Sony's NGP May Be Delayed By Japan Quake

Soulskill posted more than 3 years ago | from the can-we-blame-the-quake-on-sony's-bad-karma dept.

RedEaredSlider writes "Sony's upcoming portable gaming console, code named NGP, may be latest victim of the ongoing crisis afflicting Japan. Sony America president Jack Tretton told Bloomberg that Sony may stagger the global release of its next portable as the company is hit with disruptions to its production cycle."

Not like I would buy it anyways, sony has been on the blacklist for a number of years for me now

Re:good (0)

Gotta love Slashdot. This and other comments are cheering at the effects of the lethal earthquake and tsunami because they delay a product from a technology company that they don't like.

Re:good (3, Insightful)

Slashdot is largely composed of poorly-socialised children who think technology companies are involved in pitched battles of good vs. evil.

anything that hurts sony.... (2, Funny)

Is good for the consumer

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (-1, Troll)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35724428)

I'm sorry, you need to be more specific - is it the earthquake, the tsunami or the resulting nuclear reactor issues that you are celebrating? The familes of those mortally affected by these options would like to know. Tosser.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (3)

ganjadude (952775) | more than 3 years ago | (#35724602)

umm I am not celebrating any of those anon... I am celebrating a delay in sony shipping products which if history is anything to go by (and last I checked it is) is most likely crippled or bad. What happened in japan is horrible, and to even think that was what I was trying to say says more about you than I

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (0, Interesting)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35724798)

What you said was: "Anything that hurts sony ... is good for the consumer".

This is in the context of a discussion regarding a natural disaster (earthquake, tsunami) and subsequent reactor issues that have, apparently, "hurt" Sony.

Therefore, your original assertion is equivalent to "The earthquake, tsunami and subsequent reactor issues are good for the consumer".

I'm sure it's not what you /mean/, but it's essentially what you're saying. And it's not right to be saying that considering the number of people who have died.

Peace

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35725482)

Oh grow up already. I'm sick of all the "fake outrage". Yeah, you could, if you were so inclined, twist the meaning of his post to this obviously unintended conclusion. If one was simply looking for controversy, yeah, you could read it like that.

But it was clearly intended as an anti-Sony post, not a "hah hah those japanese died in a Tsunami" post. The latter supposed-interpretation says more about you than the post you were slamming.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (0)

bonch (38532) | more than 3 years ago | (#35725286)

"Anything that hurts Sony is good for the consumer." This is saying that even a devastating earthquake and tsunami is great because it hurts Sony.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

Doctor_Jest (688315) | more than 3 years ago | (#35729596)

It wasn't intended as such. A better phrase would be "Sony delaying their release cycle is good for the consumer." It wasn't the reason, but the outcome. Sony's release cycle for the NGP will be hampered by unforeseen events. Those events, while tragic, have a silver lining for the greater world... It's one less Sony blitz of "ooh shiny!" that'll come out this year.

No need to be snippy.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

Gravatron (716477) | more than 3 years ago | (#35726040)

Wait, so it's good that it's delayed because you don't like them as a company? What about us who are looking forward to the NGP? It sounds like a rather interesting handheld that answered many of the complaints we had against the last one. What makes you think this one is crippled, compared to what?

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

bruno.fatia (989391) | more than 3 years ago | (#35726412)

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

Gravatron (716477) | more than 3 years ago | (#35727066)

Which doesn't make much sense to me. I mean, what has they shipped in the past that was crippled when it comes to playstation stuff? He sounds like your average Anti-sony troll is all.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35729078)

The PS3 for example. Initially advertised and had OtherOS support and then said support was eventually removed with a F/W update. Makes the machine crippled in many people's eyes.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

ganjadude (952775) | more than 3 years ago | (#35731968)

exactly, there is the entire sony suing everyone who wants to mess with a PS3, there is the rootkit fiasco, I could go on and on. I really do not get how people could read into my comment the wrong way. Its not like im new here. Of course I feel for the people of japan, I should not even need to point that out.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35730868)

You mean the history where Sony was immensely successful with their first two game consoles and doing well with their third? Or maybe the history where they've also done quite well with their handheld system?

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35724688)

The law of Supply & Demand states that it could in fact be all three if you're not actually looking for Japanese goods.

Just saying.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

brkello (642429) | more than 3 years ago | (#35726322)

I think the nicest thing I can say to you is: you are a douche. Sorry, as much as you hate Sony for all their misdeeds, simply not buying their products is the way to go. No need to read or comment on an article for a company you hate. No need to hope for natural disasters or nuclear meltdowns that damage their ability to produce products and kill their employees. Only because this is Slashdot can you say this. If someone said the same about Nintendo being unable to ship 3DS's, you would be modded to oblivion. And yes, Nintendo has done some downright awful things as well.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (1)

Doctor_Jest (688315) | more than 3 years ago | (#35729624)

Let's take a step back (this isn't 4chan for god's sake) and realize what the parent MEANT was "any delay in Sony's release cycle is good for the consumer." I highly doubt (even on 4chan) someone would be serious about the earthquake being a good thing BECAUSE it hampers Sony's plan for the NGP.

If the poster didn't mean that, and at face value, he's praising the devastation as a win/win for the world... then you're correct. But let's not be like every other forum (hah... sorry, I almost got that out without laughing) and try a civil benefit-of-the-doubt stance before someone's called a Nazi.

Re:anything that hurts sony.... (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35727720)

I hear you, but I am torn. On the one hand, it's difficult to see the good coming from such a tragedy. It's unbelievably terrible; it makes criticism of anything related to Japan perceived as an irredeemable act.
OTOH, as someone who hasn't upgraded his PS3 in order to retain the OtherOS function, I can't play blu rays on the PS3 because "I have to update my encryption key, do that by performing a system update."
Am I angry over SONY's manipulation of my purchase? You'd better believe it. Are they going to behave differently, once the bodies have been buried and this disaster has been cleaned up? I doubt it. If anything, my guess is that they will look for a way to exploit it.

staggered release was always likely (1)

tuffy (10202) | more than 3 years ago | (#35724394)

Even before the quake, Sony emphasized it wasn't likely to get a global launch. In Japan, where portable gaming has taken over, an NGP launch before the end of the year is critical to keep the 3DS from an insurmountable lead. But elsewhere, where the PSP has done less well, it's not quite as important.

Oh no, not the games console! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35724492)

Over twelve thousand dead, over fifteen thousand missing, over one hundred thousand buildings destroyed, people injured and displaced, radiation leaks, and.... Oh, right, a games console might be a bit late. Cry me a fucking river, Sony.

Re:Oh no, not the games console! (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#35724654)

For crying out loud. Where do they state that the delay of the console is somehow worse than the impact of the natural disaster so far? All they are doing (as a business whose customer is the general public should) is telling their potential customers how it is and how their previous indications of a street date may not now be met.

Because they know, and I know, and you know, that come that original release date there will be a bunch of 12-year olds screeching about how "Mr SONY promised I could play my game and now I can't and Mr SONY is so bad". Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I Can Wait (1)

Japan has much bigger fish to fry right now, so I can certainly wait a bit longer for a new portable. My old PSP works just fine for now!

Re:I Can Wait (0)

Indeed, and given PSP is still selling like hot cakes (www.psp2roundup.blogspot.com) in Japan, I'm sure Sony Japan won't mind the extra time. Sony US and EU, where PSP is being out-3DSed, on the other hand need help - another price cut perhaps?

Re:Priorities... (1)

Exactly! Because a company that relies on the release of electronics and gadgets should put their lawyers to work on the lines to increase productivy! /sarcasm

Seriously though. How do you think that chasing after geohotz has any real impact on a delay obviously caused by a natural disaster?

Re:Priorities... (1)

zippthorne (748122) | more than 3 years ago | (#35728680)

Lawyers aren't free, y'know. Their fees can pay for a lot of engineers...

The factory workers make the stuff. The engineers plan the stuff. But the lawyers are just there to do battle with other lawyers. The more there are, the more you need. It's a vicious cycle.

Yes, that makes so much more sense then the Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear disaster causing the delay. Because we know Sony can only afford to launch a product OR sue an individual, not both!

Or, you know, your blind hatred of a company is making you crazy in the head, impossible to say really.

The ipod touch is a better portable game console than the new PSP anyway, or a 3DS, 2DS even. Sony can suck Geohots cock.

Re:Good (1)

Teknikal69 (1769274) | more than 3 years ago | (#35727134)

As someone who owns both the Ipod pretty much sucks at games and even games like infinity blade are pretty shallow. I kind of want the NGP but I'll probably not buy it just because of how Sony treats it's customers.

Re:Good (1)

zippthorne (748122) | more than 3 years ago | (#35728706)

Infinity blade is REALLY shallow (although it would make an ok fighting system for a real rpg...). But it does demonstrate one thing: the thing holding back good games on the iPod isn't the hardware or control scheme.
