proponent of everybody studying martial arts. He raped her 'cause he's bigger and stronger. If you are going to go after someone who knows Judo or, god forbid, Silat, you're going to get hurt. You might WIN (if they don't study Pentjak Silat-- sorry but those people kill first, ask questions later), and rape them, but you are going to get hurt. If you intend to take this out too far, expect to have a lot of angry friends show up at your house to talk about the cast (or body); and that falls under "premeditated" when the cops show up.

One way or another, these people will get off the street.

Also important, a lot of emotional damage from rape comes from the girl feeling hopeless and defenseless. If she kicks the shit out of you and still gets raped, the only thing she is going to feel is "When is round two you motherfucker?!" We like to arrest people for assault; but the truth is people inherently know that other people shouldn't have to suffer because you're a dick, and so they punch you in the face. When they don't feel so defenseless, they're less inclined to blame themselves for shit other people do to them.

Re:What a shitbag... (1)

Zironic (1112127) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221980)

Learning Martial Arts is prohibitively time consuming and still doesn't help you if you're surprised or inebriated in any way. You'd only get rid of a fraction of the rape cases at best.(As most rape cases are not assault cases against sober victims)

Re:What a shitbag... (2, Insightful)

There are plenty of small pistols that will fit in a purse or one's cleavage. It's a lot cheaper, less time consuming, and will do a lot more for self defense than learning some over-acted choreography.

More like if you took a Biology major and they started teaching you how to tie your shoelaces.

I kind of agree with the guy. The reason I don't look at "normal" news and entertainment sites is that I'm fed up of hearing about every rape, murder, lying politician, etc.. I know these things are happening, and it's sad, but I don't need to be constantly reminded of them, especially when I can do almost exactly nothing to change the way the world is.

Yes. Yes it is. YOU clicked on the article's comments, YOU posted the comment. Slashdot didn't force you to comment. In fact, most of Slashdot would've preferred if you DIDN'T. Yes, it's YOUR fault YOU posted.

I know it's either your OCD or some primitive instinct like a dog marking its territory, but seriously, you don't NEED to post on EVERY story that shows up on Slashdot's main page. Really, you don't. You're not any less of a nerd for it. You. Don't. Need. To. Comment. Many, many, many times, you're far, far better off for NOT posting a comment. Seriously, you don't need to comment.

I'm going to repeat it again, as it's the only hope it gets through your deeply-rooted myriad of socially incapacitating mental disorders: You do not need to comment.

misleading headline (5, Interesting)

jaymz2k4 (790806) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221662)

The guy sounds a complete douche but I'm not so sure posting a status update could be considered the same thing as "tried to hire a hitman". It sounds more like the usual passive aggressive comments shared between friends without realising that the police will take it completely seriously and charge you with it. The lesson is, as is ever more clear each day, expect your social network trawled for evidence if you're ever in trouble and take heed of privacy settings. I wonder what would have been made of it had his status update been completely locked to friends only?

Re:misleading headline (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35221748)

take heed of privacy settings. I wonder what would have been made of it had his status update been completely locked to friends only?

Hmmm...FB clearly indicates in the ToS that it will not resist a reasonable subpoena; I assume that would have happened. So much for the "privacy" settings - if it's in the interblags, treat it as world-readable.

Re:misleading headline (1)

Zironic (1112127) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221868)

Normally it wouldn't, but the situation tends to change when you have an actual motive to kill someone.

Friends only probably wouldn't help as it has started to become common to subpoena facebook for evidence.

Re:misleading headline (4, Informative)

Jim Hall (2985) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221874)

TFA isn't that long, so I read it. The girl said she saw the posting, and told police that she feared for her life. The best bit is what happened next:

At the preliminary hearing, West Chester Police Det. Stan Billie testified that he went to Adams’ home and that Adams agreed to meet with him at the police station. Less than 10 minutes later, Adams posted a second Facebook message that said he “needed this girl knocked off right now” Billie testified.

So the guy is even more of a douche. Let's see, post vague message on FB for a hit job. When police ask you to come down to the station (not arrest you and take you to the station, but you agree to meet them there) you post a followup that you really need this girl dead.

Yeah, dumb.

Re:misleading headline (1)

mangu (126918) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221974)

Less than 10 minutes later, Adams posted a second Facebook message that said he âoeneeded this girl knocked off right nowâ Billie testified.

Probably just a typo, he meant he "needed this girl knocked up", that's why he tried to rape her.

Re:misleading headline (1)

Blindman (36862) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221978)

I'm not disputing that he is douche, but the posting right after he left the police station is just plain stupid. I assume the original posting came up during the interview, so it should have taken less than half of a second to realize that updating the death threat was a bad idea.

Privacy settings?!?! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35222074)

The lesson is, as is ever more clear each day, expect your social network trawled for evidence if you're ever in trouble and take heed of privacy settings.

Do you really think 'privacy settings' will stop the cops or lawyers in discovery?

Re:misleading headline (2)

Antisyzygy (1495469) | more than 3 years ago | (#35222162)

I suspect he will probably play the "it was a bad joke" defense. Its reasonable enough since a negotiation never took place, and money didn't actually exchange hands. That being the case, I am unaware of the law in that state, but it seems to me the police are making a bigger deal than necessary out of some dumb and douchey kid who obviously deserves time in prison for the rape if he is found not to be innocent. If anything this evidence should only be used as an indication he is not remorseful and the punishment can be adjusted accordingly (once again, if he is found not-innocent).

Sedated2000 (1716470) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221710)

Are people taking his post seriously because he is accused of raping the girl first? For this to have been legit he'd first need to have hitmen as friends on Facebook, and second he'd have to have pursued it. There are millions of people who say stupid things on Facebook that aren't taken in the same context. I have seen many more explicit posts on Facebook and not one was taken seriously by anyone.

Re:Seriously? (1)

b0bby (201198) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221880)

No, more likely because after a cop visited him:

Less than 10 minutes later, Adams posted a second Facebook message that said he “needed this girl knocked off right now”

The first could be a joke, the second sounds like he's serious...

Re:Seriously? (1)

jgagnon (1663075) | more than 3 years ago | (#35221896)

I'm doubting this was the only evidence... but also consider that he basically confessed to rape and "trying hiring a hitman" during the plea process.

Re:Seriously? (0)

Antisyzygy (1495469) | more than 3 years ago | (#35222476)

Come on though, the police are intimidating to a 19 year old kid. A lot of kids would just admit anything because they are scared and bad liars. Police are fucking jerks sometimes, yet they are awarded higher authority than you or I. They should be just as accountable to underhanded tactics they use for busting people (for the sake of busting them, not for justice) as this kid is being held accountable for the "trying to hire a hitman".

Have you looked at Soldier of Fortune magazine add over the past few years? Hell, a lot of hitmen are homeless now, and are doing hit for food, or partially used clothes. It has gotten really bad.

I hired a hitman last year, but he failed to do the job(ran out of gas). I hired another hitman to take him out, but that guy could no longer afford bullets. I ended up paying a homeless man $10 to kill them both, but he ended up buying food for the two hitmen.

I mean, what has the world come to when a hitman will not kill people and homeless people will not do anything for money?

dkleinsc (563838) | more than 3 years ago | (#35222184)

Or alternately, it's exactly what she said happened. Her story is perfectly plausible, and her behavior afterwords totally consistent with being raped, and then freaking out because it appeared as though her rapist just threatened her life.

Although women are (rightly) encouraged to seek medical aid after being raped and get a rape kit, it's not at all uncommon for a woman who's just been raped to want to go home, take a shower, and do her best to forget the trauma of what just happened. And she might have gotten over it and not pressed charges, except that this moron then posted something up making it appear that he wanted her dead, at which point she very correctly went to the police.

She should have gone to an ER to get a rape kit right away. She should have gone to the police the next morning rather than 2 days later. But there's nothing in her story that remotely suggests she's lying. And frankly, that you would immediately assume that she's making this up in order to ruin this guy's life is offensive to anyone who has or is a friend or relative of anyone who has been raped.

If you read the article linked in the linked article, it might change your perspective. Philadelphia Inquirer [philly.com]

Also, you have the timeline wrong. She went to him first. He posted the cash bounty. Then, she went to the police. As for keeping this from her real BF or father, there is no reason to believe that either knew or had reason to suspect that sex (consensual or otherwise) had occurred. Also, based on the June dates, presumably 2010, it is safe to assume that she did not go to the press. The article had no quotations from her or statements attributed to her other than the detective's account of his interview with her.

If you are going to speculate, read the article first.

The lawyer presented the judge a copy of the law that my friend was charged with disobeying. The law stated that it was against drinking while driving. So the police officer obviously had made a mistake, and wrote down the wrong law when charging my friend. He told me later, "I got lucky!"

So I would not be surprised if a good lawyer could weasel this dumb-ass out of any charges on some technicality.

Since he pleaded guilty, it would take a very good lawyer indeed

I don't know. Advertising for murder is a pretty straightforward crime, if it is plausible enough that he was serious.

Dumb cop then. Any competent cop would have added "Minor in possession" to the ticket.

Upon seeing his solicitation, I'd have contacted him and agreed to carry out the contract. Then find the girl, explain everything, and fudge the murder. Promise her half the $500, and bring back a ripped shirt of hers dabbed in pig's blood as proof of the done deed. Tell him nobody will even know she's gone for a couple days, and be gone by the time he shits himself in court.

You know, the story can be quite diferent. (0)

Well, not trying to defend the guy because I don't really know the truth (and let's remind that neither do you). The story can very well be another.

- Girl get's get's drunk and acepts to have sex with the guy.
- Girl wakes up, with hangover next day and decides that after all, she didn't really want to have sex with the guy.
- Girl goes to the police and says the guy raped her.
- Guy get's pissed off because this is unfair and posts a stupid message in FB because he basically thinks she is a bitch.

Then again ... why did this story get in to Slashdot?

Because people think it is the Geek section of FARK?

She went to him first. Then he posted the bounty. Then she went to the police.

You're missing some key plot elements from TFA.
-Girl points out status update to cops.
-Cops knock on his door and he agrees to go down to the station to talk about it.
-Guy immediately updates his status again to say he needs the "girl knocked off right now".
-Guy is arrested and lawyer basically tells him he's an idiot and facing 35-70 years.
-Guy signs plea agreement for rape and solicitation for murder to get the potential sentence reduced to 11-22 years.

At this point, it doesn't matter if the girl originally consented and then changed her mind in the morning. The guy was perfectly serious when he tried to put a hit out on her and an idiot to clarify his intentions after he knew the cops were onto him.

This clearly called for Craigs List not Facebook.

Maybe he just wanted to know if for $500 we would hit it?

Then the charge is just pimping.

Personally, to simplify our overblown judicial and legislative system, I think there should be 3 and only 3 criminal charges, all of which are punishable by death. Rape, Abuse Of A Child (sexual or otherwise; I'm not talking 20 whacks w/ a belt, I'm talking serious, life-altering shit), and Gross Stupidity. And this guy wins on 2 out of 3. How stupid can you possibly be?

Of course, I'm continually amazed by the kind of people that (a) try to hire people (generally amateurs - most people that really have a reason and strong desire to kill someone are also the type of people that handle it themselves anyways) and (b) that try to profit from it (see my comments about amateurs, again). Logistically speaking, as a career choice it's not a very good one. Because if you're doing this for a living, you have to be employed by someone with some serious clout to make a living off it (and not end up in prison). Think about it - planning, carrying out, and cleaning up after a disposal takes at least a 3 days (possibly up to a month or more if the target is particularly well-protected or otherwise complicated). Even cleaning up after a spur-of-the-moment thing takes at least 3-4 hours to do right (if you include disposal of the body, cleaning up any blood, hairs, etc.). Doing this on a regular basis? There's no way it's even economically feasible in a risk vs. reward scenario.

Kids these days, right?

I've got a few friends of friends who like posting pictures of themselves with huge bags of weed, bottles of pills, and on a few occasions, face down over a couple of lines of powder with straws up their noses. The accompanying comments are the real gems though, tagging their dealers, friends, and then the obligatory comment about how fucked up they were.

I want to say that these kids need to wise up and realize that what gets posted on the internet stays on the internet, but after some thought, I wish them the best in their self-incrimination.

What a sick sad world... (1)

... When men were men and horses were horses, if a kid raped a girl SHE would hire a hitman to take him out or her family would do it. My Grandpa, bless his cigar-chomping rattlesnake-eating soul, once said to me: "you know, kid, your generation thinks you've got it hard but it just ain't so. Things have always been screwed up because if there's something Man is good at, is screwing things up. Anyway, when I was your age a young man about eighteen (we didn't call anyone over 14 "kid" back then) took his liberties with a town girl. And by "taking his liberties" I mean he fucked her in the ass without her consent. She comes home visibly upset and tells his father that this piece of shit from who knows where just fucked her in the ass without her consent. Now, we're pretty tolerant folks but if there's something we believe in is that nobody fucks a woman in the ass without her consent. That's just plain rude. And that was exactly what her father thought so he called his two sons and made a couple of phone calls and we met in the town square. We held a little meeting and decided that no, this piece of shit couldn't get away with fucking the girl - any girl - in the ass without her consent. And that included Rose the Thorny Bush, who practically went around with a FREE ENTRANCE sign taped to her ass and a pile of signed consent forms in her purse. But I digress. OK, to cut a long story short we get our hands on the piece of shit and after punching the lights out of him, we drag him to the town square where we decide what to do with him. Good old Ezekiel, who has always been two days short of a Sunday if you take my meaning, proposes that since he fucked the girl in the ass without her consent, we should do the same and fuck him in the ass without his consent too. But we're not rude people you know, and we don't go around fucking people in the ass without their consent even if they have fucked other people in the ass without their consent. It's just a no-no. There are limits to what you can do to even the most vile person. So we decided to torture him to death by dismembering him alive. Which wasn't exactly easy in those times, we didn't have those fancy chrome-vanadium chainsaws you guys use to dismember people. Dismembering people back then was serious business. So we gathered saws, hatchets, knives, whatever and cut him to little pieces, and burned most of him but some of us being sentimental people decided to keep a piece. I kept his dick. Had it stuffed and mounted but I grew sick of it and left it in the attic. Wanna see it?" We went up and he showed me the thing. It was covered in dust and cobwebs but armed with a vacuum cleaner I managed to uncover it and lo and behold, there was the dead terrified face of the miserable rapist who so long ago fucked that poor girl in the ass without her consent. "Grandpa," I said "you told me you took his dick." "Well, he WAS a dickhead, don't ya think?" Yeah, bless ol'Grandpa.

Hope that once in jail, he'll get his ass raped... HARD.

...but in the UK there was the guy arrested for threatening to burn down an airport on Twitter.... ok, he obviously was just expressing his frustration and it's a bit more possible that this FaceBook loser (sorry - 'user') was serious, but it shows how these idle comments on social media get taken seriously by the authorities.
