Facebook and Zynga Team Up To Merge Romance and Social Gaming

Soulskill posted about 3 years ago | from the worst-of-both-worlds dept.

Social Networks 38

TechCrunch has the scoop on a really new project from Zynga and Facebook that aims to bring together two of the most popular segments of the social web: romance and gaming. Quoting: "Dubbed 'Relationships,' Facebook is going to soon a section of the site dedicated to helping users meet potential romantic . To do that, the company has been working with Zynga over the last four months to develop games that 'synthesize romance and foster relationships through social gaming mechanics,' helping users flirt and get to know each other using Farmville-like games to help break the . In the post, Facebook says that it will look at the profiles of your previous boyfriends/girlfriends to determine the you’re attracted to most, and that it will also use advanced photographic analysis to figure out your preferred facial structure and body type. In an attempt to privacy concerns before they begin, Facebook notes that all of this is done automatically, and that at no point are allowed to view these reports on your innermost psyche. How reassuring."

And catz.

Seriously, a "Facebook for pets" teamup between Google and lolcats in which Google pilots online medical data records in the veterinary space and all the sinister iomplications thereof would have been funnier.

Wait... people might actually use that... Google might actually do that.... hey folks forget I said that, PLZ. KTHXBYE.

Hasn't that already been done? (4, Insightful)

"Bringing together romance and gaming."

Like in "Spin the Bottle", and "Doctor"?

Oh, wait - this is new, it's "On the Internet". Quick, patent it!!!!

That idea has already been patented.

And the idea to patent that idea has also been patented.

And Fox News has a copyright on Spinning Bottles and Doctoring things.

I do terribly hope that they're collecting all the data on the changes and will release it later :)

As near as I can tell, the dropdown does not send any data back to the server. It seems completely worthless even by Slashdot standards.

...but i mean isn't this what the folks at Second Life have been doing all along? :P.

Yeah, probably. And Muds and Internet Forums and all the way back to FidoNet Bulletin Boards.

I was traveling in Brugge, Belgium in 1993 and encountered a pair of psychologists in a restaurant, both counseled network addictions. Yep, before there was even the internet people were immersed in BBS systems and such and the news would carry the occasional story of lovers who met over a connection and were getting married.

Re:Ok, ok, April fools, etc... (1)

Ksevio (865461) | about 3 years ago | (#35689198)

But no one uses Second Life, while 10 Billion people use Facebook (might be less). What they really need to do is just automated the process so it automatically sends facebook messages to setup dates when it finds potential matches and then photoshops pictures of the people together to put on their walls

Judging from how well things worked out with all my exgfs, it is completely reasonable to match me up with people who act exactly like them. "We heard you like superficial cheaters, click here to play Farmville with one in your immediate area."

what's with the combobox dropdowns? (0)

bjk002 (757977) | about 3 years ago | (#35689230)

just curious...

Re:what's with the combobox dropdowns? (1)

BJ_Covert_Action (1499847) | about 3 years ago | (#35689388)

It's an option that gets activated for your profile once you generate enough good positive karma. It was introduced with the UI redesign a couple months ago. Word has it that if you continue to meta-moderate and generate more good Karma, Slashdot will send you a Natalie Portman hot grits T-shirt eventually.

Good luck.

"Natalie Portman hot grits T-shirt eventually."

Before, after, or during the pregnancy? It matters...

Re:what's with the combobox dropdowns? (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 3 years ago | (#35689744)

Actually I logged out and it was still giving the drop-downs, and then I logged into an account with neutral karma and the dropdowns were still there. Nobody can actually "rate" them. It's just something to play with and it looks like it does something. I don't think there's actually anything happening behind the scenes.

Error in the Mad Lib code (1)

Remus Shepherd (32833) | about 3 years ago | (#35689300)

This is fun and all, but there's an error in the dropbox code. If you select anything but the first option, it becomes a permanent change to the article. But if you try to select the first option it remains a dropbox -- the selection doesn't take.

I noticed on this story because as a Shepherd, meeting potential romantic sheep is pertinent to my interests. :)

Is it bad that I loaded the main page today specifically to read the April Fool's stories, and didn't realize that this particular headline was a joke? It just sounds exactly like what they would do.

Famous faces (1)

wrencherd (865833) | about 3 years ago | (#35690562)

If you follow the link to "TFA" and zoom in on the mockup of the "Relationships" page, the photos of the potential mates on the right are famous faces.

From the bottom it seems to be Pam Anderson, then Rashida Jones and ???? That David Barker is a real stud.

face book games are not very exciting (1)

cheekugames (1734744) | about 3 years ago | (#35695198)

if you have ever played facebook games you realise by now they are not very interesting, look at the way farmville died down, i guess companies should focus on what they are good at and not try to waste their resources at projects where they are not having the expertise.
