But, But ... (5, Insightful)

WrongSizeGlass (838941) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553564)

Won't Sony sue him for adding functionality to the PS3 that didn't ship with it? Isn't the rule that they can only remove functionality after their precious little console ships?

Re:But, But ... (3, Informative)

davester666 (731373) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553760)

No, it means Sony will have to charge everybody to enable this new 'feature'...

And then steal it back when it becomes inconvenient to them.

All IP addresses found in this thread will be seized to Sony in a few days, just you wait.

They will threaten the author with lawsuit and confiscate all his work after he caves in, then flip it as a new feature wholly developed and owned by Sony.

Re:having their cake and eat it too (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35554628)

Sony have never added a "feature" that has been (re)implemented by homebrew developers. Sony only remove functionality.

Pikoro (844299) | more than 3 years ago | (#35554986)

Actually, we put flash support on the PSP after Sony stated that they would never add it. http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2006/03/psp-flash-swf-player-sour.html [makezine.com]

Shortly after that, Sony added official flash support.

The PSP also has full-on 3D support for a number of games. You just need those stupid looking red and blue glasses and a modded PSP.

Oh gee, it's this thread again. Seriously, they aren't going to do anything here because nothing he did enables piracy. That's the only thing that really makes sony angry. Everything else seems to be okay.

Re:But, But ... (0)

Oh I see. Making SONY angry is unacceptable, but SONY making us angry, well, that's fine. Get off the pot.

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35556780)

I have nothing to worry about. I boycott Sony so I would never own a PS3.

The Kinect, however, is the first reason I've seen to want something new from Microsoft in a long time. But they always did manage to make better hardware than software.

Wonder how long this is going to be happening (0)

Nice (5, Informative)

SpooForBrains (771537) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553654)

For the curious, the PS3 does not need to be able to run unsigned code.

The methodology is fairly simple. As far as I can tell, the Kinect sensor is connected to a PC running Windows, then software on the PC interprets movements captured by the sensor and translates them into controller movements, which are sent to the PS3 using diyps3controller, which emulates a PS3 controller using Bluetooth.

Pretty bloody clever but the lag must be awful.

Re:Nice (0)

ciderbrew (1860166) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553718)

Having played a demo Kinect in the shop I'd say the lag was awful anyway. Mind you, after 5mins of jumping about the lag will be about right. After 10mins I'll take your Bluetooth version. Why do these people want to get me out of the sofa to jump around? It took years to get this unfit!

Re:Nice (0)

TheRealQuestor (1750940) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553776)

Pretty bloody clever but the lag must be awful.

roger that, the kinect is kind of laggy on my Xbox and its even more laggy on my pc, I'd HATE to see the lag using a pc as a bridge device. yikes.

Re:Nice (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35553906)

So your PC has a shittier processor than an Xbox360? Upgrade for fucks sake, this isn't 2003.

TheRealQuestor (1750940) | more than 3 years ago | (#35554272)

Only if you call a i7 920 that's been running awesome @ 4.2Ghz since day one. pumping through 12 gigs ddr 3 1600 memory. I just wish something would come out that is worthy of upgrading TO.

Re:Nice (1)

Re:Nice (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35556498)

so you believe the processor is the bottleneck in custom bus interfaces?

not necessarily all custom bus interfaces, but it's certainly a possibility in this case given the lack of optimised drivers. I wouldn't say that's the only bottleneck or even the major bottleneck, but it certainly could be.

(oh and yes, to save you replying ill just throw it out there 'i am nothing', there you go).

Re:Nice (1)

Aeternitas827 (1256210) | more than 3 years ago | (#35556664)

You have the option to do what you are doing, and what you are doing is looking like a fairly illiterate fool. You're right, it is very telling; I care about such things as grammar, spelling, and syntax. Things that a so-called 'feeb' would not be capable of. How telling...

By the way, that last bit isn't a complete sentence, hon. Try harder, you're almost there!

Re:Nice (0)

MichaelKristopeit406 (2018812) | more than 3 years ago | (#35556734)

why would a feeb not care about the irrelevant syntax of sentence capitalization which doesn't serve to change the logical interpretation? why would a feeb not support a tool to aide the reading comprehension of the weak minded?

how telling indeed... you're an idiot.

cower in my shadow behind your chosen pseudonym some more, feeb.

you're completely pathetic.

Re:Nice (2)

Nice and all, but:

the software is at a pre-alpha quality state, meaning that some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features

WTF? I thought pre-alpha meant "buggy as hell, try it if you really want to see something cool, but don't count on it working for more than a few minutes." Since when did it mean "some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features"? I thought that stage is beta/pre-release.

Re:Nice (1)

Aeternitas827 (1256210) | more than 3 years ago | (#35556522)

"some libraries need to be improved in order to boost performance and features" is a catch-all that really could describe anything that isn't RC or RTM; pre-alpha, alpha, pre-beta (if that exists), beta...there's probably one library that is working well enough to be complete, making 'all libraries...' inaccurate, and 'most libraries...' something to skip over.

Re:Nice (1)

xhrit (915936) | more than 2 years ago | (#35557644)

well since beta/pre-release has come to mean finished product, they might as well say pre-alpha when they mean beta/pre-release.

DO NOT WANT (-1, Offtopic)

vivin (671928) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553800)

This sucks. Really sucks. I've been a T-Mobile customer since 2002 and I've enjoyed their great customer service. They've rarely screwed me over. I'm not looking forward to dealing with AT&T's douchebaggery. I'm going to jump ship as soon as I can.

Sprint or Verizon? How do they compare to T-Mobile?

Re:DO NOT WANT (1, Funny)

vivin (671928) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553804)

Goddammit. Wrong story.

Re:DO NOT WANT (0)

WrongSizeGlass (838941) | more than 3 years ago | (#35553922)

Goddammit. Wrong story.

Yes, wrong story but right sentiment.

Not to burst your bubble, but in my 12 years of using Verizon they had the best network coverage by far but the worst customer service possible. AT&T is measurably better, but when you're starting at 'oh so shitty' you don't have to do much to be better. I never would have moved to AT&T if Verizon let me have my 'free upgrade' 10 days early (my phone was damaged and they said I'd have to wait the 10 days or pay for a new phone in full).

Re:DO NOT WANT (1)

Kilrah_il (1692978) | more than 3 years ago | (#35556454)

That's why they say the software is pre-Alpha. In the final product you won't have errors like this.

This becomes the 3-year-old (as in children) argument. In whole, it goes like this:

20 PRINT "B: NO IT'S MINE"
30 PRINT "A: NO IT'S MINE"
40 GOTO 20

Am I the only one who doesn't get it? (2)

I just don't understand all the hype around the Kinect. I guess it's cool from a strictly technological point of view, and I understand the novelty of it for casual gaming, but I can't imagine a scenario in which a serious gamer would want to use it. Then again, I hate the Wii and yet it is doing the best of the current consoles.

It's ok, we'll get off your lawn so you can get back to all that 'serious gaming'. Really what is with that elitist cockbag mentality?

Re:Am I the only one who doesn't get it? (1)

Aeternitas827 (1256210) | more than 3 years ago | (#35556576)

Gaming was intended to be an exercise in sitting on your arse fine-tuning your fine motor skills, when conditions outside were too lame to deal with. Unfortunately, that's gotten a little overextended with this generation. The Wii, Move, and Kinect are how the industry responds; when parents should have responded with 'GET THE FUCK OUTSIDE BEFORE I KICK YOUR ASS OUT THE DOOR'.

Immobile gaming is how it should be, even casually, and in moderation. If kids get fat playing Halo, it's their parents' fault.

Sony should have put a little more money into R & D. Maybe then they would have introduced something creative instead of just reimplementing the Wii controller with their 'innovative' glowing ball on the end.

Now for Sony to sue the guy for creating it and Sony suing Slashdot for linking it since we recently learned on slashdot in the past few days that even linking is illegal. and finally ending with a Judge's order to turn over the ip of everyone that clicked the link in the article... fuck sony http://sites.google.com/site/eclement/ps3jailbreak [google.com]

Re:Lawsuits incoming... (1)

Rennt (582550) | more than 2 years ago | (#35557078)

I'd have thought Sony would be quite pleased. Microsoft just spent millions on development, and BAM! - ported to the PS3 at zero cost to Sony. Meanwhile you still can't use Move on an Xbox, and there is probably no community interest in making it happen.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has to be crying into their cornflakes.

Re:Lawsuits incoming... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#35557232)

Microsoft can probably live with it. They make money on every Kinect sold.
Sony however will likely lose almost all Move sales once this works properly.

Anyway, if past events have taught us anything, it's Sony who is acting like a total asshole regarding their consoles, not Microsoft.

"Move" collecting dust (2)

whereiswaldo (459052) | more than 3 years ago | (#35556314)

My excitement over the PS3 Move controller was quickly subdued when I discovered I can't play the sports and gladiator games using online multiplayer, only local multiplayer. Now the controllers are sitting and collecting dust.
Given that complex games work online I can't see why Move games are any different. From an end-user perspective, it's really lame.

Re:"Move" collecting dust (1)

boring.. (1)

SuperDre (982372) | more than 2 years ago | (#35557066)

Wake me up when it actually is running on a PS3.... this is just a Kinect connected to a PC and running emulation software to turn the movements into PS3 sixaxis controller commands.. Nothing really fancy... It's just like using JoyCur for getting joystickcommands to be turned into keyboard commands..

I see a new lawsuit comming (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#35557498)

I guess Sony soon needs to put a "You are not allowed to have fun using this product" to their general terms and conditions... And a number to call to get sued if you accidentally have fun...
