Weird Fossils Show Ancient Organism Reproducing

timothy posted more than 2 years ago | from the privacy-of-their-own-bedrock dept.

China 32

ananyo writes "Strange fossils from Doushantuo in China, have turned out to be 570-million-year-old snapshots of an organism caught in the act of reproducing. Researchers have used three-dimensional X-ray scanning techniques to see that the fossils contain nuclei-like structures — and one even has the dumb-bell shape of a modern nucleus about to replicate. The fossils have divided palaeontologists for over a decade. It now seems likely they are fossils of creatures similar to modern single-celled microorganisms called mesomycetozoeans that are neither animals nor bacteria."

Good one, Slashdot. This is voted funny, yet there's nothing to suggest an actual joke beyond a mis-understanding by the poster. It's almost as if he came on here to post a joke about child porn and latched onto the first thing that appeared to have an age associated with it. Seriously, guys, it's probably time to grow the fuck up.

What - direct intra-muscular injection of Valium into the perineum (underside of your ball bag, in plain English) doesn't work for you? Well, that make you pretty unusual - it works for most people.

Then again, the placebo treatment (approaching the engorged member with a big syringe filled with saline) has a pretty good success rate too.

Those organisms existed, thus there must be their porn somewhere on the Internet.

And now there is.

ron paul orgasms? yes, roman_mir has lots and lots of those. ron paul porn? one would hope not.

for that matter, roman_mir and other ron paul cultists see ron paul as a deity, not a man or organism. they may well not have any pictures of him at all, as that may be sacrilege in their faith to have photos of the deity.

Fascinating ... (1)

RockDoctor (15477) | more than 2 years ago | (#38514018)

... is a good word for these phosphorite fossils.

I've been watching the reports for something like 8 years now. It did seem a bit peculiar that such a high proportion of the organisms would be caught dividing in a rock type that seemed to be the product of more-or-less continuous deposition. But then again, if they're Thiomargarita-like nektonic protozoa in mid-division, mid-water ... well that's pretty weird too.

But a fascinating report, again, from these significant fossils. The very fact that they repeatedly fail to fit into our understanding of life ... just goes to show us that we don't (yet) really understand our world.

Slashdot's NSFW, Rule-34, boner and kiddie-p0rn jokes ... what a lack of surprise.

Anyone read that as "Ancient Orgasm Reproducing" (1)

cylcyl (144755) | more than 2 years ago | (#38515394)

I admit that my mind is in the gutter today, but anyone else read it like that?

Anyone?
