Toshiba Develops 3-D Monocle

Now, Toshiba has laid those concerns to rest with the creation of the world's first 3-D monocle, dubbed the "Spectacle." Now, Pirates can even enjoy 3D. Only if Nintendo can adopt this technology.

Enough is enough (4, Insightful)

Its fun to look for one slightly plausible "april fool" among genuine articles. A whole stream of them just gets boring.

Re:Enough is enough (0)

Anrego (830717) | more than 3 years ago | (#35688522)

Indeed. This falls flat big time.

They really need to intersperse real stories in with the lame April fools ones, and make at least some of the April fools ones plausible.

It would draw in the crowd of people who mostly ignore Slashdot once the April fools stuff starts up and might add a bit more humour to the April fools stories as people wouldn’t immediately assume they were jokes.

People might have to think about whether the articles are plausible. You’d need to have an extra line that _clearly_ makes it an obvious joke in the actual comments page or something, to prevent the inevitable fake story that everyone believes.

Re:Enough is enough (1)

Anrego (830717) | more than 3 years ago | (#35688562)

Id also add that google's "internet through the sewer thing" back in "the day" actually got me. This is the kind of good April fools joke. On the surface it seemed plausible. I actually started going: "hey, that kinda makes sense.. " before I caught on.

The "zomg Microsoft is using the linux kernel in the next release of windows and is decomissioning internet explorer in favour of google chrome" type stories have no humor value to me. Even less so when, as you said, they just come as a constant stream.

Re:Enough is enough (1)

Riceballsan (816702) | more than 3 years ago | (#35688804)

Well I think the main reason is simple, google themselves declared the gmail anouncement date a bad marketing decision. The problem is everyone has taken the jokes too far and now it is a waste of time for anyone to anounce anything on april fools day because nobody will believe it.

Interestingly OpenTTD 1.1.0 was actually released today (www.openttd.org)

In this case the date did help me notice it, as I was scanning open source project sites to see what they were doing for April Fools.

Several non-binocular depth cues (3, Insightful)

tepples (727027) | more than 3 years ago | (#35688560)

This one is slightly plausible. The monocle could selectively change focus of parts of the image, or apply any of several other non-binocular depth cues [wikipedia.org] .

No kidding. The only sporting events I'll watch are live, and even then only when my kids are the ones playing. If that makes Netflix a back door way of getting the benefit of a la carte pricing, I'm all for it.

Agreeded (2)

hAckz0r (989977) | more than 3 years ago | (#35688820)

Two big give-aways in this one for me.

First, two polarizing filters in series will filter out all the light.

.
Second, tungsten carbide is not lightweight! Tungsten carbide is very heavy, dense, and extremely hard material. It is often used for cutting hardened steel. Its not easy /cheap to manufacture because of its hardness and would be far heavy enough to be uncomfortable to wear given that you have to squint to keep it in place. Titanium would have been a much better choice!

Besides that. what would be the point of having 3D for just one eye?

Every year Slashdot does something for April Fool's, and every year people bitch about it. Personally, I like that Slashdot is linking to the various geek april fools jokes out there so I don't have to go hunting for them myself, and I think the Mad Libs in the article summaries are clever too.

April Fool's is the one day of the year this sort of thing happens. If it bothers you that much, just take a day off from the Internet and spend the day chasing kids off your lawn or something.

Surprise: 3D monocles are real (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35690888)

The joke is on you and Toshiba's writers. You can, indeed, have a 3D monocle -- that is, a device that makes a 2D display appear 3D by only affecting one eye.

There were a number of 3D television experiences in the mid-80's that worked with a pair of glasses, where one eye was covered with a semi-transparent dark film of plastic and the other eye was covered in either clear plastic or nothing at all. You might expect that this would lead to both eyes seeing the same thing at the same time, but you'd be wrong... It turns out that dimmer images travel slightly slower to the brain than bright images, so the device effectively introduces a slight time delay between the two eyes. So if you have an image moving horizontally across a 2D display, the eyes will perceive the image at an offset proportional to its horizontal speed, making it appear to be on a plane in front of or behind the background (depending on which eye is dimmed and whether the object is moving left or right).

Thus, if you view a 2D animated image with horizontal parallax scrolling using these glasses, it will appear 3D. This is known as the Pulfrich effect [wikipedia.org] . There are a number of YouTube videos where you can try it out yourself [youtube.com] (use a lens of a pair of sunglasses to cover one eye -- works best in a darkened room).

Because the effect only works with scenes with horizontal motion, you don't see it used very frequently. But, yes, you can have a 3D monocle.

Re:All I immediately thought of (1)

WalksOnDirt (704461) | more than 3 years ago | (#35691320)

I was surprised to see it listed as one of the worst TV series of all time. It took me a while to realize that people were objecting to Jews making fun of Germans, like that was devaluing the holocaust or something. Odd.

Re:All I immediately thought of (1)

plopez (54068) | more than 3 years ago | (#35708012)

Yeah, weird. Werner Klemperer was 1/2 Jewish, the guy who played LeBeua (Robert Clary) was in a concentration camp, John Banner was Jewish, etc.

A large chunk of the cast was Jewish, and agreed that the way the situation was handled was OK. The producers, directors and writers were very careful about, from what I heard. The Germans were shown as real twits.

Though Schultz was the most sympathetic, more "the Kraut who rather be drinking beer and eating bratwurst" type.

The other thought that occurred to me was that the camp seemed to be in Germany. If that was the case then when they went to meet the resistance at the "Hauserhof" it probably would have been the *German* resistance.

What an odd comedy series....

You can get a 3D effect by darkening one eye using the Pulfrich effect [wikipedia.org] . Back in 1993 the BBC had a special 3D week where using 3D glasses with one clear eye and one darkened eye. Shows shot in a specific way would look 3D with the glasses but appear normal to users without the glasses.

They even did a 3D Dr Who Special [thetardisv...reen.co.uk] .
