i remember duke from childhood (5, Funny)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35597224)

Ah, memories from childhood. One day my friend told me he had found a kickass game from a BBS and asked if I wanted to go play it with him after school. He described it to me and I was already sold, but but... My mother Giovanna had told me to help my father at our family pizza place after school. Damn it!

School day became to end and I tried to consider my options, but there were none. I had to go help my papa make pizza. Frustraded, almost crying, I walked the streets of Naples back home. Every now and then I watched inside a window on the street and noticed someone playing on computer. I was thinking if that could be it, but I'd never know.

I decided to think for a moment. Like a good oven takes its time and peace to bake and finish a delicious pizza, my padre would wait for me. It was time to go see what the game was about.

And I was amazed. Great looking graphics, funny sounding man that I did not understand and girls with something on their chest that looked like doughnuts with a salami on top of it. It was truly marvelous.

While later serving customers at my fathers pizza place, I couldn't but think that I have to get a computer and this Duke Nukem 3D game. I mean, I loved baking pizza. But there is a time when a boy must choose between leisure and girls. But my father never got me a computer.

Like an overbaked pizza, my dreams were crushed when Duke Nukem Forever never came.

It occurs to me that someone may not even have been in HS yet when the game was announced, graduated from HS, gotten a college degree, and could now be working on DNF.

Yeah, it was somewhere in Leviticus, wasn't it? It had a big two-page spread and everything. That couldn't have been cheap, especially without any printing press.

I'd be willing to bet - not much, mind you, but willing - that they did this not because of any technical glitch, or anything like that, but rather, for the humour and irony in delaying the game yet again, when it's actually finished.

After all, it's Duke Nukem Forever. It can't possibly be released without a delay, right?

Dude, you need to check out the new Windows 95. They finally got the B version out, which is great because it allows these new fangled usb ports to work. And mIRC is great, and Mosaic runs well on my Cyrix.

You'll want to boot to DOS still though for games (and Cthuga!). Or just keep a 6.2 box around running QEMM. Oh, well back to Darklands! /music plays me out: Mr. Self Destruct

I searched and searched on a good reference for the USB device (I can't remember my first very well, maybe a mouse). I saw a bunch of places (coping each other) say Apple Quicktake 100 [lovetoknow.com] connected by USB, but that seems incorrect. It was just regular serial (RS232). Anyways, if any people see this, tell me your first USB device (or if you know some of the first USB cameras). Thanks...

Your timing is a little off. The state-of-the-art in 1997 was:
Windows 95 or NT 4.x
Nintendo64 or PS1 or Sega Saturn

I figure by the time Duke Nukem Forever arrives, it will have graphics no better than an N64 or DS.

Cute, but I can tell you're a young'n because a Pentium (MMX) 233 would never have come with only 4 MB RAM, the Pentium II was the state-of-the-art in 1997, Windows 95 was out in 1997 (duh), and no good games ran on Windows 3.x. But thanks for playing. Now get off my lawn!

I've been waiting for Duke to return ever since the first teaser-trailer.

Duke3D Now (2)

Azarman (1730212) | more than 3 years ago | (#35597314)

Well I am big Duke Fan, to the point that once we heard it was finally coming out a friend and I got Duke3D working over WAN which I will share today. Firstly pick up a copy of Duke 3D Atomic Edition (i like this website http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/duke_nukem_3d_atomic_edition [gog.com] ) I think the game is in open licensing but not 100% sure. Then download Tunngle from http://www.tunngle.net/ [tunngle.net] which is a WAN VPN thingy that allows you to play Local network games over the interweb. Install, Start Tunngle, Full screen Duke select network game and you now have multiplayer Duke3D in 2011 (if the game lags its because your internet connection has a high ping time) Side note I hope they keep capture the babe in the new game, could be fun but something tells me it is going to get patched :/ Luke

Re:Duke3D Now (4, Informative)

VGPowerlord (621254) | more than 3 years ago | (#35597458)

Or you could just use your purchased copy's map files with something like JFDuke3D [jonof.id.au] , which even includes an OpenGL renderer created by the same guy who wrote the Duke3D Build game engine.

As I recall, this port natively supports TCP/IP.

Re:Duke3D Now (1)

Azarman (1730212) | more than 3 years ago | (#35597708)

Thanks for the link,

Your link is someone building a render engine for Duke to Run Natively which is nice but a lot of work. Buying the Game from the website GOG installs it with DOSBOX behind, so you are playing the original game via DoxBox (http://www.dosbox.com/) so no need to update, and DosBox is pretty undemanding on system resources. Secondly Tunngle The VPN client is useful for more than Just Duke3d, Been playing Red Alert (original) and C&CRA2 as well. Basically Tunngle allows network games for older games, thinking about it I wonder if dungeon keeper works.

New games are available on Tuesday in North America so we’re getting the game out as early as possible in this territory. The international markets do not adhere to this release timing, and it just happens that they will be able to release the game a few days before North America. Re:Delayed? (1)

RogueyWon (735973) | more than 3 years ago | (#35598294)

I doubt it's a publicity stunt. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that they were a bit nervous about the feedback they got when they let the gaming press loose on the game last month.

The feedback was by no means universally negative - it was clear that a lot of the journos really, really wanted to like the game (as do I). Besides, previews in this industry (as in most other entertainment industries) tend to focus on the positive. However, there were quite a few coded (and sometimes not so coded) caveats in the reviews. Comments about a lack of graphical polish, about poor physics and level design that left players confused about where to go next. Experience shows that in some cases, criticism like that is a prelude to either a lukewarm reception or, in some cases, a critical pasting. Look at the build up to the release of the AvP game last year for comparisons.

If the kind of niggles highlighted were the kind of thing that could be ironed out with a month or so of extra polish, then I'm not entirely surprised they decided to push the game back a little.

My own biggest concern about the game? It seems to subscribe the that utterly infuriating modern diktat that the player in an fps can never be allowed to carry more than 2 or 3 weapons at a time. This is a stupid, over-rated device that has no place anywhere but at the hardcore end of the military simulator range (eg. Operation Flashpoint). All it achieves in most games is to push players away from the more interesting parts of the arsenal on offer and towards the "rifle and shotgun" safe combo. It ruined Resistance 2 and I'm desperately hoping it doesn't ruin DNF.
