Mario's Raccoon Suit Enrages PETA

samzenpus posted more than 2 years ago | from the thin-skins dept.

Nintendo 491

redletterdave writes "PETA believes Nintendo's iconic plumber Mario takes a 'pro fur' stance" because he 'wears the skin of a raccoon dog to give him special powers' in the new handheld game released Nov. 13. PETA illustrated its disgust with Nintendo in an online campaign called 'Mario Kills Tanooki.' The page includes a side-scrolling Super Mario-style game called 'Super Tanooki Skin 2D,' where you play an angry, skinless tanuki that must chase a bloody raccoon-pelt-wearing-Mario across a 16-bit world and try to reclaim its fur."

More Specifically Aimed at Chinese Fur Farms (5, Informative)

eldavojohn (898314) | more than 2 years ago | (#38066090)

As I noted in my submission yesterday [slashdot.org] , this stems from their anger at Chinese fur farms that often have tanuki [peta.org] . At first it seems like this directed at Mario and Nintendo however I think they're merely using the popularity of Mario to get this message out about the cruelty of Chinese fur farms.

It's actual fur in the same sense as Mario is an actual Italian from the Apennine peninsula

Most likely the the harm in the game is negligible compared to the harm of rampant anthropomorphisation - Tanuki is an animal which will bite, when cornered, not some happy, smiling little dude willing to share his skin with a plumber.

NeutronCowboy (896098) | more than 2 years ago | (#38066260)

I really wish that PETA would change its top leadership. For some reason, they think that any publicity is good publicity. It isn't when the name of your organization has "Ethics" in it. I expect an organization that talks about the ethics of animal treatment to also have high ethical standards when it comes to debating the ethics of animal treatment. If they want to talk about Chinese fur farms, fine, then please talk about Chinese fur farms. Don't bring a videogame into the discussion where the main character dons a fucking costume of the animal in question.

It's stunts like these that turn me off of organizations in which I should theoretically have a great interest. Greenpeace, the same goes for you. I wish I would donate to more than three non-profits, but publicity stunts like these make it really hard to do so.

Re:More Specifically Aimed at Chinese Fur Farms (5, Informative)

Riceballsan (816702) | more than 2 years ago | (#38066464)

PETA is corrupt throughout the core of it. More then just the stupid stunts for publicity, they also greatly harm far more then they help in protests. Peta "Rescues" dogs and cats. In 2009 of the animals "rescued" by peta 2,301 were euthanized and a total of 8 were adopted out.

From TFA: "By wearing tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur. "

I remember playing Mario games when I was younger, and I did not get any hints or ideas that wearing fur was OK. This is completely ridiculous. With this logic, I should get the idea that eating red mushrooms will turn me into a giant. Or eating a flower will give me the ability to shoot bouncing fireballs at people (I wish!). Or that I should pull out turnips from the ground and throw them at people.

Remember, PETA is one of the most prolific animal killers in the country, hires out their animal-killing expertise to pounds across the country, and even kills animals obtained under the pretense that they'll be adopted out.

PETA, yeah, as long as wanton killing is considered ethical.

PETA is a media whore with the mantra "Do whatever it takes to garner media attention," to promote their belief that animals are equal to humans in every regard. Honestly I think they may be on to something here. Think of all the possibilities if we could tax animals and collect votes.

PETA is 23 years late (2)

Mario has been donning the skin of the tanooki since Super Mario 3 (1988) [mariowiki.com] . In this game he also donned the skin of a, ghasp, frog! [mariowiki.com] . The horror!

So when a bunch of Nintendo fanboys make their own non-commercial game for fun, they get sent all kinds of angry lawyer letters and told to stop.
So what makes PETA immune? I'm being honest here, I would like to know how the law works out this way. It seems to me if fair use doesn't cover non-commercial use by fans, then big organizations like PETA surely shouldn't be covered; and if PETA is covered, then surely the small grassroots fan projects are too?

Peta are fuckwits. (4, Informative)

Peta gives a bad name to actual animal welfare activists, you know the ones, the ones that actually find homes for abandoned animals instead of killing them.

Don't give an animal to a PETA "shelter" unless you want it dead.

Ha,this is making my day. So PETA is bitching about a silly game that has a guy wearing a costume and then they create a game where the guy dies too...This is just silliness.

Ed Gein power up (1)

They need to do a power up where he wears a human skin. Maybe that would get PETA off their backs since they never seem interested in people.

mario's been wearing that suit for something like 15 years. Does it really take PETA that long to catch on?

So the message is that something fun and lighthearted can be made from the skinning of live animals?
