Duke Nukem Forever Goes Gold

Unknown Lamer posted more than 3 years ago | from the but-will-it-run-on-the-hurd dept.

Games 277

An anonymous reader writes with enthusiasm "Duke Nukem Forever has finally gone gold!" Looks like it'll be on shelves around June 10th with a demo available for Duke Nukem First Access Club members available June 3rd. Can it really be true?

I'm actually surprised this news bit turned up on Reddit before Slashdot. You guys are slipping!

There has to be some correlation between the guy preaching the end of the world this week and Duke Nukem actually coming out. One of the two was just off by a few days. Is hell going to freeze over? The doomsday guy didn't scare me before (I'm a christian, he's a nut) But NOW I''m starting to worry.

Yeah, I'm a little bit scared. We've got Linus talking about Linux 3.0, too: what if The HURD guys get antsy and announce the release of The HURD 1.0?

That's fine; given the length of most AAA games nowadays, you'd still have plenty of time to finish and resell it back to Gamestop before the PigOverlords divest you of your innards.

Turns out the preacher was right it was all a math error. The entire geek community needs to throw an end of the world party to celibrate the release of Duke Nuke Em Forever. Global Warming is nothing compared to the release of this piece of vaporware. Being a devout non Christian I'm currently sharpening my skates since I hear Hell is a bit chilly and there's no way I'm going to get Raptured up to heaven.

What they've all failed to realize is that they were actually correct: The people who were going to be saved by the rapture were already saved by the rapture. They (and everybody else) are in denial because it wasn't them.

As foretold, this is the first sign that the world will cease to exist in 6 months. The second sign will happen on June 3rd.

I have no intention of buying DNF, but I want to touch a copy of it. Too bad (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 3 years ago | (#36230330)

Too bad it's a Steam exclusive. I don't even know why they bother printing those useless disks then they don't do anything for you.

A game I waited more than a decade for, and I can't, in the end, play it because of the DRM.

Re:Too bad (3, Interesting)

ElectricTurtle (1171201) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230466)

Ditto sentiment here. I violated my 'no Steam ever' policy for Civ V. Never again. Patches are involuntary, and I once was told by the Steam software that I couldn't run my own damn bought and paid for game. Luckily it was just a fluke error and it worked when I tried again a few minutes later, but it puts things into perspective. Any time Valve wants to yank your ability to run something, they can, for virtually any reason, and you're left holding your dick.

There so many of games from indie developers and from non-DRM sources like gog.com that I will, never, ever again buy anything that requires Steam or any similar service that makes you some distributor's bitch serf.

Re:Too bad (5, Interesting)

Eric(b0mb)Dennis (629047) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230670)

This is so true.. although i'm still a 'slave' to the monster out of need.. valve has royally screwed me just like that one time.

I lost my entire account (The entire thing, banned) with well over $300 worth of games. Almost everyone valve-made game. CoD: MW, BF:BC2

How does this happen, you say? You receive a gift from a random friend who you never talked to (The gift was Left4Dead 2, because he wanted someone to play with) and it turns out whoever's credit card he used, issues a chargeback... your account is locked/banned permanently!

No matter what I did or said, I could not get my account back. They wouldn't just remove the offending game. They wouldn't let me pay the ***MEASLY FIVE DOLLARS (on sale) THE GAME COST WHEN THIS HAPPENED*** to get my account back.

They pretty much thought I was part of some kind of credit card fraud ring and banned me outright, when I offered to fax them multiple forms of identification AND the credit card used to purchase *Every single game* on my account...

But no, in the end, it came down to one single $5 gift given to me randomly from some douchebag to take away all my games.

Fuck you Valve.

(I still love you, though.. Portal 2 was awesome.. but this just isn't fair)

Yea, this has been pretty sad. I mean, last time I paid money for a DN game, I had a toddler in my house.

That same toddler is now 3 years from HS graduation, and could now kick my ass sideways in a DN deathmatch, and I'm more interested in the fate of my 401k than I am in blasting pixelated aliens to pixelated fragments.

It's going to have to be one hell of a game to pick up fans who got tired of waiting after almost FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS, or who have never heard of the original in the first place.

I have a solution for you, and it doesn't involve groveling in front of your wife-master! First, wait till your wife-master is asleep, then open up her purse and find your balls. Next, re-attach your balls between your legs (or somewhere else if you're feeling adventurous). Now would be a good time to drink a beer, play the damn game, pat yourself on the back like a man, and try to remember that you're an individual and not a freaking slave to that ring on your finger.

Duke Nuk'em in Name Only. They hired a hack job studio to slap together a game. It might be ok, but it won't be the amazing game Duke Nuk'em was.

Re:Dino (1)

Actually, 3D Realms were actively developing it just before closing doors, and the project was handed over to Gearbox (which isn't a 'hackjob' studio) to finish it up. Given that Gearbox only had it in their hands for 6 months, I'd say the game was already pretty far long before 3DR closed up shop.

Gone gold? (1)

Hatta (162192) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230706)

Doesn't the term "gone gold" refer back to silver, gold, and platinum records? A gold record is one that has sold 1 million copies. How has DNF done this before it's even been released?

Re:Gone gold? (1)

fotbr (855184) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230752)

I was under the impression that it related to the way the first "pressed" CDs were mastered -- the master disk was cut (more accurately, etched) and then plated in gold for some reason or other -- perhaps to make them last longer while they were pressing the production run. Don't think it ever had any relation to the sales metric.

Re:Gone gold? (4, Informative)

h4rr4r (612664) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230758)

If this was a record that would be correct. As this is not a record that is not what it means. In this case it means a gold master was made for the DVD production run.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_master [wikipedia.org]

Had you tried typing into google you would have gotten this information.

Re:Gone gold? (1)

_0xd0ad (1974778) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230760)

Not in this context. From TFA:

Duke Nukem Forever, the long awaited sequel to 1996's Duke Nukem 3D, has finally "gone gold', meaning that the game's main development has been completed and is now being replicated onto disks for its release for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms.

Re:Gone gold? (1)

Ogive17 (691899) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230772)

Definition: When a game is said to have "gone gold," it means that the code has been finalized and is ready to be duplicated for distribution. The term goes back to the days when recordable CDs were manufactured using gold film, leading the source CD to be called the "golden master." Unlike the music industry, it is not a reference to the number of copies sold. It will typically take several weeks for a game to ship to stores and become available to consumers after it has gone gold.

"Gone gold" in this context means that the final game disc has been mastered. Once the master is produced no changes can be made and all that's left to do is mass production. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_master [wikipedia.org]

Re:Gone gold? (1)

pak9rabid (1011935) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230802)

It refers to the "golden" copy...that is, the master copy.

Re:Gone gold? (4, Informative)

Zenaku (821866) | more than 3 years ago | (#36230830)

Short answer: No, the term doesn't refer to that. It means the development company has produced the "golden master" copy of the software. That is, the copy that they will send to their manufacturers to be mass-duplicated, producing units for sale.

Doesn't the term "gone gold" refer back to silver, gold, and platinum records? A gold record is one that has sold 1 million copies. How has DNF done this before it's even been released?

Not when publishing software ... I know we used it internally at my company back in the software-on-a-CD days as we would burn a CD-R (which were all gold in color then) that was the master, then send that off to be have mass-produced normal silver CD-ROMs burned from the "gold master".

I'm pretty sure the tern pre-dates that by quite a few years, though.

No, it's more along the lines of a PC being the "golden host" that all other PCs in a line are imaged from. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_master [wikipedia.org]

No, it refers to the gold master copies sent to the CD pressing factories for manufacture.

Is it true...no (1)

Looks like it'll be on shelves around June 10th... Can it really be true?

No, its not true. The Ars, Amazon and EBGames all list the release date nearly a week later on June 14th.

I loved Duke Nukem 3D. It was crap loads of fun and I miss it! I might just have to either get a machine for Windows so I can run Duke Nukem Forever or figure out how to use wine to my advantage.

It's Windows-only? I've had time to switch OS four times since then (Windows XP, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X).

I'll be back... (0)

I wonder if Duke will have aged like Schwarzenegger and appear as a grey shriveled shadow of his former self.

I.....I have tears in my eyes. This is a troll, right? The game of my childhood did not really just go gold, did it?

We'll see "Commander Keen Infinity" before this. (1)

Seriously though, 3D games (of the 2D variety) are so late 1990s. Smart phones mean that sidescrollers are back. Given me Duke and Keen for Android (with a bird ray gun) and I'll be happy.

Ummm... (1)
