Ask Slashdot: What To Do In SW:TOR For Just 3 Days?

timothy posted more than 2 years ago | from the spread-wild-oats dept.

Star Wars Prequels 211

rodrigoandrade writes "I've been invited to participate in the beta testing program for SW:TOR. However, EA's giving out 3-day passes to most testers. A few people are receiving passes for longer periods. Mine will be from Friday 5am through Monday 12am (CST) (i.e. Sunday evening). Since it's a frakking 10GB download (almost 2GB for video alone) I'll use for only 3 days, I'd like to make the most out of it. If you're an experienced beta tester, please post some tips travel-guide style on what I should do, quests I should take, places to visit, etc. TYIA. May the Force be with you!"

What is SW:TOR?
(Yes, I can google it, but shouldn't it be explained in the summary?)

It's something that EA is giving out 3-day passes to for beta testing. It consists of a 10GB download and contains quests.

Actually, not 10Gb, it's 30+Gb.

For those that don't know what it is, it's the New StarWars MMO comming out on December 20th (if you preorder you get early access, and it's estimated that there may be as many as 1 Million pre orders already). It's based 3000 years before the movies, 300 years after the original SW: Knights of the Old Republic game from Bioware.

And I'm in Full beta (not NDA breaking to say your in). and all I can say to the poster is. Pick a class and play. You'll find it's a joy to play, there is no feeling of "Grinding" like in most/all other MMOs. You'll find that your leveling without even realizing it, as the Story is everything. you'll find yourself pushing yourself forward to hear more of the story, beyond the push to get levels...

Star Wars: The Old Republic. A MMO being made by Bioware.

At the very least they should link the acronym to a wikipedia entry or something.

I'm in the full beta test, not just weekend, and unless your TOS is different, there will be no discussion here. All beta testers can admit is:
1. The fact that the game exists
2. The fact that you are in the beta test

So yeah, umm... just try it out?

Re:No (2)

Sir –

How does a signature relate to an agreement? A signature is evidence of the requisite intention to form, and execution of, a legally enforceable mutual promise, commonly known as a contract [wikipedia.org] .

Clicking a button signifies the requisite intention and execution, and is substitutable for a signature. What matters is the intention, and that there has been execution.

With intention on both sides, and some form of execution of the terms, contracts become legally binding - by click or otherwise. This isn't exactly novel, see the 12 year old case: Rudder v. Microsoft Corp., 1999 CanLII 14923 (ON SC) [canlii.ca] (this case, and in particular the principle of adapting legal certainty to adapt to technological advances was affirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2007).

Please stop spreading the nonsense that a contract is unenforceable because it was executed by way of the click of a button. Judges don't think that, and so you shouldn't.

Of course, there may be stray jurisdictions with different opinions – seek out and retain a lawyer for advice.

Re:No (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#37611346)

Well, fortunately for the submitter, he used his real name for the submission, so there's a reasonable chance he won't actually get the chance to just try it out since he managed to break the TOS before even logging into the game.

Just a guess, but his NDA, if it even exists, is probably way less strict, since one of the purposes of this test is to generate buzz for the release.

Generic beta testers, not in this particular beta, can talk at both of you all they want, though.

If you don't want to dishonor your agreement with "Evil Ass" (which is what EA stands for, I presume), you and the OP have said yours. Now everyone else can share their wisdom about how to get everything out of a beta testing, in general.

Mod the above "insightful".

It's all about having fun; the article author treats those 3 days as a quest seemingly similar to "destroy as much environment as possible within 60 seconds". That's bullshit. You need to have fun in your own way and disregard the tic-tac, else it will mess up your fun factor. What else are you willing to do to get the most out of it? (sleep deprivation?)

I would ask them why only 3 days (1)

elrous0 (869638) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611402)

From the get-go TOR has reeked of a development clusterfuck. After failing to follow through with the massively successful KOTOR series on consoles, they come out with this PC-only MMO, followed by years of development hell (to the point where some were speculating it would be cancelled altogether). Now this supposed WoW-killer is coming out, and BioWare is suddenly pulling back on how many people will even be able to buy it, or beta it (not exactly a ringing endorsement of their confidence in their server load capacity). It doesn't help that part of the pre-order hype was that pre-ordering it would get you a chance to get into the beta (guess they forgot to mention the "for just three days" part at the press conference).

Much as I loved KOTOR and want this game to be good, this whole thing is starting to smell less like a WoW-killer and more like the Star War Galaxies mess all over again.

Never saw that, as part of the preorder you do get "early game access", which is a way for them to do a controlled ramp up of the playerbase so not everyone is hitting the newbie zones all at once.

There is a testing program, and I am participating in the testing program, all I can say to you is, it's fucking Bioware dude, the game will be awesome, chill out.

Re:I would ask them why only 3 days (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#37611530)

You are either completely misinformed or an idiot. At no point did it say that if you pre-ordered you would get into the beta. Not once. Never. Pre-ordering got you into an early-access. To some illiterate folks on the forum, they thought it meant beta access, but what it really means is that people who pre-ordered will be able to log into the live servers early. There is still a lot of speculation on how early. It would seem to me that you're bashing the game because 1.) it isn't the KotoR sequel you wanted. 2.) It's PC only and 3.) because you're not in the beta.

Also, what do you mean they're pulling back how many people will be able to buy it? Are you making that up because pre-orders are limited, or do you honestly believe they're just only going to sell a finite amount and then stop? Your sense of entitlement is sickening, and your stupidity is unnerving.

Re:I would ask them why only 3 days (1)

elrous0 (869638) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611626)

Also, what do you mean they're pulling back how many people will be able to buy it? Are you making that up because pre-orders are limited

Funny, I don't recall Blizzard ever having to do that. Sure sounds like BioWare is scared to me.

But believe what you want.

Re:I would ask them why only 3 days (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#37611724)

Yea, Blizzard didn't do that, and the WoW servers rolled over and died for the first week of launch. The same has happened for pretty much every major MMO release since, and people have gone ballistic. Good games have gotten torn apart before they even got off the ground because of it. And so finally someone says "OK, we'll only sell as many copies as we have capacity for" and then they get ripped for that. You can't have infinite server capacity, and you can't accurately predict how many copies you'll sell unless you put limits on it. This to me says they actually give a fuck about having a good launch, rather than just pumping out as many copies as they can. If they thought the game sucked, they wouldn't have these limits, since they'd want to sell as many copies as possible before reviews hit.

Re:I would ask them why only 3 days (1)

Bieeanda (961632) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611598)

WoW-Killer is the single stupidest term I've seen thrown around in MMO circles since that game launched. The only thing that is going to 'kill' that game is itself-- it is a gigantic statistical anomaly in a realm where a few hundred thousand subscribers is still considered acceptable, and two or three million is healthy to excellent. There is no way that SWTOR could have pulled ten million subscribers or drawn off five or six from WoW (many MMO players will subscribe to multiple games, so it's not a zero-sum calculation) even under ideal circumstances.

Re:I would ask them why only 3 days (2)

muffen (321442) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611636)

Preordering was not going to give you a better chance of getting into beta, it was going to give you early access to the game, and it will still give just that.

Not opening up for everyone on the same day at the same time might not be the dumbest of ideas, one can assume that servers will get hit pretty hard at start, don't see why this is a problem. It's fairly clear that the first weeks to month of an MMO decides its popularity, very few games have survived or come back from an initial disaster.

Pulling back on how many people can beta it? Seems like everyone is getting beta access these days, should they maybe just open up free playing for everyone until release?

I'm looking forward to the game anyway, and if it becomes a "star wars galaxies mess" I will happily play it, because I think that vanilla SWG is one of best MMO's ever created.

Re:I would ask them why only 3 days (1)

bigstrat2003 (1058574) | more than 2 years ago | (#37612056)

There is an ongoing beta, and there are testing weekends. So, in answer to your "why only 3 days?" question, the answer is that it's not only 3 days.

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#37611408)

10GB Download? That's optimistic, it's closer to 30GB. Unless they're releasing a limited build to weekend testers, which could make sense, but for me it's over 25GB. Or perhaps the download is compressed and I didn't notice

I only just got into the beta myself, so I can't give much of a guide. I got into full testing, but have somewhat limited time to play, so I'd be interested to hear some points of interest myself.

Apparently some people have got to the maximum level in a week, could be interesting to see how far you can get in 3 days, but if it were me I'd do some exploring and try out all the different classes. You can unlock advanced classes (two choices for each base class) at level 10, and it's pretty quick to get through the low levels. Try and be a useful tester and submit bug reports too! There's more chance of being selected to test again if you do that, rather than just playing for fun.

netskink (1169915) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611582)

Are you on a roleplaying server? If so run around town in your underwear and beg for money in trade chat, act like a kid and whine about your older/brother or parents, when in party talk shit about your team mates gear, while doing anything which requires cooperation make sure you do not participate. In general, spend more time chatting and less time playing. If you know a fart joke make sure everyone else knows it and 10 variants. Are you on a pvp server? If so level as fast as possible and then when you are level 10+ go to the opposing starter area and grief the newbies. Are you on a normal server? Go to town and whine about how good players are on a pvp role playing server. Roll a tank, wear dps gear and rag on your healers.

Play the game (1)

ripdajacker (1167101) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611622)

Just play the game.

Choose a class you find appealing, try to level it, complete quests etc.

I am not a beta tester, but have tested betas before, and you're supposed to just play the game.

skip it? (4, Insightful)

If you're an experienced beta tester, please post some tips travel-guide style on what I should do, quests I should take, places to visit, etc. TYIA.

Places to visit: Take the kids to the park and have a picnic, leaves are beginning to change and most of the mosquitos are dead where I live. Take (your) spouse to romantic dinner. Find a museum and look at artifacts for awhile. "Interpretive centers" mostly suck. Stay away from tourist traps in general.

Good quests, easily accomplished in 3 days: learning everything you need to pass the entry level ham radio license in your country. Another good quest is setting up IPv6 and completing the entire hurricane electric "sage" testing program. Set up a simple, crude mythtv system for the pure fun of it. Set up an asterisk voice pbx and fool around with all the features.

Travel guide style? Rick Steves to the rescue.

Oh you meant a SW:TOR beta tester, not just a guy who tests software in general. Oh you meant inside SW:TOR not just a long weekend. I still say skip it, the MMORPG bubble is over and poppin' and after SW:TOR is just a memory (probably pretty soon) you'll look back and wish you did something useful that weekend. What could you go with 10 gigs of downloads that would be more fun? Well, probably almost anything else. Even 10 gigs of spam emails would be fun to data-mine or graph or analyze.

Just because you don't like MMORPGs doesn't mean nobody else does. Rather presumptuous of you.

Three Days? (1)

Ardx (954221) | more than 2 years ago | (#37611632)

Since you asked opinions of what to do for 3 days, I would spend it personally just figuring out the direction of EA's headquarters from your location in the world and occasionally giving them a middle-fingered salute like they've done to nearly every quality game company they've 'aquired' over the years.

Dear slashdot, How do I play games? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#37611662)

This post reads like "How do I play games?"

Seriously?

Just play the damn game like you normally would. 3 days is a lot if you plan on sitting through 8 hours.

You can accomplish a lot in just 4 hours of play in many RPGs and MMOs.

Advice: If you trade the trolls your sword- you can always get it back by saying "Kentilla" - no force required.

What might you do that's not within the "norms?" can you run through walls - find a way to get an unfair advantage through quirks in the programming? I'd look for things that can ruin the experience if not fixed. That's what adds value to a beta test - finding the bugs that no one thought about.

Suggestion. (2)

Skip it (1)

The purpose of beta testing SHOULD be to find bugs. However, since EA apparently think THEY'RE the ones doing YOU a favor by ALLOWING you to FIND BUGS for them, give them the finger.

The fun part about an MMO (for those inclined to play MMO's) is developing your character, which is a complete waste of time when your virtual character has only 3 days to live.

Thermal Detonators. (3, Funny)

Get as many of them as you can if they exist and run around to people setting them off. Be sure to type "Ssssssssssssssss...." in chat before it goes off and make sure you are wearing as much green as possible.

What the hell

As an experienced QA tester... (2, Informative)

Anonymous Coward | more than 2 years ago | (#37611944)

All the showstoppers have been found already. Since we're in beta (I'm in too), directed tests are out, unless you really want to feel like one of the minimum-wage guys they force to do the same thing over and over again. If you're feeling playful, you could try to break collision detection and get out-of-bounds, try to cheat, what-have-you.

Developers love nothing more than for you to test edge cases. If you find something rare or unusual the typical response (even internal) is "designed that way" or "working as intended." :V

Focus on the beginning and end of actions and quests. The middle is usually tested to hell. Achievements are usually rife with bugs, so pay special attention to ones that count quests and kills, and make sure they're tracking yours.

They're also worrying quite strongly about polish (and rightly so). If you see something that bothers you, say something! (And try to make it eloquent and to the point about why it bothers you.) Awkward animations, equipment placement on your character model (I can't tell you how many bugs I've filed over weapons and shit that clips through a model's hand in weird ways), missed, early or late sound cues, missing visual effects (just about everything you do should have one)... See what happens if you get a bunch of people together in one place and spam emotes. Used to crash WoW servers that way. In fact, one of the best things to do in beta is get together in a group and do the random shit you have planned. Testing is usually done individually or in small groups, which is why the beta is going to be big: they want stress testing like you wouldn't believe. So feel free to spam.

Above all, document what the hell you're doing! Be detailed to the point of insanity if you feel like someone won't be able to exactly mirror your actions leading up to an issue.

I'd like feedback on "R a G e"... apk (0)

Anyone tried it? Just curious - HUGE IdSoftware "fan" for ages here (e.g. -> Doom I/II/III, Quake I/II/III/IV, All Wofensteins, etc.-et al)...

* It just released a day ago is why I ask... comparisons to Doom III &/or Quake IV gameplay & graphics are especially asked for IF you've tried it already. TIA!

APK

P.S.=> I hear they made some improvements in display (also heard tell that Mr. John Carmack now favors DirectX over OpenGL too over time this past year or two, too), using "MegaTextures" from one review I read, but funniest part of that, is there was an "ULTRA QUALITY" option you could manually "tweak-in" by editing config files in Doom III &/or Quake IV that allowed using megatextures already/oddly, in Config.cfg (seta r_skipMegaTexture "0") OR AutoExec.cfg (optional, set r_skipMegaTexture "0"), you could set for that, of -> set/seta r_skipMegaTextures ...
